Edited to add link to previous post which, in turn, contains links to the first posts: 9/14 Hester Sue BG 156; Still no spread sheet. General questions

This is our first post in this part of the forum and I am not sure I'm doing the post right.

I hadn't shot since 9/12 AM/1st cycle. Number were creeping up. We shot this evening, 0.5u. and at +2 her numbers have plummeted from 225 to 58.

Is it normal for BG to drop this fast after a shot?

I think I need to set the alarm so I can test again in another hour or two?

Should I decrease dose to .25 for SLGS? We are terribly new at this and I have so many questions.

ECID (Every Cat Is Different) but that IS very big. When are you feeding her relative to shooting?

With her being this low that fast (and her recent event), I would definitely stay up and keep an eye on her. You can find the board guidelines for a hypo event here.

(Adding links to a few past posts for context if our more experienced members come through: here, which has links to other posts)

You can also add the ? mark to the post to let people know that you have a question and need assistance!! Because sometimes these posts are just day to day updates.

She ate some Weruva BFF OMG from the ouch, and some Snappy Tom Chicken in broth, plus the Churu she gets when I test.

I forgot about adding the links to my previous posts, as this is my first once since creating the SS. I can go back and do that. Thanks.

I am not going to get much sleep and I am supposed to be out of here by 8:45 tomorrow morning.

We are so new at this, and she seems really sensitive to the insulin. I plan to call a different vet tomorrow when i get back. I don't know if I can afford to take her in, but Dr Noe at the Chuckanut Valley Feline Center is reputed to be experienced in diabetic cat care. I would like a second opinion about Hester Sue, if I can manage it.

No worries! It's a process!

Oh nooo!! I hope you're able to get some good rest.

Oh, that would be nice if there was a vet nearby that was experienced and knowledgeable specifically in diabetic care. I hope you're able to manage it.

I just tested again at 3.75 and got 59 @3.75. So not currently dropping more. I am going to try to sleep and wake up and retest in a couple of hours. She sleeps with me, so I hope i would notice anything drastic.

I do have HC FF cans, plus the honey I used on the 6th.

Hi Morna, if you give insulin you will definitely reduce her shot to at the most 0.25 units (we reduce by .25 units) since she’s gone under 90 and since you are following SLGS.
Your instinct is correct to reduce the dose immediately at your next shot time.
She does seem to need very little insulin.

Please get an AMPS (a preshot test) to make sure she’s high enough to actually give a shot.

If she’s not high enough, please post here for help and stall without feeding her to see if she comes up. You could test again in 30 minutes to see if she’s rising.

Please keep asking questions, and post every day so you can get lots of help and guidance 🥰

Hi Stacy,
Her BG numbers did come up; 184 at +7 and now 226 for AMPS. I am going to try to draw .25 and give her that once she's done eating in a few minutes here.

It's nerve wracking. since I need to leave for 4 or 5 hours not long after the morning shot.

Welcome. I’m going to see if I can find your posts beginning with your intro. I do have two cats that eat different foods and I feed them separately as one has allergies so can’t eat what her sister eats. I actually started making their food as they were eating raw and bird flu scared me. So now I cook their food and add a supplement.

Good luck with the reduction. It would be great if a food change is all that is needed and kitty becomes diet controlled but too soon to tell.

Thanks. Her numbers were good when I got back today; 85 at +6.

I do not think i have it in me to make them different diets. If i feed raw, it will be human grade food, but Sibyl has been vomiting more with raw, even her favorite. We (the cats and I) are slowly figuring it out. Maybe.

I’m curious. Was a fructosamine run at diagnosis? What were you feeding? I get it about different foods I have no choice as one cat will eat anything but she’s getting bison and the other won’t eat bison.

I am thinking her vet said Hester Sue's frictosamine was 595. But she had just come off a serious UTI and has a history of tooth and gum problems -- the only one of the 3 who does.

For at least the last decade they have been free fed Taste of the Wild kibble, with treats of raw venison, dried bonito, and bits of whatever i as eating, as long as there was no onion or garlic in it. Sibyl got her CKD diagosis just before Hester Sue got her FD diagnosis. (I was actually expecting worse CKD in Hester Sue, but she's only stage I). We tried the prescription wet foods, which they pretty much hated. Now we are going through the list of foods for both CKD and FD. They hate a lot of it. This week, the Weruva BFF OMG packets, with Fortiflora sprinkled on top, and the Snappy Tom's chicken in broth with PORUS are being eaten. In previous posts I have described other feeding attempts.

I am trying to figure what will work best for us. A lot of what is suggested here is well-meaning but beyond me for various reasons, and I am having to navigate that, and not respond to every suggestion with "yes, but." and just move on if it's something I just can't do. But also there is the fear that my failings and inabilities will harm or kill my cats. They have lived 17 years and most of it has been exceptionally good for them. They were born feral, scooped quite young, and got a life with wood stoves and fresh venison and lots of love and attention. We became homeless in 2022 in the midst of the ongoing housing crisis and housing is still not stable. They do not get to be indoor/outdoor cats in our new location, and they are mostly adapting to that. We all deal with our own circumstances. Mine may be more peculiar than most, and a lot of what people accept as normal has not been part of my life. No smart phone, limited wifi, and now no income and fast-dwindling savings. I spent money I had put aside for my own medical expenses on vet bills these past 2 months. Today I made an appointment for both cats with a vet farther north who is reputed to have more experience with diabetic cats, and geriatric cats in general. I am hoping my boat sells so i can afford more vet bills, and syringes, test strips, pricey foods, supplements,,etc. The vet who called with the diagnosis said that euthanasia was a valid option. I was not comforted by this idea. I am trying to let my girls have the best quality lives for as long as they can. As we all do.

TL:DR Circumstances vary. Please be gentle in accepting that sometimes I am not able to do as you suggest. Even the stuff that is crucial.

I will be making more posts with questions about some basic stuff. I will be reading the sticky posts and other people's charts to try to get a better understanding. But I am very tired and just not doing well. Go easy, please. This is not directed to the person whom I am responding to, but to all the generous helpers on this forum.

It sounds like you’re doing your absolute best by your kitties under extremely challenging circumstances. You sound like a very loving and dedicated caregiver, and I hope that things get easier for you and the kitties.
