Well, as I mentioned yesterday, I took Sid back to the emergency vet last night. When I called them for an update, they told me there was nothing more they could do for him. I was pretty upset when they told me that. They said the DKA would keep happening unless the underlying condition was treated and I believe that is what I've been saying all along. But then they said that Sid was depressed and not alert, etc,. I wonder how they expect him to act when he is feeling so badly? This particular vet is one that I do not like anyway.
So I picked him up (left work) and drove him an hour back to the specialist where he is hospitalized now and will probably stay through Friday. He was somewhat alert. He chirped at me and purred when I petted him and tried to walk around on the floor. Then I realized he was looking for a litterbox because he peed all over me...
The plan is to get his DKA under control, probably install a feeding tube, and then do a scope to see if he has lymphoma. I am a member of the FAF yahoo group too. I have assisted fed 3 of my cats, but have never personally experienced a feeding tube, but I have read other people's experiences. He is definitely getting an e-tube and not a stomach tube if he is stable enough. The specialist said that is only if he can be stabilized and then he will do a scope of his intestines at the same time. Actually, all of his kidney values had improved including his potassium which was no longer low. However, Sid is in very rough shape though and the specialist is concerned that he has lymphoma because he has not shown any improvement since his first hospitalization. He said it will be a real challenge to treat him if lymphoma and/or IBD and/or pancreatitis is definitely present. That is why I appreciate all of your stories.
In fact I told one of the vets about Tawny as proof of a cat that can have DKA 3 times along with a host of other problems and then recover. I just hope the same for Sid!
I think he is in the best hands but I am so sad he is an hour away. That makes it very hard to visit him but I plan to!! I know it lifts his spirits.
I do very much appreciate everyone's kind thoughts and vines and the advice. I appreciate the links and everything. I'm trying to read and retain all of the information I can!
