Cheech - newly on Lantus

What I keep telling myself. We need to put on our patience pants and give the insulin time to work. That is all the advice that I have though, since I am still somewhat of a newbie.
 
Welcome. Have you had an opportunity to read our thread on dosing methods? How often you increase depends on which one you choose if you follow ours. The initial depot takes 5-7 days to build. So you would not change the dose fur that long. Lantus dosing is based upon how low a dose takes your cat. So you need some tests around +5-7 to figure that out. If you can get a second test each cycle between those tones I would vary when you do that. The stickies at the top of the forum explain all of this. Keep asking questions and someone is almost always around for help. I’d read the dosing sticky first.
 
Thank you! Yes I have read, it seems like our vet is leaning on start slow go slow — we switched to Lantus after being on Vetsulin for a while.

Hello and welcome.

Did you skip insulin this morning and yesterday morning? If you miss a shot, put either NS (no shot) or Skip in the units cell for that cycle. Since Lantus is a depot style insulin, where one shot builds on the previous ones, it's important for us to know if you didn't give the shot or just forgot to enter the value in the Units cell.

Hello! Thank you for the reminder, we have not skipped shots! I just updated.

We were unable to get a reading on her yesterday and today AM, she did still get her shot and I did test her +6 today (and yesterday).

My husband normally does the AMPS reading and since he was unable to get a reading, I did not update the cell for the units given. I will make sure to keep it updated moving forward, thank you!

Hi, and welcome!

In terms of numbers, every cat is different, but it can take a bit of time (and finding the right dose) for Lantus to start bringing down numbers. It's a much gentler insulin than Vetsulin, though, so the results are going to likely look different. Take a look at some of the spreadsheets of folks on the Lantus forum (look at Jude's numbers at the end of '24 and beginning of '25 when he came out of remission), and you'll get an idea of how things went for them at the beginning. But, again, every cat is different, so you're going to see some wide variations.

When posting on the Lantus forum, we like for people to post their previous post each day that they post so that we can get a sense of continuity and history with what's transpired with their kitty. I see you've posted quite a few times on the Main Forum, so I went ahead and cobbled those together below so that on a go-forward basis when you post, there will be a convenient link to previous posts.

You’ve got to ask questions- that’s what everyone is here for- to give Cheech her best chance of remission.
This forum literally saved my baby Arya’s life. The vet almost killed her.
Pls ask as many questions as you like… it’s the only way we learn quickly about something we have never dealt with before.
