Happy New Year everyone.
We are starting it out with another bounce :(
Happy New Year. :)
I wonder if Kai will still show you all the new year’s fireworks colors …. He can go from black to green in same day based on history. Reminds me of my reaction to Jude’s sheet and speculating to Marielle if there is such a thing as pancreas turning on and off, to which she told me her vet calls it “sputtering pancreas”. I also wonder if the lantus depot could behave differently in different cats. I’m totally making this up as I have no idea. But it sure seems like cats that have more pronounced swings must have something different going on than cats that are flatter or have a form of bell curve. I’m going to go see if i can find anything about variance in lantus depot behavior. Very curious.

Hoping Kai has a nice downward trend today. :cat:

I wish i could just tell his pancreas to get a clue lol!

I just hate it when he bounces up this high. When he does he is not interested in his food at shot time. He will eat just enough for a shot but not all of it. But then at +4 he is starving. But this is only when he is running this high. Let me know if you find anything.

I did some searching and found a couple of good threads about sputtering pancreas and/vs bouncing. Links below.

Keep in mind Maddie that I am not qualified at all as an advisor, merely a fellow kitty lover with a curious mind and wishing I could save the entire kitty world.

After reading these threads and looking again at Kai’s sheet and his recent numbers going back to early Dec when you started 1.25 … I see that other than the one black reading at amps of 3rd cycle on 1.25, he never had a black OR a green. Then, the fifth cycle after going from 1.5 to 1.75 he got a green, followed by a black the next cycle. Then a few cycles later another green, followed by a black. And again. Is there a repeating green followed by black pattern emerging and is this bouncing and if so will it possibly start to level ? Again, just me observing the data and asking questions. :)

Kai is bouncing. Whenever I see an unusual high number, I go back a cycle or two and see what might have caused it. It could be bounces, fur shots, delayed shots, changes in dose, absorption, etc. The second half of this Sticky has a good explanation:
What is the Insulin Depot?

I found that bounces caused by fast drops would often cause worse bounces than those caused by going low. Let's look at 12/24. He went from 310 to 112 4 hours later. We don't know how fast he dropped each hour but if you look at cycles where you've gotten a +1, he typically goes up from PS to +1 because of food. Meaning that 200 point drop on the 24th was more likely across 2 or 3 hours. That's a lot. Probably enough to cause a bounce and he was in the blacks that night cycle. Plus it was his first green in who knows how long, so a double whammy bounce. You can't do anything about his reaction to greens, and you want him to see green. What you can do is try to make sure any fast drops are more gentle drops. You do that by finding out when his does his biggest drops, and feeding some food 1/2 hour or so before hand, so he has fresh carbs on board to slow the drop.

The good news with all this bouncing is that he's clearing those bounces fairly quickly, which is a good sign. The down side to clearing bounces is that you can get some downward momentum pushing down numbers, and leading to those fast drops again. So when you see a bounce breaking cycle might happen, that's when you can use food to help manipulate the curve.

This is very good to know. Understand ecid of course but I never thought to consider this nuance so now I’m going to look for this possibly w/ Minner. I often get bent out of shape at what seems a fast drop (to me, altho i dont think i’ve seen 50/hr like what kai may have seen). And now I think some of these drops are when minner started a cycle high, ate early in cycle but none 2nd half and then starts accelerating down in 2nd half. So maybe a small snack is needed. Anywho, lots of good nuggets of knowledge there …. Thank you. Did not mean to hijack Kai’s thread here and comment on Minner, i’m just relating! :)

This makes a little be more more sense to me now. I'm having a hard time seeing and understanding the patterns and determining when those bounce breaking cycles might happen. We are just rinsing and repeating because i'm not catching on fast enough?

I think he's going to bounce anyway due to the greens he's not used to. But if you can slow down fast drops (which are only part of the story), then maybe he won't bounce quite as high. I see he dropped 300 points in 3 hours again today.. Yay for blues, but....

I know :arghh: i was happy to see that blue today but dang that was still a big drop even with snacks in between. And when he jumps up this high he losses interest in his food around shot time. I guess i need to be more patient. Maybe if we continue to see more greens on this dose his body will get a clue and start to chill out o_O... maybe?

Another dramatic drop at +4

Good night everyone!
