Here are photos as promised. REALLY late... Photos of the bowls to demonstrate why it's hard for Grem to eat out of them. The oblong ones belong to the SureFeed machines (which my two civvies are now using), the round is their old bowls and the raised/tilted bowl is Gremlin's bowl. And cuddles with Grem. And Grem in Luna's bed, which he discovered recently and has taken over pretty much full time!

He seems to have been struggling a little the last few days, I wonder if it's because I reduced his Meloxicam dose at the vets advice after tests showed he's moved to stage 2 CKD. Today I gave him 4ml (he weighs 4.8kg currently) and he already seems happier again. I think quality is the way to go at this point. The vet left that decision to me and was happy to go with either option. Does anyone know how much faster the CKD decline could be with the use of Meloxicam? I think it definitely helped in the early stage with his levels improving all the way up until these most recent tests.
 
I have read conflicting evidence about metacam and CRD. Some articles say it is bad for it but more recent articles say it actually helps with CRD.

I think you probably gave him up to the 4 mark on the syringe which is actually 0.4 ml.
That is the correct dose for a Cat his weight.
I was able to reduce Sheba’s dose to half the normal dose over time but you have to make sure they don’t start getting symptoms back when you reduce.
What dose had you reduced to?
 
New evidence says that it is good for those in the early stage of CKD but it can still be harmful later on, I think due to hydration levels.

Apologies, yes, I meant 0.4ml. :facepalm: He was on 0.4ml then was reduced to 0.25ml a week ago. I did increase it to 0.3ml after a few days... The last couple of days he seemed to be struggling with walking on that front leg and became less cuddly so I put his dose back to 0.4ml today.
 
If you are going to reduce the dose you need to do it very slowly over a period of time. I would stay with the 0.4 ml for a couple of weeks and if he seems ok I would reduce it to 0.35ml if that is possible and stay there for 2 weeks. Then try0.3 ml and see how that goes.

Ahhh, okay. A gradual reduction. I will try that instead. As it is, I'm not sure it's really going to effect his longevity.

I've also wondered about Metacam and CKD. My civvie's arthritis isn't particularly responding to Cartrophen and I am tempted to put her back on Metacam but she's CKD Stage II as well.

Grem is only JUST in stage 2 but has been on Meloxicam most of the time he's had CKD. It's been over two years! I think their comfort is more important and Grem can't have Gaba as he reacts to it. Since we introduced Cartrophen (on top of the Meloxicam) he's been so much happier. I tried Bupe for a short time but it didn't make much of a difference at all.
 
My old cat was on it for life too, though he passed just before his 12th birthday. He had a benign tumour in his bladder that was inoperable but caused him to urinate blood which made him borderline anaemic. He was also poisoned by an old neighbour and developed slight brain damage and a heart murmur. He was on Meloxicam and heart meds until the day he passed and was happy until that point. I miss him. He was my soul mate.

Grem's sister, Rufie, never needed any meds. She had breast cancer which moved to her lungs. We said goodbye when her breathing became effected and she had lost a fair bit of weight too. She was happy until then. She was 14.

They had birds and said the rat bait was out for the mice attracted to the bird seed... He almost died. He couldn't get into the birds cage and never upset the birds by climbing on the cage or anything. But they hated him. His body was paralyzed all except his diaphragm and the last three inches of his tail which he banged against the wall repeatedly to wake me up. He was with me another year or two after that happened. Unfortunately there was nothing I could do about the neighbour. I couldn't prove that it was anything other than accidental,even though I knew it wasn't.

Love the photos of Grem! In spite of everything he's been through, he seems so happy, Laura. And I LOVE this raised and tilted food bowl! I really wish the microchipped feeders were built like that. I might start putting mine on dictionaries to prop them up for Ruby and Olive. Hope you are having a wonderful Sunday!:bighug:
