Squallie seems happy enough today, but he has been sleeping in unusual places, which worries me a little bit. He also vomited his lunch today, possibly due to the ABs, although one of the other cats wouldn't touch the same food, so maybe that can was a bit off.

Well, I think I found out why he threw up - he's constipated. I know I can give Miralax, but don't know the correct dosage (I've only ever given it to help a slow system, not for actual, current constipation), or is there something else I should give him, instead? He's never been constipated before.

I've never used miralax but I have used pumpkin or coconut oil. I gave Asia around a tsp of coconut oil and it seemed to help the same day. Pumpkin I feel is more of a maintenance solution rather than a one time fix. I've also heard pumpkin can bulk the stools too much, though it hasn't been a problem here. Lots of people give miralax though, hope someone chimes in soon.

Thanks, Stacy! Will any coconut oil do, or does it have to be a specific type? I have never used it before.

Plain pumpkin (start with about 1/2 tsp in fud or if will eat from spoon, super) or coconut oil (about the same amount) or SEB or SEB/AVJ have been our go to’s. Will look for the link about SEB

Eta here’s a link about SEB just in case:

@Squalliesmom - Gill posted dose above. Since you're already dealing with constipation, I'd use a rounded 1/8th (or shallow 1/4th). Besides water in food, syringe a few cc's of water in his mouth as many times as you can thru the day. I use Miralax often for my 'poopy issues kitty' and others as needed.

EDIT TO ADD: And what Jill said too! She posted while I was typing...

Actually been contemplating this myself the past day or so. Not for me yo understand. Ref. Tyler.

Hope Squallies poop machine returns to normal log production soon as. Constipation always makes one feel horrid.

Can you say anything about when the last time he went was (how much, how hard)? Why do you think he is constipated? This will help determine how aggessive you need to be. As @Stacy & Asia mentioned, there are different things required for an acute situation vs routine maintenance.

Throwing up can create a vicious circle because hydration is so important to combat constipation. Others have already suggested extra water w/ miralax. I would add as much extra as he will tolerate.

Best wishes for some quick relief for Squallie bear!

I second Jill's suggestion of coconut oil or another oil. I have had good results with the coconut oil, it works wonders! But I am sure that olive oil could do the trick also. The miralax I do believe takes time for it to work.

I start low. Remember it won't be immediate. Too much will result in poo going the other direction once it starts :p

I add 1/16-1/8 teaspoon and spread it over his snacks/meals in his cycle. I will do 2-3 cycles and then stop for 1-2 cycles, rinse, repeat. Add water and/or give fluids. Gizmo isn't prone to severe constipation but does need softening occasionally.

Thanks, Stacy! Will any coconut oil do, or does it have to be a specific type? I have never used it before.

I'm sure any will do, I just use what I buy for our cooking needs. Pure, unrefined, cold pressed organic coconut oil in a giant tub from Costco. :p

If you've never used it before just know it's a solid or a liquid depending on temperature (somewhere in the 70s F). I gave it as a liquid to Asia's food.

I think Olive oil will work in a pinch but I have it in my head it's not a great option for the kidneys and I don't remember why, sorry. Swiss cheese brain sometimes.

Hi Lucy
When is the last time Squallie “went”?
We use Miralax and if its only been a day or two Miralax may do the trick. If its been longer than something more fast acting like the others said. I never tried the oils. I’ve just had to bring in Ming to the vet..he would have a poop crowning:confused: and needed the vet to remove.
Hope it resolves and he feels better soon :bighug:

Okay, here's all the details:

~pretty sure he went yesterday morning
~noticed him getting in box but not doing anything, for the last 2-3 days, was worried about urinary problems
~threw up lunch immediately after eating today
~ this afternoon when he got in the box he strained for a while and finally, as he was leaving, deposited 2 very small (smaller than my baby fingernail) dark nuggets

I went to the store and got Miralax - little country store, so no coconut oil or mineral oil. I have olive oil, and I have butter. Thought I would start with adding some butter to his dinner, along with some Miralax and extra water. Or would that be too much? I know the Miralax takes longer to work, sometimes a few days, figured if I gave the butter as well, it might works faster, while the Miralax starts it's thing.

I think that sounds like a good plan. Just not familiar with butter and oils. Like how much and how often to give. I’m hoping that since Squallie doesn’t normally get constipated it’ll happen quickly.

Housed to use Miralax and pure canned pumpkin. You are right it takes time to work though. Some give enemas but I’d go to the vet before doing that. Hope he produces soon. Wendy sent you to a really good site.

Lots of poop vines for Deputy Squallie this evening. I hope the various remedies will work. Rusty is on a stool softener called Lactulose, but I think you have to get the constipation issue settled as a first step.

:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lucy, if he hasn’t had a normal poop by morning I’d take him to vet . We have had lots of practice at giving enemas and using baby suppositories but since you’ve never done either it’s probably best to let vet do it . It’s amazing Squallie has never experienced being “ plugged up” , as DH puts it :woot: Poor , sweet Squallie :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: Praying Big poopy prayers for him tonight :bighug:

Thank you all for your wonderful advice. Unfortunately, he got no meds, butter, oils, etc tonight because I ended up in the ER and my son fed the cats. He also didn’t get his PM shot because he was only at 88 and no one would be there to keep an eye on him. I will probably be calling the vet in the morning (provided the hospital lets me go!); I won’t have any way of knowing if he’s “gone” or not.

