WE DID IT! LANTUS STARTS TOMORROW FOR OUR PM DOSE!
$35 for 5 pens thanks to the coupon!!! ❤️

Need help to figure out now a good starting dose to be ready! :)

I know since Vetsulin is in and out we can go right away, so it'll likely be our PM dose since pharmacy has to order it. We're currently at 1.5u but we were working our way up to 1.75u by the looks of things.
I have the u-100 syringes ready and will brush up on the research for using the syringes into the pens, and familiarizing myself with the DEPO so I'm prepared to shoot if we have lower pre shots. I know it's very picky compared to Vetsulin with timing. I'm currently researching TR protocol to understand it better, as I feel I test enough to do it but want to get a little more experience under my belt before switching our dosing method! :)
Thank you! So excited I could jump for joy!

I’m so very happy for you and Lando!

As I mentioned, we usual take the current insulins dose into consideration and with the numbers on your spreadsheet, I personally think starting on 1.5u is a good start but please wait to hear from our experienced members before going forward. Remember that the depot takes a good 5-7 days to show the full effects of the lantus dose when first starting out.

Here’s a great video on drawing from a pen with syringes. The main difference is that you don’t add any air to the pen cartridge since there’s a built in compression already.

Going to tag a few to help guide you on your new lantus dose :) Can’t wait to see how he does.

Thank you a million times over!! I could seriously scream I'm so excited!! I so hope we start to even see a LITTLE regulation or consistency with Lantus.
And gotcha I'll watch this right now. I know not to put any air into the cartridge and if I accidentally pull too much insulin out to not squirt it back into the pen! (I've been studying! Lol!)

The more you know the better equipped you are to tackle this disease :bookworm: I found once I could wrap my head around what’s happening and why, I was able to help Gus better and my own stress levels came down quite a bit :bighug:

I spend so much time studying my babe says I need to have some more "me" time and not so much "Lando" time but hey it really does make a world of difference!
Now if only I could understand what the Hell Lando is doing! Now his Preshots are into the 400s. I swear the higher we've climbed on dosage the higher his numbers have gone... Just can't break through the floor. Lowest nadirs I'm getting are in the 200s :(
Thankfully we've had no other serious symptoms and no keytones, just the usual peeing more. Really hoping Lantus will be our miracle worker. I have high hopes from the way everyone talks about it!

I would start on 1.5U of Lantus too

@TankNRK ....do your syringes have half unit marks?

Yes I made sure I got u-100 syringes with half unit markings :)

Question: when the depo fills after 5-7 days, do I give it more time if I need to change dosages up and down? or can I change doses right away if it's not working? Does it take another 5-7 days to adjust or if doing TR can I change more frequently? Like 3-5 days? Just wondering how to handle it vs Vetsulin :)

If after the initial 7 days, the numbers say that an increase is needed, you can do so, assuming he doesn’t drop into reduction territory before then.

With SLGS, you wait a week on any given dose, do a curve and reevaluate the dose (though if you test enough a curve may not be needed) - unless reduction is earned (drops under 90)

With TR, changing the dose (if needed) can be 3-5 days after the initial week, how long you wait is all in the numbers … unless a reduction is earned (dropping under 50)

I would highly recommend that you start posting daily in the lantus forum if you start TR, you may need the extra support at first - I did! (I would suggest you do this regardless of protocol you choose :p)

Awesome, understood! I'll probably give it a bit before going to TR as I'm still learning, but I think I test enough for TR! I think once I get the hang of how the Lantus cycle works with Lando I'll probably switch over and ask for help regularly.
Thankfully I'm off every 2-3 days with my work schedule so it makes regular testing for nadirs pretty easy instead of a 5 day on 2 day off schedule!

When you do the swap over, can you draw a thick line and colour it through the SS so that it can be clearly seen when you swapped to Lantus please. And write Started Lantus in the line please.
Also with the swap can you put Lantus into the signature please?
Until you get more used to Lantus I would post here for any questions about dosing.

Sure thing! I can make that happen! :)

1.5 units is a good place to start. Don't be worried if it takes a couple days to start seeing movement, as the depot builds. Or not, cat's don't like to be predictable. :cat:

As for increases, on day 7 if following SLGS, you can do a curve, evaluate the dose and decide if you need an increase. Of course the caveat is that if he goes under 90 in those 7 days, you reduce the dose.

If you were following TR, you would usually hold for 5 days before increasing. But there is some leeway to increase earlier if the numbers are all really high. And reduce if he goes under 50 (human meter) in that time frame.

Good luck with the insulin switch. Both Neko and I were much happier after we swapped to Caninsulin (what Vetsulin is called in the rest of the world).

Sounds good! I won't be able to run a full curve until next Saturday so I'll probably hold the dose that long unless I can find a way to leave work for a couple checks to be safe until I can run a full curve (I wonder how his Nadir will change) then go from there about increasing/decreasing (obviously unless I notice too low numbers/too highs) just to be safe while I learn how he responds to the Lantus :) my schedules a little funky this week but will be back to normal soon!
Tomorrow's PM dose we'll hit lil Lando with Lantus as long as the scripts ready in time, otherwise we'll do it Wednesday morning! :)

Good luck to you and Lando and I am so excited for you!!
Just want to add my encouragement to post daily here on FDMB. All the gains and knowledge I got for Pearl happened here on FDMB. You will need the support. Many times things are not clear cut and you may get confused. This is the life saver, the FDMB. You will become an expert with support behind your decisions.

Hooray for Lantus!!

Thank you SO much everyone.
I could not do it without your love and support!
I'm so ready to get off the Vetsulin roller coaster, We just keep climbing HIGHER (now 450s after finally breaking 200, nadir last night!)

Tonight we start anew!
I will start posting more often :)
