Henry’s Mom

Member Since 2022
Hello, just wanted to share that Henry has started semi-walking on his rear toes again, the left leg more than the right. I could cry tears of joy at how resilient Henry is.

A bit of a background: Henry started to exhibit weakness around August 2022, then in September started walking on his hocks. In addition he injured his right knee sometime in September, I am assuming since he was getting weak, he tweaked the knee during a jump or other movement. He really had a rough year last year, besides the diagnosis of diabetes, he had a major ear infection that caused an abscess around his jaw. His old vet said it was cancer before even taking a biopsy. Biopsy came up negative for cancer but his vet still said it was cancer, didn’t check blood work, didn’t discover the diabetes until I came back insisting on bloodwork. (He had just had bloodwork done in June and all was normal). It is a recurrent ear infection so the vet is working closely with us on managing that as well.

Henry also stopped grooming around the same time, and became severely matted all over, and we had to have his luxurious locks shaved off.

The above vet started him on vetsulin 2 units, in the 2 weeks he started on vetsulin I found this forum and changed his vet, who did more for Henry than his vet of 15 years ever did. And after an additional 2 weeks on a lowered dose of vetsulin the new vet started Henry on Lantus the other day. While we are waiting to pass the initial week or so, he already is not having the dips into the 40s.

Now seeing him walk on his toes again is just a lot, in a happy way, and wanted to share our experience, though we are still working to get his sugar and dose regulated. Just hoping for the best and that he can live out his years without suffering.

Forgot to mention: Also because of the information on this forum, I started him on Zobaline about a month ago.

Kay I’ve just seen a 93 on the SS at +4. We don’t want him to drop under 90 so can you give him some food and retest in 30 minutes to see he hasn’t dropped lower please
Thank you Bron, I will do so next time he has a 90 around +4 - this reading was from earlier today (11am EST). He actually did wind up eating lunch soon after that.

I am so happy with the switch to Lantus as well. While it hasn’t been a week yet, his #s are already so much better (at least from my understanding of the spreadsheet?). And thank you :)! That photo is from 2020. I am not sure how to add an updated photo in my posts yet but I’ll figure it out, lol. And thank you I will add SLGS now. At this point, SLGS would be the appropriate protocol to follow him, correct? Thank you

Kay, you can follow TR if you want to as you are only feeding wet food and you are testing enough. It means you can increase the dose more quickly and the reduction BG is 50 not 90.
Have a look a the two dosing methods and see what you think
https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/thr...-low-go-slow-slgs-tight-regulation-tr.210110/

Next time you get a big drop like you did at +1 today, make sure you give him some food and test again in 1 hour.
A drop in BG at +1 or +2 that is below the preshot BG is an indication that it is going to be an active cycle and drop further. So be on alert.

Thank you Bron! Will review above.

One more question, being that Henry is still new to getting his ears poked (he was on the Libre which ended; vet reapplied a new one but he ripped it off last night), which hours would be best to check his sugar besides AMPS and PMPS? (To avoid pricking him too many times a day until he’s more used to testing?) I was thinking at +4 or +5 because that’s when he would dip on Vetsulin but I know the action of Lantus might be different for him. Thank you as always for your help.

I think until you get more used to how he is reacting to the Lantus, I would get a +2 because that can tell you if it is going to be an active cycle or not. If the +2 is the same or lower than the preshot, I would get a +4. If it is a really big drop you might want to get a +3.
Then I would test until nadir……you will know when that happens as the BG will start to go back up. Once that happens you can stop til the next preshot BG. How does that sound?
He is doing really well on the Lantus. I am glad you didn’t give a bigger dose as the 0.1 dose is getting him into green BGs and the depot is not full yet. Would you mind putting in the new 2023 SS what day you started Lantus please…in the remarks column.
This pm cycle he has dropped at +2 so I would get a +4.

Thank you! I will do my best this week on getting the readings timely. We are back to work tomorrow and on some days I have to go to the office. I am going to see what I can arrange with the hubby. Added Lantus start date to remarks column. :cat: Also, I just took the PM +3 and it seems like the reading went up a little bit. Can this happen? He ate dinner after the PMPS. Thank you

It’s possible he might be starting a bounce from the green BG this morning.
Did you feed him at +2?
Whatever the reason, it’s nothing to worry about. Cats like to keep us guessing!:cat:

Thank you @Bron and Sheba (GA) Bron. They sure do! I did give him a few treats at +2 after checking his sugar, about 5 pc of temptations treats. I do need to look for better treats, any recs? Have not searched the forum yet but I will. I have not been giving these to him since he was diagnosed with diabetes but wanted to give him something for being a good sport with the poking.
