Yesterday's thread

Hey everyone,

As soon as things start looking up, something else goes wrong. Sigh. Libre 3 sensor loss since about +1.75. Haven't been able to get it back so far. It's only on day 8, but this tech seemed to have trouble putting it on so maybe she messed it up badly enough that it failed early.

(For reference, I have the Libre 3 because getting manual readings out of him is basically impossible. Only managed to make it work once and it was a 2 man job with a whole bunch of jabs and tears.)

So I can't get any manual readings unless my partner's around, which is basically just the PMPS and maybe +1. I was just about to set up the appointment to get the next one placed (placing them ourselves is something Xander would never let us do either, but the vet only charges $17 to do it for us. It does require traveling half an hour to another city for it though.)

Anyway... wish us luck at either getting the stupid thing working again or being able to manually test occasionally until we can get a new one placed... Assuming the next one doesn't just fail early too. Unfortunately it sounds like the early failures come in batches and naturally this time we got a pack of 6, all the same batch.

So much for getting to closely track how he reacts to food, etc. :(

So sorry you are having trouble with your Libre and with the manual tests. There are so many new stresses early on it is overwhelming. It does get better, I promise.

Tagging @Staci & Ivy as she has been using Libres for her Ivy for a long time and may be able to give you some advice.

Sorry if someone has already linked this to you, but here is good info on manual testing:

I’m lucky because Bell is usually pretty easy going about the pokes, I’m sorry it is hard with Xander. I think it is worth keeping trying with the manual testing even if it is just for a backup to your Libre for peace of mind. Folks here can help you with some strategies to make it easier on you

HI Brianna,
First of all....save the Libre and always save the packaging. IF they fail you can call Abbott and ask for a replacement (But NEVER tell them it's for a cat. Say it's your son or something.)
They will ask for the Sensor # on the package and it's stored in your history of either your phone or reader which you use to scan the sensor.

Ok, the sensor will tell you if it's done working or not. It will say Sensor ended, Start a new sensor (something like that).

Try these tricks: (and check the Freestyle Libre for Dogs and Cats Facebook page for lots of tips and tricks)
If it's just not reading....restart your phone/reader which "reads" the sensor (are you are using a phone or a reader??)
Is the reader/phone within 33 feet of him?
Restart the Libre 3 app.
Turn your phone off and do a manual a restart.
Turn bluetooth off and on...

It COULD be that if the tech applied the sensor with glue, that can cause it to fail. (don't use glue!!)
If there's any way you can learn to install the Libre yourself I highly advise that. Maybe one of you can hold him and one can do the install.
I NEVER thought I could do it myself with Ivy, but I do it solo every time (even at 2 am when they fail sometimes!)

It's far better to do it at home instead of the stress of driving 30 minutes each way to get it done, if possible.

I hope the sensor comes back for you.
You can always call Abbott and ask them to trouble shoot with you (they kind of suck, but sometimes they can help if you get a decent person on the phone).

Wishing you lots of luck!!!Let me know if you have more questions.

Oops! Usually I remember to do that, but I must've been too distracted by the sudden Libre failure. Sorry! Will add it to the OP too.

Yeah, it hasn't been so fun lol Thanks. It did take a while, but injections themselves finally became the easier part of all of this (when it was the hardest at first), so I'm hoping that will apply to the rest too.

I think I've read and reread everything I can possibly find about manual testing 10 times at this point, but I still appreciate the link! I keep all of it bookmarked and look back often too. I definitely have at least (tried) testing to verify a Libre number, so I'd still do that. Unfortunately it seems to be more a matter of what he'll tolerate than technique, but again, the injections got easier eventually, so... Fingers crossed.

Hi Staci! Thank you so much for this detailed response!

Fortunately I had the foresight to keep all of the packaging, so yay for that.

Ok, the sensor will tell you if it's done working or not. It will say Sensor ended, Start a new sensor (something like that).

As of about 9:45 it's just consistently said "Signal Loss" with no change. I have looked in the Event Log under help which has a bunch of "57" codes, but my extensive searching didn't find a conclusive answer for what that might be. Some people said it's the "starting up" code, but that wouldn't make much sense since it was applied last week.

Always appreciate specific troubleshooting instructions, so thank you so much! I'm using a phone. I have tried all of those (as well as force stopping the app), and it's definitely within 33 feet of him. Unfortunately nothing's worked so far. :( Some people on reddit said that theirs suddenly came back online after 11-12 hours, so we'll see if that happens.

It COULD be that if the tech applied the sensor with glue, that can cause it to fail. (don't use glue!!)

The vet definitely uses glue and like I said, it seemed like this vet tech didn't do a very good job, so maybe that's why.

After I posted this I went back to that Libre for Pets document to reread the sections about application and it does look really easy. My partner agreed that we should try it. It would certainly be nice not to have to take a couple hours out of a day and stressing poor Xander out even more to go have it done for us, like you said!

You can always call Abbott and ask them to trouble shoot with you (they kind of suck, but sometimes they can help if you get a decent person on the phone).

I had heard that they'll also just replace it if it fails (and that that can also be requested online), so I'm going to try that assuming it doesn't come back online tonight.

Wishing you lots of luck!!!Let me know if you have more questions.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I will probably be back with them once we have to do it lol Would you be okay with my tagging you if that's the case? The document I referred to has a bunch of links to videos but unfortunately they're all on Facebook (and I don't have or want one). Might have to make an account just for that. Wish they were just on YouTube! :arghh:[/QUOTE]

Yes feel free to tag me if needed. Or send me a direct email too.

Maybe just make a “dummy” Facebook account (use Xander’s name, lol)
The page on Facebook is where I learned everything I needed.
I started using a Libre before I even ended up here and when I came here, practically no one was using a Libre so there was really no one to guide me or help me out.
But I point everyone to that Facebook page because they have so much information gathered in one place

If there’s anyway that you two think you could manage to put one on him, that’s your best bet. Because they definitely fail at the weirdest times I promise you you wouldn’t believe some of the middle of the night times I was shaving a spot on Ivy and applying a sensor at some ungodly time of the middle of the night, practically crying by myself while the rest of household was sleeping.

It’s really not as hard as they might think to put them on. Once you do it one or two times I think you’ll find it not so bad but you definitely don’t want to use glue and I know that that offices seem to think they were supposed to use glue I don’t know where they learned that but it absolutely will destroy the sensor.
Let’s hope yours comes back and starts working again. It’s possible, but you may at some point just get a message that it’s failed and then at least you’ll know but we’ll keep our fingers crossed that it comes back for you.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I planned on lol Hopefully I'll still be allowed in the group if it's an otherwise inactive account (I know some places don't like that).

We're absolutely planning to try! I think we're ordering some supplies today (as listed in that document) so whenever they show up, hopefully in the next day or two.

Yeah, it seems like maybe that was the problem. We won't use any.
