Last night I spoke about his further disinterest in the insulin injections. He's been backing up and acting very weary around feeding time. I noticed he ate less then he normally does for the day. Yesterday I fed him dinner regularly at his 6:30 PMPS and shot 1u, and he was very skittish the whole time. Barely taken I couple bites, but I got the insulin in.

This morning, Moses threw up an hour before his AMPS. Tested him at AMPS, was 330. Not too bad. Time to feed and inject (didn't want to skip like yesterday!) and he did not want to eat. It was even a brand new cracked can of EVO, he loves that. I tried to peak his interest, but he eventually slumped over in the bedroom. And that's when I injected him  When he least expected it! He did a jerk, but I had to get it in him. With his glucose so high, I thought it'd be okay. I asked my mom to monitor him, b/c I had to go to work.

I just came home half an hour ago. He has barely touched his food. Which is very very very unlike him. Tried twice to do a blood test and both times I didn't get enough blood. I'm going to try again in 20 minutes, let him chill for a bit.

I'm totally freaking out. nailbite_smile

His PMPS is in 4 hours... but if he doesn't ever eat? Please please, I need your smart suggestions.

Heather & Boo might be coming over tonight to do a ketone test. I have no idea what that is, but I'll research in the mean time.

Right now Moses is super lethargic, still purring, likes to be held. But, I'm worried.

Re: 1/10 Moses AMPS 330 - losing appetite, please help

Hi Erica

take a breather and try to calm down ok? I know how nerve wrecking it can be when they don't eat.

Couple of things, do u test or inject near his eating area AND at the same time he is eating? Try not to, do the test, away from eating area, then offer food then pick a place away from the eating area and do the injection.

Can u confirm please, the syringes u are using? All the details that is on the package.

Do u have any treats like freeze dried chicken perhaps? I call this "chicken dust" and do have to sprinkle it on food to get an interest, and it usually works.
Also, I've heard a little parmesan cheese works too, maybe tuna juice or the wet food, also, warming up the wet food, either by microwave - not too hot - just a little warm - or by a couple tsp's of warm water added in the food...this makes it stinky and appealing for kitties.

Those are some tips to spark some interest.

Let's see what others suggest but in the meantime just stay calm. Keep trying for the blood test, and do try to get a number in for +11 this afternoon.

Hi Erica . I am new here but maybe MOses is learning to associate eating and food with the injections and testing and does not like the latter.

Re: 1/10 Moses AMPS 330 - losing appetite, please help

Also, Erica, can u recall what was in the vomit? (sorry have to ask) any sign of hairball?

My best guess is Moses is feeling a bit stressed and skittish at shot time and pokey time....this happened to us to in the beginning.
Try to offer a little bit to nibble on with some incentive like tuna juice or a treat.

But do consider testing and injecting away from food/eating areas if u haven't already.

keep us posted please.

I second the freeze dried treats on top of the food! Jasper use to go crazy for them before we moved (cant get them in Germany)

OT- Where in DFW are you? I use to live in in the N. Richardson area (I miss it!)

Musta submitted somewhere, totally weird.

Ya'll are totally right I think. WHEW!!!

Before I even read your posts I brought his food bowl out into the light of the play room, sang his fav song, and hand feed and he is eating!!!

Cautiously at first but eating.

And then chomping.

Oh my gosh, that was so scary.

:-D Moses was probably thinking to himself....."are you gonna stick me again mommy? I want to eat but I don't know about all this new business going on" They are so smart!

Re: 1/10 Moses AMPS 330 - losing appetite, please help

Okay, okay, I know this is my 3rd post in a row. And I haven't answered any questions.

I just needed a breather.

And in fact I missed my own feeding session for lunch, and I've been sick (still am) and I need brain food.

Moses is good, I repeat, Moses is good. I just got really really scared.

It's most definitely the food association/injection area, blah!

Alright, I must eat, so I can process all this, lol. I'll be back within the hour to tackle the food association so he has happy thoughts towards eating and doesn't starve to death...

alright, deep breath.

How do I change the subject line, Ronnie?
This part will feel good, let's erase that status!

Careful there! Before you know it, he will be having you call him Sir! These kitties are sly ones, and get us to do all sorts of stuff for them. Lots of drama queens, to be sure!

Sometimes I just don't blame the kitties for feeling a bit down, so it's nice to get some extra attention, and for times when they just don't feel like eating, you have to pull out your bag of tricks. You know the stuff that Moses likes the best, so sometimes a bit of the favorite gets them started again. That, and distracting them from the poke and jab routine. Separating the food from the rest should help.

The juice from a can of tuna makes Shadoe go nuts; I used that one time when I came home and found that she had eaten almost nothing, all day long. A bit of some pats, and some tuna juice, and she was back in the food game again.

I hope it's just a bad day for Moses, and he improves soon.

Re: 1/11 Moses AMPS 330

Hello, I'm back, what a day. So I've got short time to tackle Moses' new dinnertime routine. The past couple days, I'd usually test blood right now. And then I'd take him to his eating area (where he's always eaten). And I'd inject him there, thinking he would be distracted by the dinner. But of course, in the end, low, the injections has taken his mind away from the dinner!

So! I'm using Relion Syringes. The box says a capacity of 3/10mlcc (doses up to 30 units). 31 Gauge. Length 8mm (5/16") short needle.

He loves Greenies. And he has this catnip cigar he loves loves loves.

Maybe the best scenario is to lead him out to a new room with the same dinner bowl. And once he starts chomping go for it. Just a change of location tonight, then. I'm not sure. Anybody else have any great ideas? Moses would high appreciate it.

Whew! What a day. Moses and I are calling it a day, it's been exhausting.

Great PMPS number. Couldn't be happier. Nice cap to the evening. I ended up continuing to feed him in the play room, he still has a little eating anxiety, but he's nibbling on par right now :-D

The routine that worked tonight was having my mom hug and hold him, while I injected. She's a nurse so she knew what do, and Moses loved the cuddling so much, I don't think he even felt/knew a thing. Hooray!!! I don't know if this will be a typical routine. But for now... works amazing.

Thanks Paula & Pepper, Paige & Webber, and Ronnie & Luna
Your support helped me get through the day!!! Thank you sooo much!

It's so hard to predict what will work and what won't. I shoot Gabby when her head is in the food bowl without a problem. You could shoot in the same place that you test. Hopefully, testing and treats are associated so adding another stick and another treat will work. That way the reinforcement isn't food. It's also not absolutely essential that Moses eat within a few minutes of a shot. So if you need to separate the two activities, it's not a problem to have time in between.

Hi Erica. Just wanted to pop by to say hello. Was very glad to read that Moses ate! I know, that's such a relief!

The freeze dried chicken has never failed to work if Chloe (or any of her civvies) act disinterested in food. I also give it to Chloe every once in a while after a test, or if she seems a bit out of sorts.

All of this definitely gets easier with time. And, you have a great teacher and support system in Heather. She is a great mama bean to Boo, and was a great source of advice, support and encouragement for me and Chloe!

Have a good sleepus!
