Finally got to speak to his vet today. She apologized profusely about the topical steriod again and what it did to his BG. She said she now has proof that it absolutely effects bg levels and she won't be using this as a first treatment plan for diabetic cats moving forward.
I believe it was the owner of the facility i pissed off by questioning her knowledge of feline diabetes. She is also the one that was telling me to reduce his dose. I forwarded all the links to their office for TR. His vet didn't mention anything on the call regarding this. I'm not concerned about upsetting anyone though. When it comes to my cat, your ego should take a backseat. If it doesn't, you may find me unpleasant to deal with. I will say that I am impressed that both of these women stated they would be changing the way this product is handled moving forward. To me, that says they are willing to admit error and actually correct the problem, not pretend I am the problem. If I go away and they don't acknowledge the issue, the problem still exist.
His vet is sending me the link to the product she wants me to use cleaning his ears moving forward. This does not contain steroids.
She also stated that she can send me a link for chin wipe pads for his acne. It is cleared up now, but I'm doing a lot to prevent another break out. I have a baby brush, which is extremely soft bristled, that I use to very gently scrub the area (I pat the area with a rag if it is broken out, I don't scrub). I use a very small drop of unscented antibacterial soap on the brush and mix in a small cup of hot water. I do this after his last snack at +3 each day/night so stuff isn't sitting on his chin all day/night. I've also changed his dishes to all plates. Weekly, I'm soaking all of them and serving spoons in white vinegar in addition to the washing after each use. I'm getting the wipes too in case they make a difference. His chin looks as good now as before it did his first break out a few months ago. Putting this info out there for other's searching about these topics.
His vet stated she views low carb as 7%. I had been feeding Base 4% only. He started losing interest in eating. I'm mixing a 12%-14% into his 4% currently and he is loving life. He is running for his bowl of food again. He isn't really into the raw. I am still offering it though. I would prefer he be on a raw diet. I also know how hard it can be to try and change their diet. I will continue to offer the raw. He isn't getting more than a teaspoon at pm meal. When I go to bed, it is still on the plate, but gone in the am. I stopped mixing it into his food because he was taking hours to eat. He is far from a grazer. I knew something was up. I won't be trying to keep Basic at 4% only anymore.
The pep in his step from getting food his likes, his ear no longer bothering him, and nice bgs is refreshing to see.
Both of them are sleeping a lot because they are older cats, it is freezing, and that's just what cats do. We play/groom for at least 30 minutes a day.
Forgot to add: I'm hopeful we are over the high numbers from the steriods now.