Oh Lucy! I'm so sorry, Squallie will be just fine. Take care of you and get better soon. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh, no , Lucy :bighug::bighug::bighug: Please take care of yourself and Squallie will be fine :cat:. Prayers coming your way that you are well and able to come home tonight :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lucy hope you are okay, feel better soon.

Miralax can take up to 3 days to work. Once you start you might want to give routinely to prevent constipation. Pumpkin and miralax kept Smokey very regular.

Still in the ER - waiting interminably - but will update when able. Thank you all for your well-wishes.

Never a dull moment, lol.

Hey there, checking in. So sorry to hear you've had to go the ER. Sending tons of well wishes and will check in later tonight.

Poor Squallie too! I had a lot of experience with using Miralax for Uncle but it looks like you got a lot of good info already. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you all so much! I am home from the hospital, thankfully; fingers crossed I don't have to go back any time soon! One good thing about it was that I was in an area with real stores, lol, so I could pick up some coconut oil. I managed to get a little bit in him, mixed into some food. I will try again in the morning with his breakfast, and add some Miralax, too. Please keep the poop vines coming!:)

Welcome home, my fingers are crossed too that you won't have to go back anytime soon :stop:

Oh, I forgot to mention how much I love Squallie's new (to me) picture, SO CUTE!
Just a friendly reminder to make sure you give Squallie extra water when you start using the Miralax tomorrow ;)

Thanks, Barbara! It's always so good to hear from you!:):bighug::bighug::bighug:

I always give extra water when I give Miralax (I have a civvie that gets it fairly regularly), but thanks for the reminder, just the same. :)

Ums. Not being nosey. Not being extra flipping well noseholes or anything. Not being a nosey parker or anything. Not being really mega naughty intrusive or anything.

BUT . I've been in suspense for hours here. :arghh:

Did you lose you feet and ankles ? An eye? A Dr Who 2nd heart? Blood? Gore? Eyebrow?

I do live in NZ y'know.

Things can be.........................................................................................................................................quiet.

:bighug:Good Wednesday morning , Lucy :bighug: Praying you wake to a pooping Squallie;) As @PussCatPrince said, no cowpats or splats :joyful: ( loved the Dr Who reference :joyful:) and prayers that you are fully healed and strong . And of course after the ER you had presence of mind to go shopping for Squallie :bighug: You are amazing , Lucy :bighug::) Thoughts and prayers coming your way from down here in the Ozarks all day today :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lol, I'd love a Dr. Who 2nd heart! Actually, I'd love just a Dr. Who, as long as it was David Tennant, lol!
No blood and gore, still have all my appendages, nothing so exciting or newsworthy. My heart started beating out of control, averaging 180 beats per minute. Scary, but back to normal now!

Oh Lucy! I am glad you got control of your heart! And poop vines for Sqallie Bear.

How are you dealing with the FORLS? If I remember correctly Squallie isn't a candidate for sedation. How are you keeping him in such good numbers?

Many thanks to @Stacy & Asia, @HWright, @Gill & George, @Jill & Alex (GA), @Squeaky and KT (GA), @PussCatPrince, @Carol in Chicago, @Shoeskitty , @Bobbie And Bubba , @Wendy&Neko , @LizzieInTexas , @Beenie (GA) , @tiffmaxee ,@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) , @Beth 73 , @Love-Paula aka Woodsywife, @Barbara & Uncle , @carfurby for your help and advice, and for your well-wishes! (Hope I didn't miss anybody). :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Still no poop, but I have gotten some Miralax and some coconut oil into him, so fingers crossed. If nothing changes by this afternoon I am going to make an appointment at the vet for him.

I am fine now, had a problem with my heart beating out of control last night. It was scary, but it's back to normal now.

Thanks, Bobbie.

Yes, he does have FORLS, and is not a candidate for sedation. We have just been really lucky that he hasn't had any real problems from it. He has lost one canine to it, and has visible lesions on at least three other teeth. One of them seemed irritated so he's doing a course of ABs right now to keep any infection at bay. So, I guess the plan of action is just to keep away any infection, and treat any associated pain, although he hasn't had any real pain from them, yet, as far as I can determine.

The vet Bubba saw on Monday did not think he needed an AB, but seeing how his numbers escalated, I am sure he did. This RL was the worst! I am so glad that Squallie is holding his own with the problem. I never realized that only a % of kitties are prone to these lesions. Lucky our boys, eh? Were you told of anything you would do that could help besides brushing his teeth? This time, I will brush them more often even through he fights me so.

Squallie hates anything in his mouth so brushing is almost impossible. I also figure it must hurt when the brush hits those lesions! I use a powder that I sprinkle over his food, and an additive to his water; they do seem to help some.

I’m going to check these products out for Elmo . Wonder if they can be used with aging kidneys that we deal with too ? With all 3 of mine they get COQ10 3x a week and coconut oil “brushed” ( more like “ placed” ) daily on their gums /teeth . My civvie has lost all but one molar to this so I feel your pain. At 15 our civvies can still have dentals but I do all as preventative .

They don't seem to have hurt Squallie's kidneys, but definitely check it out with your vet first! I really do think it has helped Squallie. :):cat:
