09/11 Jackson - AMPS 333, +3 399, +6 385

He's coming down too gently.
This is what I've been doing for the past hour, getting catnip ready for storage.
I gave a few of the freshly picked stems to the cats, and it was nice to see Jackson running around so fast around the house with his sister.

I didn't know I had so many flowers. They are sweet - spicey - stinky smelling.
I have a lot more catnip plants this year still growing. This is so labor intensive but my cats and I think it's worth it.

Lucky kitties!!! Your catnip has so many flowers. We’re going to have to grow ours next year too.

I've had these same catnip plants growing since 2000. I used to grow them at work to keep them away from my cats. Eventually after years I brought them home. Some actually make it through the winter and some are from the seeds that they shed. One winter my upstairs neighbor didn't clear the snow from her balcony and the water leaking through to my deck filled the planter and then froze, and come warmer weather there the plants were. The past two years (before this one) I thought they were gone for good. I had so so so few catnip plants left in my planters. I would find a little seedling growing out in the lawn somewhere and (rescue it) dig it out before the landscapers could mow it down and replant it into my planter.

One time years decades ago, in the newspaper (remember those?) there was an advertisement from a pet store for a "Happy Hour In The Catnip Bar", so I had to go even though it was a decent drive away. I bought a little variety pack. It was 6 little clear plastic bags and each one had a label on it that said where it came from "Washington", "Northern California", etc. and I always thought that if a policeman ever came to search my house for some strange reason that he would think it was marijuana. Lol

That is so cool! I didn’t know that there were different varieties. We have a whiskey barrel planter we didn’t know what to do with - maybe we’ll turn it into a catnip variety garden :)
