yesterday

I know I mentioned yesterday that I wish we could figure out how to slow her a.m. drops. I didnt mean to not drop at all!!!! I know most cats dont drop at this point, but she does - in the a.m. This is very unusual! Either there is still a lot of kibble lingering around or I fur shotted it? :?

Latte HAS eaten A LOT of kibble in the past 12hrs!!!!!!! It's almost as if whatever was gettin' her down has maybe started to clear and the pred is doing its thing again? Dont like these numbers so high, but I will take them any day, if she is eating. It was such a relief to go to bed last night and not worry.

A few things I added to my condo late last night -
No more potassium citrate for Latte - labs came back pretty much static (low pH and bicarb). So, she still has the Metabolic Acidosis going on. Since the medicine is not making a difference we will recheck in a few weeks. If its getting worse and/or she is more symptomatic then reconsider starting again. She was VERY VERY happy about this! I will see if I can get them to email lab numbers today. Im curious what her BG was at the time of the draw.

Also - her weight was written wrong on the last set of labs. She has lost a few a few ounces, but not over a lb!

Latte gets the week off, since I picked up an assignment for the week. Her ears REALLY need the break.

Enjoy your tuesday!

Re: 1/26 Latte AMPS-255, +1.5-258

This all sounds like good news -- Latte is eating, she's not lost as much weight as you thought, you don't have to give her the dreaded potassium... it's all good.

This may a bit dumb, but I wonder if there are any foods that are higher in potassium than others. In humans, often eatings foods higher in potassium is a first step prior to a medication. I wouldn't suggest bananas or cantaloupe for Latte, but maybe there's some kitty equivalent.

Enjoy your break Latte!! Hope you have a good day Carolyn!
Good luck on the assignment! :thumbup
I agree with Sienne about the food....maybe there are some tht are higher in potassium...it's worth a look
and a try....

Re: 1/26 Latte AMPS-255, +1.5-258

Well, Latte, it looks like luck is on your side! Less testing, and no crappy potassium. Gotta love that!
It's also good to hear that you eating better, so let's hope for continued improvement and good test results.

And Shadoe say hi

Re: 1/26 Latte AMPS-255, +1.5-258

Good report for Latte. Happy you have an "assignment", too, things looking up in that area I hope.

carolyn, if you have time, would you look in on the main yahoo crf list? possible metacam-induced ARF :( msg #228527.

I dont even know what to say about her BG's. She appears to have not moved from her throne all day. She has been up a little since Ive been home, played with her feather some, demanded snuggle time under the covers twice and ate both a little wet and kibble (not much of either, though). She is back to sleeping for the rest of the evening. I might test her before bed, but otherwise Im just going to give her a break. I dont care to see pinks tonight.

I got her labwork back and Im just as perplexed with that, as I am with her BG numbers. Im also somewhat confused as to why the message left last night was that things were pretty static. From 2 weeks ago her creatinine is up from 2.4 to 2.7. For those unfamiliar with kidney disease, these are not terrible and far from the highest she has seen. But it is a rising trend...and the highest she has seen in 2yrs since we got things under control with the Acute failure. It was VERY disappointing to see and made me shed a few tears, knowing we are weeks out from our 3yr anniversary. Its funny when you see some other cats values for some lab work, its easy to say its okay. But when its YOUR cat...makes it a little harder, even with slight changes.

  • *Bun is up a little, but that could be a zillion things...not too noteworthy.
    *Calcium is still high
*Phosphorus went up A LOT....from 3.6 to 5.1. She does waver in that area, but we are nearing the need for a phos. binder. High phosp will make a kitty very nauseated.
*Sodium up a tad, but still normal.
*Potassium down a bit, but still normal. Im good with her potassium because it was getting near the high end, and she often has high potassium for some reason anyway. Ive heard that Metaboic Acidosis CAN disguise potassium and make it seem higher than it actually is.
*Bicarb on renal panel went up (good!), bicarb on blood gas test went up, just hovering at the bottom of normal. To me this makes me think the potassium citrate was maybe doing something. I dont really know how the zillion other values play into the overall assessment though.
*Magnesium is still very low 2.1 (3.3-7.8)....Im not sure why this was not addressed and why I forgot to ask about it. Apparently that can cause leg weakness...which latte has had for a while now.
*pH was 7.216, now 7.267. Ideal, I think is 7.343

I really wish I could understand the blood/gas test better. I think I would need to go to college for 10yrs just to figure out half of it.

Sienne- The acidosis is related to low pH and acidity in the blood. The potassium was used because electrolytes (potassium, calcium, sodium) help bind the acid and allow it to get excreted in the urine...I think  Its all very confusing to me! The other tx is baking soda, but he thought that would go over worse for her (compliance-wise). Her potassium is actually okay...middle of the road to high end of normal. I wish I could explain the acidosis better. Its yet another thing that is wildly confusing to me...so trying to explain it much further than I did may turn into a train wreck! I may have already done that.

WCF- Havent been to that list for a while (usually go to helen's). It looks like Deb did a good job covering things....her and I went through the metacam disaster at the same time. I will keep an eye out and see if the original poster comes back again before I send something off. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention.

Well, my back is killing me tonight, so I may just lay down and rest the remainder of the evening. Sorry for not stopping by to say hello to people much. Tomorrow!!!!

Forgot...BG on tests yesterday were 167 and 174 (dont know why they took it twice).
When I left it was 128, when I got home I believe she was 150 -something.

glad they got to see a decent bg number!

+5.5- 181
Considering her pmps and the fact that she nearly finished scarfing down an entire can of fancy feast in the last 20 minutes, Im guessing she went well into the pink and just took a BIG nose dive in the last hour.

Tomorrow a.m.- Bounce or ridiculously low ps? Which late nighters want to bet one way or another??

Night all!
