Heart meds?

Hello,
Today my girl is going to see an internal medicine specialist . We are in Canada. I can’t get her regulated and her bg goes up after her insulin injections (her +3,+4+5) and so on…
I started her on semintra for her blood pressure (she has protenuria and elevated blood pressure) last week, and it seems after I started the semintra she goes up with her bg readings . Her vet said it would not do this and actually the opposite can happen (hypo). I have read that there is another heart medication available for cats but I think it’s more popular in the USA . Does anyone know the name of this medication as I would like to ask about it.
I had to fast Tigera for this appt today and I am so upset as she is crying and scratching her door (I’ve had to seclude her so she doesn’t eat the other cat’s food). Her amps was high again at 20.4 but the specialty vet said to give 1/2 her regular dose this morning. So I gave her only 1.50U and she typically gets 3.75U but soon to be 4U as it’s been 6 cycles on the 3.75 and she still has high numbers
If anyone has any advice or can recommend the heart medication safe for ckd and diabetes pls let me know so I can ask about it. Will she be ok being so hungry? I feel like I am hurting her and she is so sad and upset with me not feeding her . It’s so hard to ignore her crying I’m going insane. The appt is not for 4 more hours TIA

Hi Antonella,

The other blood pressure med may be amlodipine. Chispa’s vet added it to her telmisartan (generic Semintra) when telmisartan alone was not controlling her BP. It’s been two years and she’s done very well on the combination. I get mine from Allivet.com, but I don’t know whether they ship to Canada.

Best of luck with the vet appointment today. I feel your pain at having to fast Tigera… I’m sure she will be fine, but it is so painful to see our babies in distress!! Hang in there, both of you

Benazepril is the most commonly used one for raised BP plus proteinuria in the US. True story though - many of us in the US would prefer Semintra for our cats as it seems to work better for a lot of them. I guess sometimes the grass isn't always greener.
