Blah blah blah, lots of flat pinks today. Last night I woke up and caught a 184ish and since it slightly resembled our last green cycle I gave him a single tsp of 12% mixed in with his overnight snack. Unfortunately despite not normally seeming to be carb sensitive at all, that sent him skyrocketing 100 points.

Feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, but it really is crazy how one dose can send him lime and now the highest dose he's ever had and he's hanging out in the high pinks. Once again throwing it out there that this vial of Lantus is the same one we've been using since we switched to it (so a couple months?) but it's not cloudy and has always been taken care of. Not sure if maybe it's losing efficacy or if he's just suddenly really hard to budge out of the pinks.

It's so frustrating when they just won't budge!
As you probably know I had the same 'is he in an insulin resistant/glucose toxicity vicious circle' or 'am I giving him stale insulin' uncertainty myself a few weeks back.
In my case I think it may have been the insulin - no proof, just a gut feeling. My pen was two months old.
If I could go back in time I would swop to fresh insulin sooner.

As you probably know I had the same 'is he in an insulin resistant/glucose toxicity vicious circle' or 'am I giving him stale insulin' uncertainty myself a few weeks back.

It's so frustrating! I wish there there were concrete answers for, like, literally anything.

Thank you for your thoughts about swapping! Maybe I'll do that. I don't know. If it is that, I'd be afraid what would happen if I gave the same dose with a new vial.

It could also be the fact that this bag of needles has all been off. I've been doing my best to adjust for it, not just winging it, so I don't think it could be that far off. But it's still annoying. Considering getting calipers and a lit magnifying glass etc but not sure when I can manage that. Not that it's not worth it, it just gets really expensive to keep buying new things.

You may want to switch to pens instead of a vial. That way if you’re really concerned, you’re not losing so much to abandon a vial. (Plus I’m always afraid to drop a vial and then I’d be up a creek).
And I hope you’re getting the insulin for $35 with coupons, etc.

And of course it can be NDW (new dose wonkiness). Or, you just haven’t gotten to a good dose quite yet.
I am a convert to the calipers school of dosing. Love them and feel my doses have to be more accurate.
Of course, it’s all a lot to spend and priorities….

We are getting it for $35! Or at least, we did the one time we got Lantus (this is our first vial). That's an idea I'll keep in mind! With how long it's lasted I'm not too worried about losing what's left of the vial (assuming it doesn't start happening quickly like Libres do lol but I don't see that happening).

Yes, I probably need to shop around. I was in a hurry to get the prescription filled, so I didn't go to another pharmacy to check.

My first Libre I got at Costco for about $35. The second one I picked up at a different pharmacy that was less crowded and more convenient, and they charged me about $100 for the exact same thing. Back to Costco I went for the next one lol

Brianna, I was questioning Butch's insulin too. The vial I was using was from November (it wasn't cloudy, and it was taken care of too). I decided to start a new vial last night to play it safe. I got it at my pharmacy (Walgreens) with RX discount, the cost $35.00

I hope Xander gets out of the terrible pinks! Wishing you both a calm and restful night. Safe surfing, Xander!

Brianna, I was questioning Butch's insulin too. The vial I was using was from November (it wasn't cloudy, and it was taken care of too). I decided to start a new vial last night to play it safe. I got it at my pharmacy (Walgreens) with RX discount, the cost $35.00

I hope the new vial fixes the problem for you and poor Butch too! Boy it'd be nice if that were the whole reason we're both stuck in these crappy numbers!

@Staci & Ivy - If I do pick up a new vial of Lantus, do I need to do anything with the dosage? If the reason I'm not seeing any good numbers is actually the insulin itself and not the dose being too low, is it risky? And do you think I should wait out the full 6 cycles on this dose before trying the new vial?

Now that I think about it I probably wouldn't be able to try it until after the 6th cycle anyway because I won't even be able to pick it up until tomorrow sometime at the earliest.

I think it's a good choice to get a new vial, I just did the same thing last week, just in case and walmart kept telling me it was time haha.

I would think Xander's numbers are still going down, so there is some efficacy left, so I wouldn't think you need to worry about him going immediately too low with the new vial. I think there will be gradual signs if it's too much cause the old vial was past it's prime.

Thank you, Laurie! I appreciate the input. It makes sense that it may not be as drastic a drop as it could be since the vial is already fairly old. I'll probably put a "?" in today's post just to make sure I'm not missing anything big since this'll be the first time for me.

He does seem to at least have a very slight dip in the cycles, so you're right that something is happening. Just... barely. I really hope the new vial fixes it and that was the problem rather than that he's getting worse.
