02/10 Comet - OTJ Update

Hey everyone,
It feels like it’s been a really long time since I posted on here. Just wanted to give a quick update as we go on almost 4 months OTJ with Comet. He has been doing good. Had to have a few medication changes and add on some additional meds + 100ml of sub q fluids 3x a week with his CKD/Renal disease. He has almost progressed to stage 4, but we have since started him on a few meds and foods to get his creatinine to come down a smidge. I have been checking him a lot more frequently in the last month because of the new meds & the fact that he only wants Renal food, which is high in carbs. I think he has been doing good glucose wise. So we are going to cut back to checking once a week. What do you think!?
Thanks everyone, hope you and your babies have been well. Much love.

With high carb food I would not cut back much on testing. If almost stage 4 daily fluids would be better perhaps. How much does he get? I’m glad he’s doing well overall.

Hello, so do you suggest we still test daily/every other even if no real big changes?
Vet wanted 250ml 3x a week, but we are doing 100ml (he’s 12 lbs) every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesdays he gets a full pouch of Hydracare. I was told in the CKD group not to exceed 100ml a day. We started with 3x a week to see how he does. He absolutely LOVES getting the warm fluids. We put the needle in and he instantly rolls to his side purring away. :cat:

Also when he was diagnosed his creatinine was 3.1, then he went down to 2.7, a few months later after Diabetic remission (eliminating renal food) he was 3.7, then went to 4.5. All within about a year. His creatinine last week was now 4.1 so that puts him at about end stage 3

I agree about no more than 100ml subq I would do 50-75ml daily though. You don’t need to test BG daily. I would test weekly for awhile just because of the higher carb food. Do what is comfortable for you though.

Hi Amanda,
I agree with @tiffmaxee that daily fluids may be the best choice as long as your vet believes it is safe. If Comet has any heart concerns, daily might not be best. Goodness, 250ml at once would be a bigger stress on the heart than 100ml daily. That sounds horrible - I don’t want to imagine the size of the water bump.

I smiled big when reading how much Comet enjoys the warm fluid:bighug: My Tina enjoyed her sessions for over two years.
