After a couple days after loosing Merlin I try to get Regs back on track.
Regs numbers are dropping early today. In the last couple days he always dropped right before the next insulin dose, so I wonder do I give him the Lantus wrong or is that just how Regs is? Is that a bit steep today or in the expected range? Maybe with everything happened I'm just freaking out way too early.

Normally we would have had a vet appointment today but the vet and the vettech got bitten by an unvaccinated cat before our appointment so we had to reschedule. What a bummer because I wanted to hear what we do with Regs and his insulin dose in 2 weeks when we are on vacation for a couple days, if the weight gain is just a fat kitty belly and no fluids and if his bloods look fine.

For us, at least, Moonie’s numbers drop very early unless it’s an inactive cycle or she’s breaking a bounce (at which point her nadir comes at the very end). And while Regs’ drop is a big one indicating an active cycle, I’ve seen a lot of cycles that look like this on this site and in Moonie if it helps you feel better

For us, at least, Moonie’s numbers drop very early unless it’s an inactive cycle or she’s breaking a bounce (at which point her nadir comes at the very end). And while Regs’ drop is a big one indicating an active cycle, I’ve seen a lot of cycles that look like this on this site and in Moonie if it helps you feel better

Regs had such a pretty cycle today and I was so happy because he was feeling good and was active. But his liver got spooked, he is bouncing and back in the 400th
I just don't understand his cycles thats why I want to talk to the vet and get him a Libre. maybe getting a bit more information about his drops and how we can make him survive being away for 5 days and cycles like that make me very uneasy about the trip.
Out sitter thankfully is a vettech but she only comes twice a day, before and after work, I wonder if I want to get him a cooled feeder for this time, that he can have a bit food in between the two main meals.

Some cats are predictable, some not. I used to joke that Neko's nadirs on Lantus were reliably somewhere between +3.5 and +13. The earlier the nadir, the more likely she was thinking about a reduction, at least if the PS was lower and the moon was in a certain phase. Just joking about the moon. Neko's typical nadir was +7 to +9, later if breaking a bounce.

You will find that as Reg gets closer to a dose that gives him those high greens you want with SLGS, his patterns will become more predictable. Right now he's bouncing more too. Numbers just wobble around during a bounce.

As far as trips away go, just look at what nadirs he's getting on his current dose. He doesn't seem to be getting into the below 100 range where you have to worry. 2.5 units is an easy dose for a petsitter to draw - just make sure you have a sample syringe with coloured liquid (tea, pop, juice) so PS has something to refer to. Post here a couple days before you leave and ask about the petsitter dose. We can help you decide if it's good or needs to go down while you are away. A Libre will definitely help you feel better if the petsitter cannot test. Or not able to test as much as you do. We suggest vacation doses based on what testing is done too.

Speaking as someone who was super anxious about leaving Moonie for a week long vacation, it was SO helpful to ask here for advice on vacation dosing before I left. And believe it or not, all of our sitters read our crazy 14 page manual and we had 3 senior cats who needed medication (Moonie being one of them). So hopefully your vacation will turn out smoothly too! I’m also happy to send you a redacted version of our manual for the sitters if it’s helpful to see.

Thanks so much Wendy. I guess Regs nadirs are somewhere between 3.5 and 13 as well I love all the blue numbers especially because you can see how good he feels but I really hate that I can't predict anything when and how fast he drops and that concerns me a lot.
Today his pre was good and he shot right back up to 400, I'm sure that is still from the lower numbers yesterday.

The idea with the colorful liquid in the syringe is a great, need to do that, but I was wondering because sometimes I have to give him night snacks and late afternoon snacks if I should either reduce the dose for a couple of days or get him a feeder that will give him his lunch and some snack. But I will monitor his numbers better this week and ask for help next weekend- really love all the knowledge here in this group.

It's too bad that the vet had to reschedule our appointment to Friday but of course if they have a rabies scare that has absolute priority. Maybe I find a way to link the libre in the time we are gone to my iPad and get the numbers to my phone, have to think about that.

That would be great Connie, I am so scared that I would forget something on the instructions that are completely normal for us but maybe not for the sitter. I have to completely rewrite the ones I have, since we gave now one cat less

I am super nervous but I'm glad it's just from Monday to Saturday and I have a camera where I can put a couple treats or dry food in in case Regs seems off. If my husband would not push me I would not go but we have concert tickets in Los Angeles and want to go to Disney Land.

I’ll send it to you when we’re back on Tuesday! It’s not perfect but we did dry runs with our sitters using this version where we left these instructions and had them do the testing, feeding etc in front of us before our trip without us giving additional instructions.

Honestly I wouldn’t have gone to Ireland if it wasn’t for Parker but it was an important family event and we agreed that this would be our last days long trip without Moonie.

And I’m sure your trip will go great! I was so paranoid but everything ended up being just fine
