2/4 Owl AMPS 119, +4 65 - dosing advice

I am not sure how to interpret Owl's numbers over the last few days since we dropped him down to .1unit. We saw fewer greens and a much higher blue and just when I was beginning to wonder if this might be a failed reduction, he decides to throw out a 65 at +4 today.

Should we continue to see how he does on the .1unit? Should I stop mixing in a med-carb food and only feed 3% carbs to see if that knocks down the blues? Bump him back up to .25unit?

It is possible that our dosing is a little inconsistent, with having to eyeball a .1unit dose. I did confirm with my husband (who gives most of Owl's shots at the moment) that we are both measuring the .1 the same way, with the plunger just a hair's breadth beneath the 0 line.

Advice appreciated. Hope everyone and their kitties are having a safe day today!

Hi Amy,

A few things: first, the most important. Looking back, it looks like you shot your first green on 1/31, right? But I'm not seeing that you were awarded your BOS award?!? Maybe I've missed it. Just in case, let me give your award. They are coveted here on the board because it's a true BOS moment when we shoot a green, and we want to acknowledge your bravery!! Congratulations!!!

Second, in going back through your previous posts, some of the links aren't working correctly (broken). I'm not sure what is causing this, if it's operator error or something glitchy with the board, but let's make sure you're posting them correctly. Are you going to the little chain link in the menu line, pasting the previous day's URL (copying the line from the search bar) into the URL box + giving it a title? I see the title, but when I click it, the link is broken. And I believe I noticed this on a couple of them. If you're doing this, correctly, then (again) it could be something with the board OR (and I've had this happen before) something with my view of things.

Third, I'm curious: what was the reason for the dose reduction on 1/30? AND I'm not sure if you're seeing a failed reduction either. I'll bump you up and tag @Bandit's Mom to see what she thinks. I believe you're not using the Libre any longer, right? So, you're not getting that full-range of numbers, but I'm seeing some lower nadirs, and the blues are not as high as they were prior to the reduction AND you're not seeing any lemons or stinky pinkies.

What times of the cycle are you feeding and are they all a mix of medium carb with low carb? I'd definitely make sure any snacks in the last half of the cycle are just low carb.

Congratulations on your BOS Amy! 👍
Glad Owl is doing well and I hope the snacks make a difference in Owl’s numbers.
Have a safe surf 🌊🐈‍⬛🏄‍♂️

LOL thank you Mary, that is quite the reward! Regarding the links, that is exactly how I'm creating them, and they work when I click on them. I don't know why they might appear broken to you.

The reduction came because the vet found Owl to be hypoglycemic at his most recent vet visit. They did bloodwork and it came back showing 55mg/dL. I admit I am a little confused as to whether or not that 55 on official lab work is different than a 55 on my human meter. I assume it is, and therefore why it was flagged as hypo. The vet wanted me to only give Owl his Lantus in the mornings and skip his evening dose, but that didn't sit well with me so I opted to reduce the dose and continue to give it 2x a day, with the reasoning that if he experienced a true hypo on labwork, he had earned the reduction anyway.

He gets 8% carbs at shot time and at +1 and +2. He gets 3% carbs at lunch time at +6 and at +9 (but not during his PM cycle, only during the day.)

It might be interesting to try lowering the carbs of just his shot time food. You want to try to slow the drop when he onsets, but that doesn't happen until after +1. Eventually you could reduce all the carbs, but try one at a time first.

I'll give this a shot, thank you!
