? 02/22 Molly AMPS 364 Question regarding Cerenia

We talked about this before, but maybe Miralax isn’t the best laxative for Molly. I would talk to the vet about Lactulose.

I'm sorry Molly isn't feeling well, I hope she starts eating and you can get to the bottom of this ,by the way that link opens for me about the slippery elm bark. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Lactulose is a common human med, so you can get at a pharmacy here. Dosing would have to come from your vet.

If pancreatitis, you treat the symptoms, so anti-nausea so that means Cerenia/ondansetron for nausea, pain relief, possibly fluids. But it would be a good idea to get the vet to diagnose what is bothering Molly so you can treat whatever it is properly.

Don’t be scared. If she doesn’t improve then you can take her back to the vet. I just found where you posted those labs back in January. I see that they did not test her for pancreatitis BUT that there was no reason for them to test her for it at the time. It was just a wellness check to make sure everything was okay and for the vet to recommend something to calm her down when she travels.

I see that at the bottom of the bloodwork, the laboratory recommendation to do a urinalysis and we talked about it. I don’t think she ever had one done.
And if she has pancreatitis then you can treat her with fluids, pain meds and things like Cerenia and Ondansetron.

There is definitely a problem with the constipation site. I have that confirmed. Don’t
click on it. I will let you know when I hear more and it is safe.

I too am a fan of ondansetron. I didn’t suggest it because it did cause constipation in Max. Then would increase the amount of miralax he got.

So anyway, the bottom line is that we don’t really know what is going on with Molly, and it’s best not to speculate too much on what it could be. There are way too many possibilities. It’s only going to be upsetting to speculate. The vet was hoping this would pass and she would improve with Cerenia and time(and Miralax). If you give it a little more time and she’s still not eating and still has diarrhea, then take her back and ask them about things like gastroenteritis and pancreatitis (if they don’t already mention it.) Or ask them their plan to find out what is going on. At my vet’s office, one of the bets just kind of waits for me to tell him what I want him to do — and the other vet comes up with a suggested plan of action first. So they’re different in how they do things. Maybe you should call and make her an appointment for later this week (will you be able to take her during the week or not until Saturday?) and that way you will have a time slot reserved for Molly. If she gets better, you can cancel the appointment one day before. If not, you can take her? Just a suggestion….

I personally don't think it's pancreatitis, but I could be wrong. I did call the vet and requested to see Molly's vet. The one I seen on Sunday was the emergency vet. Anyways I have to call Friday and request a time to see Molly's vet. He will listen to my suggestions. I really hope she's better by then, and I don't know what to do with the Cerenia she has today and tomorrow left.

It could be so many things. See what your vet thinks.

Didn’t you give the Cerenia this morning? Or are you doing it at night? It’s just once a day so I was wondering. I don’t think it’s hurting her.

I give it to her in the evening an hour before her shot.
You know, right, that Cerenia is really bitter and bad tasting. Are you putting it into a gelatin capsule so she won’t taste it? And are you chasing it down with a treat and/or water? Are you giving a half or a whole. Are they 16mg tablets?

or are you using a pill pocket? As long as she doesn’t bite into it and taste the med that will be okay.

I just googled where she lives its 11:12 AM , hopefully we will hear something in a few hours
Okay. She’s Pacific time - three hours behind us. I couldn’t remember how far west in Canada that you are Adrienne. Isn’t it cool, Diane and Adrienne, that this board keeps us all connected and that we are able to help and support and care for the people and cats here — from all over the world?

Hi ladies,
Molly didn’t touch any food. So I opened up a can of friskies chicken pate. She did eat a little, doesn’t want anything to do with FF. Tried the chicken I cooked nothing. She drank some water and had a pee in the litter box. She’s now cleaning herself.
The Cerenia is 16mg and I put it in a pill pocket, she loves those.
It’s 12:48 pm here

Something is wrong. How much does she weigh? Cerenia should be about 1mg per lb of cat. There is a little leeway in that, but I was just wondering how much she weighs

I read the side effects are no appetite and diarrhea?
I can't say I ever had those as side effects just from the Cerenia with Mr Kitty. Usually the inappetence was due to the whole issue (like pancreatitis), but to be fair I almost always was using an appetite stimulant with it. Never had diarrhea with it.

All I can say is that I have used Cerenia for years in various cats. I have never had inappetence or diarrhea with it. I have never had a bad reaction to it, but every cat is different! I am not saying that you either should or should not keep using it. That’s up to you. You could skip tonight to see if there is a difference? It’s up to you.
