@Marielle
Just in case you haven't seen this
Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to changehis/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar inthem and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes(excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), testhis/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Thanks, Diane! Wendy shared that with me last week, but I appreciate the reminder. I have a toothbrush and toothpaste for my three kittens, but I noticed the paste has sorbitol in it, so that's a no-go for Jude. I'll try to brush without paste and see how it goes. Thanks for all your helpful reminders and guidance as we've gotten onto the forums.

Hi Marielle
Tyler will not let me brush his teeth
My vet recommended just using some damp gauze or a baby facecloth to wipe the teeth. No toothpaste needed

I did a search on our site and found this posted by one of our members
It's more cleaning and rubbing than brushing; I tried with different kinds of toothbrushes but he won't let me.
What works great for us is to take a piece of gauze, fold it making sure it's not too big for his mouth, damp with warm water; gently wipe his lips trying to reach his teeth with the gauze, at that point he'll open his lips and you'll have access to the teeth; at first just pass the gauze on the teeth, short and sweet and he'll get used to it; then you can start rubbing a little! ( at the beginning the gauze might even be dirty....!)
I use a roll of gauze that I cut the size I need; the pads are too thick !

Here's one more
My homeopathic vet also suggested using a small amount of coconut oil on a cloth or kitty toothbrush on my cat's teeth, but he said the kitty's own digestive enzymes would break down the coconut oil.

Coconut oil has so many benefits
Edit use a very small amount
Tyler will let me rub his teeth and gums with the gauze

I tried to brush a few minutes ago, and it wasn't bad; I think if we work at it, he'll let me. I've got a couple of different brushes around the house, so I'll give them a try as well (like the type you only use a finger to brush with). I'm also going to try to find a diabetic friendly paste--Jude is very food motivated, so I think that something tasty might make the process work a bit better. His teeth worry me because they're a bit yellowed; I'm probably overly reacting though because I had them cleaned by the dentist a couple of years ago, and they said his teeth were fine with minimal plaque and no decay. Maybe he just needs a little teeth whitener (jk).

I'm going to buy the finger type one and try that. If I try with a tooth brush he only winds up biting it . I watch the videos on you tube and it looks so easy, but not with Tyler lol
He's been in remission for 3 years and 3 months now ( knick on wood)
I think Tyler is due for a teeth cleaning soon .
