Re: 1/15 Mikey AMPS 205 +2 104 +3 95

I need some input re: prefilling syringes. I know it's not recommended, and I wouldn't do it for any period of time. However, I have a major media event coming up, complete with wacky hours (and no paycheck since it's for a site I co-own. Grrrrr). My roommate can do PS BG's and give his injections, but with his TINY dose and tendency to hypo at anything over that, she's understandably nervous about drawing his dose. I'll be home every night not too long after his injections, except of one night but won't be home in the AM to test. Anyway, is it ok to draw the injections a few hours ahead of time (less than 12 hours, usually more like 4-5, maybe up to 10) if they're refrigerated? I wouldn't draw more than one at a time-AM injection about 6-7 hours early and PM maybe 10 hours early? I read the link in the stick, but it didn't mention hours, only longer than a day. Has anyone predrawn by a few hours and kept it in the fridge? I'd feel a lot safer drawing them myself whenever possible, given Mikey's history. Is it dangerous if the insulin degrades slightly, or simply slightly less effective? I'd rather have slightly higher numbers than a hypo with nobody home. I just got new needles and find the .1 tricky to draw, though I have it down now.

What do you think? Yay or nay?

Re: 1/15 Mikey AMPS 205 +2 104 +3 95 ?? on filling syringes

Most of us don't pre-fill syringes. Here's what I would suggest, though. If you have a couple of days time, have your roommate draw the insulin so you can supervise. That will cause both of you to worry a whole lot less. I'd also leave a sample syringe so there's something for your roommate to compare her syringe with. I'd use a colored liquid (e.g., juice, colored water) to fill the syringe so the liquid is visible. Also, if you can take a close up digital photo of a filled syringe for your roommate, that may help.

I agree with Sienne because I read an article that discussed testing done by the company on prefilled syringes and that even in less than one hour, the insulin in the syringe started to degrade. Both of her ideas ....your roommate practicing and you drawing up sample syringes...are good and what we did when Mike had to give Gracie her shots when I was gone.

When I did the sample syringes, I did not put insulin in them...I just placed the plunger where it was supposed to be to show how much insulin should be in the syringe and then labelled each syringe (I did several different sample doses in case he had to do dosecreases).

I hope this helps....

Re: 1/15 Mikey AMPS 205 +2 104 +3 95 ?? on filling syringes

PMPS 273 Darn, I was really hoping a few hours wouldn't make a difference. As tiny as his dose is and the fact that one drop can make him fall too low really makes it hard for me to trust anyone to draw his dose, especially with the new box of syringes I just got, which are a little fatter and the .1 is about a half a millimeter draw. I think I'll have her draw and squeeze a drop out. I'd rather have him get a little less than too much.

+4 277 His numbers are so bad tonight that i wonder if I got a fur shot...I didn't think I did, but I did have to try twice because he moved, so it's a possibility.
