Another exciting night for Vyktor last night  Looks like he's finally getting with the program! It is just wonderful to think about that pancreas of his healing.

Many thanks to Sandy for her advice earlier in our evening, luckily we averted a stall by the skin of our teeth and the results were amazing. Thanks to the cheer squad too, beaming from ear to ear here

Although after last night and Thursday night I am wondering whether our schedule is right. During the working week I get an AMPS and then don't get another test until +6. On Thursday night I knew low numbers were coming because of the plus +4 if it had been a workday I would arrived home to a very unexpected 52  Now that he's seeing some green numbers I'm not sure that is good enough. He does have food available while I'm gone but still it is a little concerning.

Do I need to start trying to get a +2 before I go to work to ensure Vyktor's safety? This creates a bit of a problem, although I work on flexi time (so as long as I get the hours done it is okay) whichever way I try to plan it I would not be able to get my full day in if I get that +2. Obviously Vyktor's safety comes first so I could see about working reduced hours if necessary - thoughts anyone?

Guess I'm going to have to buy one of those timed feeders too. The opposite problem of everyone else - being a free feeder it won't be so he gets an extra meal, it will be so it cuts off his food 2 hrs before his shot - I haven't been getting up at 4am to do that. His bowl is usually empty in the morning but he may very well have been eating a bit after the 4am cut off some mornings, it hasn't mattered so much with his numbers so high but the dance tune is changing...

Recap:
AMPS 364
+3 302
+6 268
+9 169
+10 157
+11 133
PMPS 137
+2 86
+3 77
+4 70
+5 86
+6 112
+8 286

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 boing!

what a wonderful night vyktor had! wahoo for those great numbers!

i have a 5 compartment feeder and i have to say, i wondered why i didn't get one earlier. i wasn't working when punkin got diagnosed so didn't feel like i needed it, but it gives me some peace of mind to know he will get fed now before i get home from work. wish i'd gotten it earlier!

we got the kind that rotates so punkin can't break into it. hahahaha not to say he would, but we know how much he likes his food. ;-)

i'm not sure what to suggest about work. punkin has fairly flat, predictable cycles, so i feel pretty confident coming home at his +5.5. right now i have him eating at +3, and if i'm concerned i can put med carb in for another feeding after that.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 boing!

I am a big fan of the +2 since Marje convinced me of its utility. At first I didn't see the point... the insulin hasn't kicked in yet! But since that is when Lantus onsets, the +2 is the number you actually shot - once I saw it that way I became devoted to my +2 unless I know that she's bouncing. I would rather have the +2 than the +6 in fact - but I am not one of the wise ones. Is it possible for you to get the +2 and then a +7 or +8 on your work days? I know we dose off of the nadir, but I don't think you need to hit it every cycle as long as you are getting some kind of spot checks. But wait for the dosing experts to weigh in :-D

BTW great job yesterday! You and Vyktor are getting to be old pros now

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 boing!

Wow, what a great pm cycle for Vyktor. Maggie free feeds, too, and I do have a two compartment feeder which I sometimes use for her. With the overnight food I leave for her, I have the same problem as you with her eating close to the two hour pre-shot time.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 boing!

No advice from me on dosing either but I also have the 2 compartment feeder, The Cat Mate C20, suggested to me by Sienne. Whenever I leave Morgaine for the day I set it up for her 2 feedings and off i go. I know how you feel about leaving Vyktor with green numbers popping up now. I don't work outside of the home so I do not have that issue but when I leave her for appts I try to keep her numbers in the blues. I am sure some expert advice will be along to help you out soon.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 boing!

Hi Serryn:

What a beautiful night for Vyktor last night and he's clearing his bounces faster. Yay...a dose he likes!!! Sorry I missed the excitement but I was zzzzzzzzzzz

As Melissa said, I'm a firm believer of a +2 for lantus kitties. If there is any way you can modify your work schedule to get that +2, it would be great. Then you can decide on whether to leave food in an auto feeder. Of course, you have to make it all work for you.

You and Vyktor are doing fantastic!! So glad you found us!

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293

Hi Serryn,

In my condo yesterday you asked about my Cat Mate two compartment feeder. I believe it may be the same one as Rosalie's above. Yes, I can set it for two different times to feed Mags. For instance when I leave, I can set the time for an hour after I leave, say 11:00 am would be one setting, and then 1:00 am would be another timed setting. This auto feeder comes with an ice pak, too, which is nice to keep the food cool in the warmer weather. Hope you get some rest tonight.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252

So it looks like I may have shot a falling number. After yesterday and the way his numbers looked at +6 today I made sure I came home early and got a +10, but based on the +10 I didn't worry about getting a +11 and went for a walk instead. Then came the PMPS 40 points lower than the +10. No one was logged on so I didn't have time to ask. My thoughts were that since it was yellow it would be okay anyway - did I stuff up? Should I have stalled under these circumstances?

