Hi everybody,

Sid is doing very well. He is still in the hospital but he is markedly improved. They are keeping him until they can get his insulin dose stable.

He has been eating and drinking on his own and not needed to be fed through his feeding tube at all. They said he is purring and talking to them a lot. I drove up there 3 evenings this week to visit him and by the 3rd one, I could tell he was fiesty and very ready to come home. Last night was way too snowy to drive up. I could barely drive through town!

I thought he might get to come home today but I heard from the doctor this morning. They are going to keep him today but not charge me (thankfully!!) because they began giving him PZI but did not realize until this morning that they were using the wrong syringes (oops). I have complete confidence in them regarding Sid, but everyone does make mistakes. They have to keep him at least one more day to check his levels. The specialist felt that lantus or levemir was too potent for Sid but the NPH was not long lasting enough so that is why he prescribed Prozinc.

We should be getting his biopsy results monday or tuesday. I am very anxious about those.

I know you said it was ok for me to still post in this forum - is it still ok or should I post in both forums or just one? Let me know :smile:

IMHO I would love to see you continue to post here.

I am so glad Sid is doing so much better! IMHO again I would leave the feeding tube in for a while, remember Tawny relapsed twice and it was only after the 3rd time that they finally agreed to put the tube in and that tube saved her life, b/c even when she was doing well at the hospital she would come home and go off her food, the 3rd time not until about a week after discharge. If I hadn't had that tube I could not have gotten nourishment into her.

Drive careful bringing Sid home, we all want you both safe & healthy!
 
Oh yes, the feeding tube is staying in. At the very least he will get his meds through it. I know exactly what happened to Tawny would happen to Sid. He would come home and start not eating or eating less, and he is very hard to syringe feed. I have tried... I have syringe fed other cats very successfully. In fact my foster cat Whisper is CRF and I've been syringe feeding her 2-3 times/day. I go very slow and she just eats up almost every drop. Sid spits everything out and gets all squirmy. The feeding tube will be so helpful. I'll just have to put water through if he doesn't require food.

Tawny is our inspiration. I tell everyone about her.

I am so glad that Sid is doing better, and eating on his own! - this is good news. Good luck with everything. I hope your boy gets to come home soon.
 
just wanted to say how great it is to hear a good report on Sid today! i'm sure you're both ready for him to come home.

my vet screwed up on the syringe size as well - i figure punkin's acro saved him on that one. the vet switched him from prozinc to lantus but never had us change syringes from the u-40's to u-100's. that meant that he was getting 2.5x as much insulin. we eventually switched vets but not just over that. as you said, everyone makes mistakes.

hopefully your vet will figure all that out and let you know what dose to continue on.
 
My Sid (civvie) is pulling for your Sid. Definitely keep posting here so we know how you both are doing.

lydia, perhaps it would be a good idea to put in your signature block that Sid is using prozinc, just for clarity for anyone looking. sometimes people/newbies lurk and don't post, and you wouldn't want anyone to copy what you're doing thinking that you're using lantus, for example.

We are so happy that Sid is doing well and will be home this weekend. Please continue to post here, Lydia. We are your family. If you have questions specific to Prozinc, you could post in that forum, too. But we would really like to see you and Sid here. Here's the manufacturer's faq for Prozinc. The syringes are U-40 and you're supposed to roll the vial gently. Have a good weekend. I know how happy you will be to have your boy home.

Julie, good idea to change my sig. Thank you for suggesting it - I forgot about doing that. You are very right. I wouldn't want anyone to be mislead.
 
Lydia, the good news about Sid just made my day. I'm so very happy he's feeling better and will be coming home soon. Please stay here with us and continue to post here. :YMHUG:

I'm so glad to hear that Sid is doing better.

I would love to keep hearing about how Sid is doing. My only concern is that if you need help with dosing, I don't know how many people here have expertise with ProZinc. The dosing is very different -- different increments, based on pre-shot, etc. It may be that with specific dose questions, you'll get more expertise on that forum.

I do find it surprising that the vet said Lantus is too potent. It isn't known for it's ability to yank numbers down. That's more an NPH or even ProZinc thing than it is Lantus. I could be ECID or the vet is more familiar with ProZinc.
 
I'm not sure either about why he believes ProZinc but I gather it is ECID in Sid's case. The vet told me that he typically believes lantus, levemir, or PZI to be the best for cats because they are longer acting and that NPH is not usually as good because it does not last as long. I just hope that Sid can get diagnosed and begin treatment. Whatever underlying condition is going on definitely affected the bg levels and made the insulin react in unexpected ways.

You are right about the dosing. I will ask specific dosing questions on the other forum.
 
Great news for Sid and we always want updates!!!! I hope the regimen the vet is proposing works for him.

Please keep us posted on his biopsy results. Sending him more healing vines.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate your kind words and thoughts. I know that is what is keeping Sid and me going!

Well, I went once again today and visited Sid. He is off fluids and has all of the catheters removed and now only has the feeding tube. However, I noticed the fast breathing again and pointed it out to the vet tech. She said that they had not noticed that in his cage but now she can see it. I am very concerned because this is the behavior he exhibits before the DKA happened before. He is supposed to come home in the morning and now I'm really worried that he is going to come home and go into DKA again.
