08/07 Butters AMBG none/+10 101/-last update for tonight

Yesterday Butters was finally admitted to the ER at around 1145pm. Her stomach was still pretty full then and also her bladder was enormous. They wound up draining 350mL urine via a catheter. She felt much better after that, apparently, and her pain is being managed with just methadone. Butters has a whole history of holding in her urine until her bladder gets huge, but why she does this is unknown. She does this at home, too. The vet she saw at the regular clinic wonders if there could be a neurological component to this.

The ER vet called this morning to say Butters's stomach looks empty this morning and the IM vet is available to come in this afternoon to do the ultrasound. He will read the images and write a report but he will not call me with the results. It will be an ER vet who calls. So that won't be until much later. They ran bloodwork and urinalysis on her yesterday, but still waiting on those results.

Fingers crossed that all goes well and hopefully I can bring her home tonight!

I hope all kitties surf safely today:cat: Hugs to everyone:bighug:

350ml! The poor thing! Did they figure out why her stomach was so full if she hadn't eaten?

Will wait for updates on the labwork and ultrasound.
Fingers crossed!

Did you manage to get some sleep?

I'm confused, so Butters isn't getting any insulin or they won't let you administer it?
So Butters was at her vet clinic getting fluids until late Thursday night. I shot insulin when I got her home. That's the last time she has had any insulin. She did so poorly overnight that in my rush to get her back into the clinic on Friday morning, I forgot to shoot a little insulin. It would have been too early for me to have been able to shoot anyhow. The vet didn't give her insulin on Friday and the ER vet didn't give her any at the hospital yesterday or today, because she isn't eating.
The hospitals really are a pain about insulin and it drives me nuts. I'm paying you $$$$ and it's that hard to do a BG check or give a shot? Gonna charge me $50 for each? My blood pressure is raising just typing this
I hope they get it figured out soon. X rays around lungs were clear?
That's a good question, Melissa. I was just reading about Mr. Kitty. They didn't mention anything about seeing anything around the lungs so I assumed all was clear. It was the bladder and stomach they were focused on.
At this place, they charge a much higher fee for monitoring her because she is diabetic. But they haven't checked her BG or given her insulin yet, sooo.....:banghead:.

No. The vet who read the images from yesterday's ultrasound refused to make a firm diagnosis on that, only saying that maybe there is a mass or obstruction or stomach wall thickening. But wouldn't commit to a diagnosis there. Hopefully I'll know why after today's ultrasound and hopefully it can be treated.
Did you manage to get some sleep?
Not at all. Too worried.[/QUOTE]

Prayers for your kitty and you, Lyla. Must be painful for her to have that much urine stored inside. I hope you are able to get some rest today and that you can bring your Butters home today.

Yes I'm asking because even though it's a bit rare, a blockage in thorax area can also cause fluid build up. You'd probably notice breathing issues though. I thought Mr Kitty was having a pancreatitis flare because all the symptoms were so similar, but nothing was working. Then towards the end of the week I noticed the breathing issues.

And I know, they see diabetic and it's automatically an upcharge even if they don't do what they're supposed to, I'm sorry :/ we were charged like $1000 for anesthesia and chest tap, not to mention the overnight stay...when our vet does it without anesthesia for $80.

Whatever happens today, I hope it's an easy solution for Butters (and you)!

Morning Lyla, I'm glad Butters will have the ultrasound this afternoon. I pray they can get to the bottom of this, you and Butter's have been through so much, you need to catch a break here. Sending prayers for your sweet girl, I know you can't sleep Lyla, just try and get some rest. I know you will keep us updated ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Fingers and all paws crossed here that Butters can come home tonight. Would the lack of motility and bladder movement be related to her seizures? Is there anything that can be done about neurological issues?

Wow that's a lot of urine. I'm glad you have an ultrasound scheduled. I hope you can get some answers and she can come home soon. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

(((Lyla)))

I missed yesterday’s post and I’m so sorry. Poor little Butters and I know you are beside yourself with worry. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Wishing Butters quick recovery and I hope you get good news soon and get your girl home. Tons of white healing light and vines coming her way.

Hi Lyla, I hope the ultrasound will give you answers about what’s going on with Butters. You are both in our loving thoughts and prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Lyla, checking for updates. Hope Butters is doing better. Hope you get a diagnosis from the ultrasound. Hope Butters gets to come home today. Sending loving prayers and positive responses to my “hopes”. :bighug::bighug:

Grrr I'm with @FrostD on this one, my BP going up just to read it. Higher fee for 'monitoring' when they don't tell you what 'monitoring' means..I would hope they are checking BG for that AND will give you those values, but I bet it isn't (even if you have to ask them to tell you the BG). I also don't understand how they can say "maybe there is a mass or obstruction or stomach wall thickening" if her stomach looked empty today, unless I suppose the full bladder was pushing something into view. Just thinking out loud here, I'm sure nothing that you haven't already wondered yourself.

