Well, as I mentioned yesterday, I took Sid back to the emergency vet last night. When I called them for an update, they told me there was nothing more they could do for him. I was pretty upset when they told me that. They said the DKA would keep happening unless the underlying condition was treated and I believe that is what I've been saying all along. But then they said that Sid was depressed and not alert, etc,. I wonder how they expect him to act when he is feeling so badly? This particular vet is one that I do not like anyway.

So I picked him up (left work) and drove him an hour back to the specialist where he is hospitalized now and will probably stay through Friday. He was somewhat alert. He chirped at me and purred when I petted him and tried to walk around on the floor. Then I realized he was looking for a litterbox because he peed all over me... :-D

The plan is to get his DKA under control, probably install a feeding tube, and then do a scope to see if he has lymphoma. I am a member of the FAF yahoo group too. I have assisted fed 3 of my cats, but have never personally experienced a feeding tube, but I have read other people's experiences. He is definitely getting an e-tube and not a stomach tube if he is stable enough. The specialist said that is only if he can be stabilized and then he will do a scope of his intestines at the same time. Actually, all of his kidney values had improved including his potassium which was no longer low. However, Sid is in very rough shape though and the specialist is concerned that he has lymphoma because he has not shown any improvement since his first hospitalization. He said it will be a real challenge to treat him if lymphoma and/or IBD and/or pancreatitis is definitely present. That is why I appreciate all of your stories.

In fact I told one of the vets about Tawny as proof of a cat that can have DKA 3 times along with a host of other problems and then recover. I just hope the same for Sid!
I think he is in the best hands but I am so sad he is an hour away. That makes it very hard to visit him but I plan to!! I know it lifts his spirits.

I do very much appreciate everyone's kind thoughts and vines and the advice. I appreciate the links and everything. I'm trying to read and retain all of the information I can!

Awww, thank you for the photo! It is beautiful.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts. I just hope Sid is doing OK right now. I'm really sad I can't just pop over and visit him like I could at the emergency vet.

I wish you could pop in and see him too. Maybe you can drop of a pillow case with smells of you and home to him tomorrow. He's getting the care he needs so he can come home.

Sending big hugs.

I had the same thought as Karrie -- if you could bring something there that has your scent it may be a comfort to Sid. You are both in my thoughts and my guys and I are sending vines and snowflakes.

taking him something that smells like home is such a good idea. I will do that when I go visit. Thank you for the suggestion.
I just really hope in a couple of months, Sid will be back to "normal" (for a 15yo diabetic cat!) and I can share his survival story like many of you do. That is why I have not given up hope. :-D

God, I know how you feel. I remember how I looked foward all day to my "scheduled" visits to J.D., and how that's all I felt I lived for, were those visits.

Showering Sid with prayers and healing vines. Tawny is sending her own extra special ones to him.

I know, believe me I know, how hard this is. Tawny's clinic was almost 50 miles away & it took almost an hour and a half to get there, one way. It was suggested to me too to take her s/thg from home to snuggle with and I did.

She went into the hospital 3 times in 6 weeks. The e-tube was mentioned from the very 1st hospital stay off and on but after a couple days & an ng tube a couple of times she would start eating on her own and they kept sending her home tubeless. Then a few days later she would go off her food, the ketones would come back, and off we'd go to the ER again.

The 3rd time finally they put the e-tube in. When she went back to the hospital the 3rd time there was all kinds of talk about not putting her thru this again and putting her to sleep and blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. I wouldn't let them do it. It just didn't feel right. I just kept thinking, if they'd just put that tube in...I am convinced it was key to finally saving Tawny's life and putting her on the road to recovery once they finally put it in.

Someone here in one of Tawny's condos (it was either Karrie or Sienne) cautioned me NOT TO GIVE MIRTAZAPINE TO A CAT W/A FEEDING TUBE. I don't remember why, the FAF group can probably tell you or if I get a chance I'll search Tawny's condos for the reason if Sid does get an e-tube.

Prayers & vines continuing to flow...

Oh man - I'm reading this and flashing back to my early days with BK. .,
He was soooo sick - went DKA twice within a couple months -

I was told, by vets "Prepare your mind" and "trying to treat diabetes in a cat that is FIV+ is an uphill battle". . .
I have an invoice from a vet visit that has written across the bottom "Prognosis Poor"

finally pulled him from one vet and took him to a specialist ER an hour (if there was no traffic) away.

Today he is bright eyed and bushy tailed :-D

I'm sorry Sid has to be so far away from you, Lydia. I'd have done exactly the same thing you did when you took him from one clinic and brought him to another. You need to like and trust the people who are caring for him. You and Sid are in my prayers. :YMHUG:

Thinking of you and sending lots of get well hugs to Sid. I hope he will be home and purring in your arms again soon.
