Vomiting cat not eating - next Lantus dose?

Hi

Tigster vomited a bit of his breakfast at around AMPS +3 and then the rest of it at +4. I gave him a small amount a bit later which he kept down for around an hour or so. The smell of food is making him nauseous (well he’s licking his lips but not in a yum yum way). The only thing that could have caused this (other than a medical issue) is maybe him being stressed from me applying his Libre but it’s not caused this reaction before.

I called the emergency vet who’ve said to wait but they will take him if it carries on. I’m going to call my regular vet tomorrow to get him in after work. I’ve syringed a little water into his mouth and he did have a tiny bit of Licky Lix but they’re high carb so don’t want to give too much although that’s the least of my worries at the moment.

My question is, he’s due for his 3.5u of Lantus in three and a half hours. What’s best for him to have if he still hasn’t eaten?

Thank you.

Do you have any Cerenia or ondansetron at hand that you can give him for the vomiting and nausea? If you can monitor and depending on the preshot values maybe. If you want to pay it safe, maybe give him a token dose.

Also looking at your spreadsheet, are you using one of our dosing methods? He earned a few reductions that you haven’t taken. His dose should be 2.75 units right now.

In addition, back on 10/17, you should have decrease but instead you increased his dose. If this is based on your vet’s advice I don’t think he/she knows much about dosing for feline diabetes. You should be dosing based on the nadir not the preshot values. That’s how you keep you’re cat safe and regulated.

Thank you. No I don’t have any of those available to me. He has eaten small amounts and kept them down but it’s taken some coaxing. I’m not convinced he’ll eat much at insulin time or overnight. I could give 1.5u tonight?

There was a period between 10/31 and 11/6 where the Libre readings were much lower than they should have been (I think because I secured it too tightly). The reliable readings start on 11/7. From here I think I think I’ve done increases/reductions properly but if you think not let me know.

I’ve just changed vet. I’m hoping to get an appointment with the new one tomorrow to discuss all of this. It’s been very taxing. The old vet wanted Tigster to get into low values and stay there for as long as possible. There was no questioning or reasoning with them unfortunately.

Have you read up on the 2 doing methods we use here as well as the yellow sticky notes on the Lantus forum?

If you want us to help you with dosing we can, but you’ll need to follow one of the 2. Frankly, relying on vet advice on visits only is not efficient because too much time goes by between visits. It’s also a good idea to have a backup meter to double check those lower readings from the libre since it tends to be glitchy with the lower numbers.

It’s also a good idea to always have an anti nausea and anti vomiting med at hand since it’s important that diabetic cats eat and a nauseated cat won’t eat.
You can try some tuna and or baby food to see if he’ll eat those

Agreed. I’m following TR and I check with a pet meter. I’ve also got a human meter coming.

Ive just taken him to an emergency vet for peace of mind. He’s given him an anti-nausea injection. We got home and Tig has wolfed his dinner down. Hopefully it stays where it should. :nailbiting:

I would call them and ask for a prescription for Cerenia then. The injection was most likely it and it will only last for 24 hours. I agree with peace of mind, Cerenia is a pet med so you should be able to get it from any pet online pharmacy like even chewy or at your vets office. The other one to consider is ondansetron. It’s a human med so any human pharmacy can dispense. It always worked better on both my cats btw. I always have both at hand at all times.

for TR, you need to decrease 1/4 unit every time he dips under 90 on a pet meter which the libre is, and increase after 3 days.