Good luck with the u/s results and when Butters comes home that her BG is still not too bad. :bighug::bighug: Hope you can squeeze some kind of rest in there too for yourself AND eat something. If you're like me, as soon as she's home you will abandon looking after yourself!

Hi Lyla, just want to ditto what Liz said about taking care of Lyla. I have a funny memory of you waking up covered in test strips,:p it was awhile ago. Get some rest while you can, coming from someone that spends more time talking about needing rest than actually getting any. For me, lack of sleep makes for a very off center me that tends to over inflate everything. I apologize if I am being annoying. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Lyla
I'm not on the board every day but when I am I always check in to see how your sweet girl is doing. I'm so sorry to hear of all the concerns with Butters. I will be praying for her and YOU! Take care of yourself. I hope things get better soon. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you all so much for keeping Butters in your thoughts and prayers, and for coming by to comment:bighug::bighug::bighug:.

Not much to update with, unfortunately as the IM vet hasn't come in yet. I just got an update from the ER vet and she said he may not come in until tomorrow, and even then will only come in if there are a few patients needing ultrasound (ie won't come in just for one patient). So more realistic is that she will get the ultrasound by Monday. All of her lab work came back and was all basically normal. Creatinine kinase was slightly elevated and there was a tiny amount of protein in her urine, but they weren't worried about that and said it was more likely they collected it before the needle reached her bladder. She is continuing to get methadone and the vet says she is resting comfortably. If the IM vet doesn't come in today, they will try to feed her later tonight. Vitals are all normal.

They are keeping the catheter in her to keep draining her urine.

They finally checked her BG and it was 101. She hasn't eaten anything, though. They said if she eats they'll check BG again and give her Lantus if it starts to go up.

I kind of hate that she is stuck there, but I'm glad that she seems to be resting and comfortable. If I pull her out of there, she no longer gets priority for an ultrasound and possible endoscopy if one is needed. I'd really like for them to feed her though I worry whether her stomach will not empty again.

Fingers and all paws crossed here that Butters can come home tonight. Would the lack of motility and bladder movement be related to her seizures? Is there anything that can be done about neurological issues?
I'm not sure about either question. Her primary vet had previously put neurological issues on the back burner because we were dealing with the allergies, dental issues and heart. The vet she saw in the clinic on Thurs&Fri said she is going to call a neuro vet and talk with him about Butters and see what he thinks. Looks like neuro may have to be prioritized now after whatever is going on gets sorted out.

Her breathing has been good throughout so far. They're paying close attention to it because she also has a heart problem and is receiving fluids. Hugs to Mr Kitty:bighug:

Aww, sweet Butters ❤️ glad she is at least resting comfortably. Paws crossed for some answers from the ultrasound, whenever it happens :bighug: Hugs mama bean :bighug:

Thanks for the update Lyla but wish more was being done and time frame not so sketchy for ultrasound. Praying she continues to rest comfortably and you as well if possible.
Continued prayers and hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

The ER vet just called. She said the IM vet says he is going to try to come in early tomorrow to do her ultrasound. One of the major highways here is closed all weekend for maintenance and that is his route to work. So she decided to try to get Butters to eat. She ate some salmon fancy feast. It's the first food she has eaten on her own in days. I think the methadone must be helping her to feel better, because she has been having pretty bad pain without it. The bupe and gabapentin were not cutting it.

The vet also mentioned she saw swelling around Butters's eyes. She couldn't tell at first if Butters was squeezing her eyes closed but then she realized they were swollen and a little teary. She checked for a corneal scratch but there wasn't one. The vet wants to give antibiotics but said she will hold off for now because she doesn't want anything to interfere with the ultrasound. I wondered about a herpes flare. I don't love that she is jumping right to antibiotics so quickly.

She is going to time giving Butters a little food overnight so that hopefully the IM vet will be able to get some info on whether there is delayed emptying and why.

That's the last update for today. The ER vet said as long as Butters stays stable overnight then the next call I receive will be from her tomorrow morning.

Thank you again everyone for caring about Butters:bighug:. I am going to try to make my way around and catch up with the kitties on the board. I care a great deal about all of them...gosh I've been so out of touch.

We're all rooting for Butters to get better. Happy to hear that she is eating on her own and that they are sensible enough to feed her low carb food. Hopefully the IM has the experience to help with all of her issues. Big hugs to you, cat mama. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for the update Lyla. Gets some rest. Will be back tomorrow to check on you and any updates on Butters. :bighug::bighug:

Thinking of you and Butters and hoping for good news...or at least some more definitive answers! Great news that she was eating and resting comfortably:bighug:.

All paws crossed!
