? 23/4 - Do we drastically reduce Freya’s insulin?

Apologies for my ignorance but I’m still struggling to work out this/these forum(s).
Freya’s BG is not noticeably reducing, despite her receiving a HUGE insulin dose. It’s been suggested that we’re keeping her perpetually hypo so a drastic insulin dosage reduction is needed. Freya is onTR but it’s not working so far…
Her next dose is due in less than 10hrs & I still have no idea what I’m doing, what dose to give to stop Freya suffering or what her next dose should be. Someone kindly tagged another member @tiffmaxee in from the main forum but so far, no response & I’m getting worried.
Do I drastically reduce Freya’s insulin? If so, to what dose? What do I need to look out for iro blood sugar highs/lows to make what adjustments? The standard TR protocol is ok for high BGs but less helpful when it comes to the lows so all advice gratefully received!
 
Here is that post on Feline Health. I disagree with the suggestion to reduce her dose drastically. As you said, you have been raising her dose in a systematic fashion and testing enough to know how low the dose was taking her, before you increased.

When following TR, you reduce if you see a number below 50, which you have not. You did see a 59 on 5.5 units on the 14th, but then you reduced right away to 5.25 units. I'm not sure why. Then you essentially jumped from 5.25 units to 6 units, without holding the 5.5 unit dose long enough. We stay on the same dose for at least six cycles, for the depot to build and to see what that dose can do.

It looks like you are going to shoot 5.5 units tonight. I think that is a good idea. Then stay with 5.5 units for at least 6 cycles, unless she goes below 50.

My girl Neko got to 8.75 units of Lantus. There are some other medical conditions (treatable) that can cause a cat to need higher doses. It could be Freya needs a higher dose. Are you testing regularly for ketones?

I’ll readily admit that we panicked. Such a dramatic reduction over a relatively short space of time, we didn’t want her BGs to keep reducing overnight as the thought of her going hypo alone was just scary. We over-reacted, her high BGs almost ever since have been proof enough of that! We have never given Freya 6 units (yet) - the spreadsheet is not formatted correctly so does not accept fractions. Correct that anomaly on the WW SS, it does not necessarily carry over to the US SS, annoying beyond belief for someone like me who struggles to see the tiny tab which allows me to correct the readings. Apologies if I missed some readings, but hopefully I’ve corrected it now - for the record, Freya’s maximum dose has so far only ever been 5.5 units.
According to the TR protocol, we now need to increase Freya’s insulin to 6 units. I’ll admit; I’m scared but if this is what is necessary to finally get her sugars down, then so be it. We’re out of the house on Monday so any insulin changes need to take into account that we just can’t/won’t be here to do blood tests, plus Freya will have to have her insulin 2hrs early on Monday morning. We can make up that time gradually over the next few days, but Monday will be an issue…

Try and find a protein treat she likes. That helped me get Max to not hide when he needed fluids. I was lucky he was fine with testing. You could bake chicken and if she won’t eat it purée it.

I’ve yet to work this website out, but I need some sleep. Do we increase Freya’s morning insulin to 6 units or not?

stay with 5.5 units for at least 6 cycles, unless she goes below 50 like Wendy said in her post. #2
So in the morning you will give 5.5 and at night 5.5 that will be your 6th cycle, then post for advice
Unless she drops under 50 then you reduce the dose by 0.25 units

Thank you! Unfortunately, the 5.5 unit dose will have to be maintained until Thursday, when my husband gets home…
