Good morning,

second cycle on 2 IU and last cycle with Chloramphenicol. I gave it with her shot in the morning and we are finished now. Such a relief!

Last night she was coming down a bit more with this extra drop of insulin. We saw some yellow numbers again. Today we started in pink but now we are hanging in red numbers at +4 still. :( This afternoon I will check her ketones again. Hopefully they didn't rise.

Wendys remark with the possible sugar in the antibiotics was an eye opener. I looked at the spreadsheet again and it made perfectly sense, that the sugar was shooting her up. Especially after the evening dose at +4 - where she usually would go down - I could see her going up. I'm sure that doesn't explain her high numbers completely but maybe part of it.

I hope we can reverse it soon. I will also see if I can bit by bit reduce the carbs in her food again to < 6 % and feed 10 % or higher only when I have to leave the house.

On Wedenesday I have to be out of the house from shot time to shot time which I hate to do. Fortunately my neighbor is here again and has time to look after Binie. I hope the next two days are enough to see, where 2 IU without the antibiotic sugarbomb take Binie. I don't want my neighbor to run into problems.

My biggest wish is, that we are finally coming out of this constant state of health crisis and I can concentrate on regulating her diabetes. Strange enough: After the wounds on her breast healed well, she started to lick her breast again yesterday. Sometimes I just want to scream. Fortunately we know now, that Procaine injections can help. I just wonder, why this is always coming back again.

I hope everyone has a relaxed Sunday! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Good morning, Heike, I’m so glad that you’re at the end of the antibiotic and hoping that your understanding of the Sugar bombs may explain some of the very high BG. Hoping that will go down now and that Binie will be recovered. We are keeping our fingers and paws crossed:bighug:

I wonder why Binie is licking again?? I can certainly understand your frustration and wanting to scream:(
You’re doing such a great job of juggling so many different variables. I’m glad your neighbor will be able to help you this week on the day you need to be out of the house. That should bring you a bit of relief while you are out.

Luckily it’s only now and then that you need to be away and mostly you can be home to take care of Binie.
I hope her numbers continue to come down and ketones stay in the negative range.
Wishing you a calm, boring and peaceful day Heike and Binie :bighug::kiss::bighug:

Hi Staci,

thank you so much for your kind and sweet support! :bighug::bighug::bighug: I hope your night was better than the last, curious to read your update.

I don't really know why she is licking again. I understood that the allergical reaction can take longer and that the procaine may helped to calm the nerves. I am just surprised it started again after it was calm for many weeks now. Seems my vet expected something like that because she told me last time that if it starts again, we can repeat giving the procaine. Yesterday I managed to take a closer look on her breast by dividing the fur while Binie was distracted with a Churru. It looked all perfectly fine and healed but she is working very hard to change that. I think I will wait another day or two and then decide what to do. Hopefully it stopps again.

Unfortunately her bg stays sky high today. I wonder if she is bouncing from the yellow numbers last night? Seems like we took a hugh step back in her fd journey. But what is positive, I just measured her ketones and they didn't go further up compared to yesterday.

We have a nice Sunday today with a bit of sunshine and mild temperatures. As Binie started to lie on the cold tiles on the terrace, I brought her cat bed outside again and she enjoys the autumn sun under a blanket. The last days she only went out for 5-10 minutes for short security checks due to the temperatures and rain but I am happy, she can enjoy her favourite place today.

Hope you and Ivy have a relaxed and peaceful Sunday! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am glad you are done with the antibiotic, I hope she is all good now.
Is she stressed? Bella tends to lick her fur a lot when she is stressed, she even licked all the fur from her belly several times. I think it was a mix of stress and allergies,. it happened in the spring/summer, a few years in a row. she did not do it again since I started giving her Zyrtec in the spring.
Maybe Binnie's wound has trouble healing because her blood sugar is high, like what can happen with diabetic humans? Or she is just licking because you react to that ;) sometimes I wonder if they do this kind of thing.
I hope you have a great sunday!

To show you what she did, that was in 2020 when the kids were home all the time. She was fat, then!

Her belly is usually fluffy white hair. Not now, it's growing back from being shaven at the hospital a few weeks ago.