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252

40 points in 2 hours isn't too steap of a fall in numbers. His bounce could be breaking. I would start with a +2.
I would have done the same thing, as long as I was going to be home to monitor. You have alarm clocks for yourself, right? Because I know you must be tired.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252

Phew. I'm lucky you're such an early riser Dyana, or are you just in an earlier part of the country than most others? Now I can relax and see if I can't have a litte half hour nap before +2. I figure when I get tired enough I will perfect the art of the nap :-D - as long as I don't also perfect the art of sleeping through the alarm clock!

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252

Vyktor is dong so well! Oh, you too Serryn! It's so exciting when this kind of action starts. The fine art of cat napping is just one more thing our kitties are teaching us. The not sleeping through the alarm part may be a little harder.

Hi Serryn, and yay for Vyktor! I hope Vyktor gives a nice surf today so you can get some sleep.

I do believe you were/are likely fine. In time as you gather your data about how Vyktor is reacting to insulin you will get more comfortable shooting. Remeber that ideally lantus is a flat curve or cycle.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246

Hi Serryn,
I concur: you were right not to stall. Also, keep in mind the 20% of meter variance.
Rusty has the CatMate C-20, two-compartment feeder also. It would be ideal for you in your climate, since it has a cold pack that fits under the feeder trays. I am not a fan of the rotary feeders. If the cat misses the time for the next compartment, the food is whisked away under the cover and is unavailable. Also, you have to be sure that the compartments do not stop half-way into the opening. If they do, the cat can't get his head in to get the food! (I had this problem with Stu's rotary feeder and finally got rid of it--it was the other brand, however-- "PetSafe"?--the CatMate 5-compartment rotary feeder might be better.)

Good luck with your schedule.

Ella & Rusty

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246

Nice cycle yesterday for Vyktor...he is starting to catch on to this whole thing!

I tried one of the rotary feeders with Trix, so I could give her a snack at +8. I went with the rotary style so I could program it to shut before +10. She LOVES to eat, but never caught on to the feeder. Hopefully Vyktor will love his!

Have a great day...or evening...or sleep (whichever is most appropriate!!)

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

The cutting off of the food at +10 is my problem with Vyktor rather than wanting a device to give him food. I am always around to give him food - he rules with an iron paw!

All the rotary feeders I have seen are the same shape though and it doesn't look like a great shape for a cat to eat from, Vyktor prefers a fairly flat dish.

I don't think I can add another alarm to get up and take the food away either I don't think my body/brain would take it, I suspect there would be a revolt and I would just start sleeping through them

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

Hi guys .. wow what an exciting cycle for Vyktor! You did great handing it .. like the blue at +4 too .. we bought mocha the 5 compartment feeder .. she always heard it going off and was always able to get to her fuds, but she is a foody and nothing will stop her

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

Hi Serryn, I see what you mean by cutting off the food. My Cat Mate feeder stays open with the lid, so if you had this same one, Vyktor could still eat after the +10. I guess you need another maker where it rotates, but I understand with the plate not being flat it might not work. I hope some others comment and come up with a solution. Maggie doesn't care for the feeder but would eat if hungry enough.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

Looking good there

You made the right call - your gut instinct was right on.
Back in our days of learning the dance, one of the wise ones of those times used to say that with Lantus (being a slow acting insulin) you are really shooting a number 3 or so hours into the future.rather than the PS. Another good reason to gather as much early cycle data as possible an get to know approximate onset time.

Regarding timed feeders, we use the 5 compartment kind. What I would do with BK is program mini meals for +4 and +8. As he started feeling better I noticed he was often taking his time about eating the +8 meal. I'd be coming over (he lives in a building separate from our house) to give him his shot and find him finishing up the +8 meal.
So I programmed a +10 into the feeder and placed a nice chunk of kitty crack there. I didn't want to have it go off empty - when he hears the feeder turn he moves like lightning and expects food!

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

Vyktor is looking great Serryn!!--I also use the 2 section Cat Mate and yes it does stay open, so there is constant access--Moonie likes to nibble often, so it is ideal when we are not there--Also the ice pack helps a lot!
You & Vyktor are doing GREAT!!!!! WHOOO HOOOO :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

I move kind of slow in the morning, so I have to get up at least two hours before leaving for work in order to do all the morning stuff. The first thing I do is take away any food Weezer didn't eat overnight and one of the last things I do before leaving is her test/feed/shoot. But I have the luxury of letting DH test her during the morning cycle. We could get all technical here and make a feeding box for his plate that closes itself at +10. Whose our resident engineer? Liz?

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

Hi Serryn. I also had the Cat Mate C20 for Checkers, and had the same problem you mention.
He is used to eating from a flat saucer, and would push the wet food into corners and couldn't get at it well.
I gave it to my DD, whose cat picks up food in chunks, like a dog, and it worked fine for her.

Re: 02/06 Vyktor AMPS 347 +6 277 +10 293 PMPS 252 +2 246 +4

uh oh - i have the one that ella mentioned - the PetSafe! but punkin is such a hoover that he sticks his face in and sucks. so it works for him but i can definitely see how it could be a problem. the compartments are a little deep and triangular shaped. haven't had any trouble with it not opening all the way.
