i'm a little worried that she might have a UTI or something, as she has been making several trips to the litter box since yesterday. she urinates, each time, but tiny amounts. I am home today, not feeling well. but i just made a vet appointment for this afternoon.

Re: 1/25 Sasha AMPS - 95 - Vet Update and Question (long)

we just got back. Sasha was one stressed kitty. Very very nervous. Poor baby. She gets soooo nervous, i never want to take her. We had a battle before hand, (had to rip her out from under the bed) than by the time she gets there, she has soiled herself, and is beathing with her mouth open and her tongue hanging out. It is sooo sad.

Anyway, She had a check up and blood work done and fructosomine test. The blood results should be back in a few days. The prob she went in for was going to the litterbox more than usual and the output was very low, so the vet suspected a bladder infection. He could not get a urine sample as her bladder (along with everything else, if you know what i mean) was empty. She kept going right there and he had to keep cleaning her. He prescribed Baytril, 2 tablets once a day. Of course I expressed my 2 concerns about tarting an antibiotic with no tests, urine or sensitivity. he said he did not want to keep her there for 6-8 hours waiting for her bladder to fill up and that based on her symptoms, it was very clear to him she had a uti/bladder infection.

(a week or two ago i noticed it was very red and irritated and messy around her anus. He checked that today and her anals glands were not full, but it was very dirty back there. she is overweight (17.10 lbs) and can't clean herself, so that's another reason he thinks she prob got it.)

so, i said i wasn't sure about Baytril, that she had never taken it before and i've heard some scary side effects.
he said he's been using it for 15 years and hasn't had a prob. i told him last year she was on clavomox and did ok and he said it would be up to me, but he said clavomox would be his 2nd choice, as it isn't as strong, or work as well as baytril and he said if it was his cat, he'd give it baytril.

So i left with a bottle of Baytril and am suppose to give her two tonight. (i will have to crush them in food/tuna water cuz no way will she let me pill her)

Anyone have any experience with these AB's? I could always go back and request the clavomox if anyone with experience thought it would be better considering she's taken clav in the past, but never Baytril.

Thanks for your input!!

Re: 1/25 Sasha AMPS - 95 - Vet Update and Question (long)BAYTRIL

Hi,

kudos to you for taking Sasha to the vets.

Can't advise on the Baytril, but you could always cross post in health to catch other eyes (AB's are AB's irrespective of the insulin)

Have you looked at Dr Lisa's site in respect of getting a kitty's weight down? Catinfo.org

Hope your bundle of fluff is ok.

wow, i expected her to be much higher from all the stress of the day!

thanks kate, i posted on health as well.

I tried giving her two Baytrils tonite mixed in tuna water (that has worked for me in the past.)
Not this time. she sniffed it a few times and would not eat it at all. i threw it out. it was right after her shot so i gave her her regular food which she scarfed up happily. in retrospect, i should have put it in there. but she usually doesn't finish the whole plate. i'm not sure what to do about this pill problem

Sasha's Mom:

Have you tried the pill pockets, or any treat you could possibly hide the pill in? This works great for my sister and her DH - they have to pill two cats every day with their high blood pressure medication.

Moonie has had Clavamox for UTI and for all her dentals--She also gets it when she has a feline acne flare up
To me it is the best AB for us--True, you need to squirt it into Sasha's mouth, it tastes like banana(for a cat??) Yes, but it works and does always clear things up--You do need to feed a bit before giving any AB's just like people, with food!!
I think it's easy, fast, and safe..

Roni, how do you squirt it? i don't think sasha would go for that

i have tried pill pockets in the past, but she wouldn't eat them. the tuna always worked before.
tomorrow, i may try creme cheese or laughing cow cheese, but these pills are big and there is two of them, so i don't know
i could try breaking them in half and putting them in the cheese and see if she eats it.
i may have to go back to the clavamox by default. (they are much smaller)

i hate giving AB's. so stressfull!

Right after I test her she has her head turned so I can see the side of her mouth, and gently ease the dropper into her cheek..then just quickly squirt it in..They may not like it, but it gets in there- If you get the dropper into either cheek It just fine then you did it!! :thumbup
Just be quick!

Hi Barb..

I'm sorry to hear that Sasha has a UTI..
Yes... I am always concerned when they don't do a C & S test and then prescribe an antibiotic.
I have always been a little concerned with Baytril too. It certainly has a bad rap! However, I have had to use it with Pepper b/c he can't take Clavamox.

Have you tried cutting the pill in half..and then wrapping it in cream cheese. I did find that laughing cow cheese did work the best for Pepper too.. drizzled in a little tuna juice. Oh what we do to get them take their meds..

Feel better Sasha!

Glad that you caught it early ((Barb))..

tonight's shot was small to begin with, then there was a big drop left over, so i figured she'd be on her way up.

thanks all for the suggestions. i was not successful tonight, but will either try the cheese or try crushing them into some low carb canned friskies. she might eat that since its like junk food for her

thanks!
ni ni :)
