LL peeps!

I wasn't going to open a condo in LL to talk about b/w -> I feel like I'm polluting an insulin environment - but it's the best place to draw attention to people in LL because you are the BEST and most resourceful people out there!

Tizon's dental has been 'paused' while we (the vet) investigate the elevated calcium issue... so please feel free to take bets on what else is wrong with this cat.... pls no offence to peeps who need a pharmacy degree (almost) to handle all the meds their cat needs.

Blood is being sent to lab and forwarded to the US for calcium profile (ionized calcium, pth and pthrp tests). I wish this wasn't a show stopper for his dental, but apparently it is....

I hope my google doc in my signature works. I did test it.

O.K., so I don't know anything about cats...but those values aren't really high at all. Just barely off the top range. And look at how wide the lipase is anyway...you're barely off that; percentage wise, it's not at all a lot.

If I were to bet, I'd say something is going on regarding hydration...but not his kidneys, because his BUN and cre is not too bad at all. Hypercalcemia can be a dilution issue...and with his H&H being a tad high, I'd say he's not getting enough liquid (those are called hemo-concentrated). Does he clot fast when you got blood before? I'd suspect so...

Of course, again, I don't know anything about cats. If this were a human, I'd say 'drink more water and keep an eye on it', but that's for humans...

Anyway, good luck, and let me know what the vet says...I'm curious as to how it compares with humans.

Best-
Michele

Hi, Helene,

Sorry about this glitch in Tizon's dental plans! I wanted to send some good karma and vines and snowflakes, since today is Kitty's special day, and you helped us get there! Thanks for being my bed-check conscience!

The potassium is low enough to discuss supplementation with your vet. It is recommended to start supplements at the low end of normal (below 4.4). The serum potassium can be higher than the amount actually available to the cells.

I'm sorry you had to postpone the dental. I don't know anything about the calcium, but I agree with Linda about the potassium. I give Blackie a potassium supplement and it's about the easiest supplement we give him. Please let us know what you hear back from the vet. Sending healing vines and energies to Tizon and calming vines to you.

I'm anxious to hear more about the calcium, I don't know anything about it. Please keep us posted.
Sorry about the dental delay.

No bets, no ideas - I'm totally unqualified to make any suggestions here.

Instead, I'll send good wishes and healing thoughts and hope that whatever is going on is an easy fix.

WCF - you win a fabulous prize!!!!!! The Nostra Jojo crystal ball! Com'on down!!!!!

That's exactly what they collected for this morning and the boy had been fasting for 11 hours! They also redid the regular calcium in house and sent away my wallet :o for PT and PTHrp and for ionized calcium.

Thanks everyone for your encouragement and for the potassium issue. I'm writing this down.

i can't accept it  we had a hypercalcemia scare a few years ago, and our vet ordered the same tests. that's how i know them ;-) we run the basic parathyroid profile every quarter now, for a diff reason, and i am now very familiar with that the requirements for that test.

hmmm. the two tests are only around $70, and then there's shipping cost - overnight fedex. if you paid substantially more (even taking into account your vet's prep and material fees), you may have paid the mark-up to a middle-person (probably antech or idexx?) to ship it onward to MSU. (we ship direct to MSU, is cheaper, but no idea how you'd do that from Canada. many vets here also don't seem to know we can ship direct, for less than routing through one of the major labs). sounds like it may not make it in time for the monday tests, the next round is thursday.

Hi Helene, I'm not knowledgeable on these scientific/medical issues, but Stu and I want to wish you and Tizon good results from your tests. "Good results vines" are heading your way.
