Cooper - Vacation missed doses

Hi! My apologies if this should be on the Health board vs Lantus board…. I wasn’t sure, since I have a spreadsheet/signature… but I also don’t have BG numbers for him today. I’ve been reading/following along since the week he was diagnosed in March, but haven’t posted on the Lantus board yet. Once I return from vacation, I intend to more closely follow TR, post on the board, etc. But I have a more pressing question.

We’re out of town until Cooper’s PM shot on Friday. Last night our pet sitter tried to give him his first shot solo (she gave the night before with me present) and he hid, hissed, and wouldn’t let her near him. He even bailed on dinner in order to stay away from her. She tried again this morning and he did the same (plus swiped at her). So he’s going to be missing 4 shots in a row…. I’m so sad, because he was just starting to get good blue numbers too!

When I resume Friday evening, does his dose need to be adjusted lower to account for the depot being drained? Or can I resume at his current dose/close to it?

It should be noted that my sister is staying at the house, and he’s fine and happy when the pet sitter isn’t around, so behavior doesn’t seem to be related to his health.

Can you tell your sitter to try giving the shot while he eats? My cat will not let us give her a shot if she is not eating. While she eats, she does not care.
As for Friday, I would test him and give your regular dose. Chances are he will be very high due to the missed doses and will need it. He will let you know if that’s too much but looking at his SS, he was in blue only the last few cycles. Test him first and post here if you arenot sure what to do.

Thank you for catching the other post, forgot about that. :)

She did try when eating. That’s how he normally gets his shot, and doesn’t care/notice when we do it. But he’s running away when she comes near him with the shot (even when eating), or today turned around and swatted her. She tried sitting with him and giving him freeze dried chicken to help him get used to her presence, which helped until she tried to feed/shoot him. :arghh:

And thank you!! I’ll plan to shoot like normal for now

As he has been missing shots I would get a urine ketone test done if your sister can. If she can’t, get one when you get home. And tell the sitter/ your sister to sure he’s eating well. Not eating and not getting shots in a diabetic cat can lead to ketones which can be dangerous.
If you don’t have any, get a bottle of ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and follow the directions on the bottle, after you get a urine sample from your kitty.

Thanks Bron. She’s making sure he’s eating and getting snacks (no changes there) and I’ll get a ketone test when I get home. He has no history of ketones and I check roughly weekly, to be safe.
