Nice green! Can you get another test in there? When you start seeing greens you need to know how low he will go and for how long he can hold onto the green. In time you’ll figure out how much to test on green - for now it’s been about 2 hours since right? Can you get another test?

Got it!
(He was snacking on raw pet food at +4 or so), so +5=85.

Ok nice! You’re in an active cycle and green so you want to monitor more. You’re still early in the cycle. He might want to go lower, likely. Right now, he is “flat” which is great. He is surfing and holding onto the green. It would be nice to get a +7, to see if he is still green then. Also I don’t yet know when he NADIRs - if he hits his low late in the cycle, he will be going lower and you will want to watch that.

Also please update title with each test :) helps moderators know if they need to step in and help.

I am surprised he hit green at +3, if he keeps this up are you giving a small meal between shot and +3? Want to help him glide down to green numbers easily.

Thank you for the feedback!

Yes, I gave him extra food after his breakfast and before the +3. I want to make sure I understand what it means to help him glide down to green numbers easily.... I have enjoyed giving him food I know he needs. His little body is feeling so much better and has gained approximately .6# since feeding him A LOT more often than 2X/day as we were prior to the diabetes diagnosis. (We began changing his diet right before his official diagnosis after labs and UA); I did one BG before the labs and got a 411, so knew then.

Basically, you use the food and timing of it strategically when you see him dropping numbers quickly. What I mean is this: right now, Leo is dropping a LOT between the times you are testing him. Today he went from like 250 at PS to 75 at +3 and you didn’t know what happened in between and were probably shocked to see the green +3.

If you are home, it would be really useful to start a +2 reading also because we need to see what he is doing between the tests you’re currently getting when he drops a lot. That will help you know how fast he is dropping and if you’re needing to feed him and when . If a cat drops any more about 50 points in an hour, that’s a fast drop - and fast drops tend to trigger bounces. We want his body to feel happy and stable staying in the blues and greens, not confused and scared by the huge ups and downs.

So we use food to help his body learn that the blues and greens are good numbers and he can stay there.
By the time a kitty has dropped a hundred or two hundred points without the care giver knowing and assisting with some LC food when the drop becomes evident at about 50 point's, it’s likely a bounce reaction may already be triggered.
Does this make sense? If you take a peek at Pearls spreadsheet from early 2021, you will see how I was giving food when she was dropping, to help ease her body down there with food supporting her. That is a really good thing to learn how to do for your cat. It does involve getting some more tests because right now we just see these huge jumps with Leo and we don’t know what is happening in between.

Also, in general when you get a big drop, you need to test again that cycle because you don’t know how low he is going. And also once you start seeing green in a cycle, you need to test again because you need to make sure he is in safe green numbers and not sliding low. In time you will see if Leo has his low numbers at the start middle or end of cycle in general and will have a better grasp on what to expect.

Does this help? Please feel free to ask questions. Every cat is different and has their own journey and combination of what works, but this is some good general rules of the road from my journey :)

If you can put the food details into your spreadsheet it will really help. I just write mine in the boxes where the numbers go helps me personally see patterns so easily. Others write the food details in the comments column on the right.

If I can still use my phone-certainly.
Curious, what is 'CM' food?

CM means Cats Meow beef food by Dave’s. I’ve had to recently change bc they changed an ingredient and it gave her diarrhea. So now we are at R&M, Ranch and Meadow by Essence. All the foods I use are 0% carb bc that is what Pearl can handle.

for most cats it’s good to put LC MC etc or the % of the food you’re giving for your records. Some people give a variety of foods so they put the food name too.

I see Leo is bouncing tonight. He clears them so quickly I bet he will be back down to blue and green in a jiffy. I’d get a before bed number in a couple ish hours and/or when you head to bed so you have an idea of how low he wants to go tonight. He might get back to blue by tomorrow morning if it’s like 2 nights ago.