Hi Cecile,

yes, I have been speculating about all this with my vet too. My vet thinks the main reason is still the allergic reaction to the threads but she also mentioned that diabetes makes the skin more itchy. I think it could also be a stress response. Since Binie is sick she had to go through many stressful situations and I think she can feel my own constant stress and worry about her health situation.

Ohhhh...poor Bella licked her belly naked! Good to know that she is so much better now. Yes, our kittys are sensitive.

Hope you have a great Sunday with you daughter and the whole family! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Heike, maybe she is bouncing from those yellows. Let’s hope the increase helps bring down the bg and it could take a few cycles until that happens.

We never know when she may react to the higher dose.
So glad ketones are fine and she got outside on her favorite terrace and enjoyed some outdoor time today.
It’s funny the way you describe how she surveys things, like she’s the security officer on the terrace checking out the neighborhood:joyful:

Good job distracting her with the Churu so you could examine her wound area. Let’s hope she doesn’t start really causing damage again there.

Since Ivy was high today, I actually ran a few errands and was out of the house for a few hours. That’s rare for me to be able to do that so I took advantage and I watched her on the Libre app to make sure everything was OK at home. So since I came back, I picked her up out of her bed in her room and brought her upstairs to my bedroom to give her a change of scenery.
She always complains when I do that, but then she settles nicely into her favorite pink chair and goes back for another nap :p

Wishing Binie a calm and healing night and a calm, mellow night for you :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I hope Binie is soon well, with good numbers and you with good rest. It could be her nerves were damaged with the initial injury or the surgery and just don’t feel right as they heal. I hope it’s not there’s something else in there. Humans, especially diabetic ones, are prone to skin and nerve problems.

when Methos was a shelter cat he licked many spots raw, some because he got fleas in the shelter and had a reaction to the bites, but a lot of it was stress because he’s about the size of a Maine coon and was put in the smallest cage they had —he couldn’t stand fully and was longer in every direction so had to sit all hunched over and twisted.

Hi Colleen,

oh my, Methos was so lucky you found him! I hope he is well, he had a nice stretch of blue yesterday!:cool::cool:

Yes, I also hope there is nothing else inside... After the surgery they didn't find anything cancerous in the samples. I did another check tonight and she has some hard tissue under her arm. I remember my vet found something like that too but said it might be scartissue from the surgery. If she is still licking tomorrow I will make another vet appointment. If it is a problem with the nerves, maybe the procaine helps.

I am very worried, her bg is not going down. She is feeling crappy and I hope there is not something else brewing.

I will go to bed now. As her bg is that high I have to discipline myself and try to sleep. I really need it.

Hope you have a relaxed day! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am very sorry, Heike. These compounding issues are extremely taxing to try to deal with. FD is enough by itself! I hope tomorrow is a better day.

Oh poor Methos, that’s so sad he was not treated so well before it’s so wonderful he is now with you, Colleen :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Well I can’t be too critical of the shelter, it was a city shelter understaffed, underpaid, swamped with unwanted animals. Cats got put in whatever cage was available and it would cost extra $ in supplies and manpower to swap them if a more suitable cage came open. It broke my heart though, especially with “abner” (his shelter name). We volunteers could take a cat out to the “meet and greet” room when shelter was closed to let them play/socialize for 10 minutes (then return pet, sanitize room, take a new cat, etc). I’d open the cat carrier (also small for him) and he’d walk out but instead of spending those precious minutes of freedom running and being free he’d throw himself to the ground in front of me, stretch out his arms and legs and beg for belly rubs. I tried so hard to get him adopted—I volunteered daily and would always walk clients past his cage saying what a great cat he was but his cage was o the bottom, so they couldn’t really see how gorgeous he was and since the cage was small he looked even bigger than he already was—he’d reach a paw out —he’s a polydactyl and has huge paws with lots of fluffy fur between the toes—when he spreads his toes his paw covers my palm. So people saw a huge cat with ginormous paws and passed. :(
Their loss, my gain. When he ended up on potential rainbow room list he came home with me.

Oh that just breaks my heart. I’m so glad he’s yours and you are his person. he’s such a beautiful, sweet boy ❤️❤️❤️
He was meant to be in your life as you saved his life.
Thank you so much for all you do.
Wishing you all the best in your m journey with Methos @SmallestSparrow
