Henry’s Mom
Member Since 2022
Hello, just wanted to share that Henry has started semi-walking on his rear toes again, the left leg more than the right. I could cry tears of joy at how resilient Henry is.
A bit of a background: Henry started to exhibit weakness around August 2022, then in September started walking on his hocks. In addition he injured his right knee sometime in September, I am assuming since he was getting weak, he tweaked the knee during a jump or other movement. He really had a rough year last year, besides the diagnosis of diabetes, he had a major ear infection that caused an abscess around his jaw. His old vet said it was cancer before even taking a biopsy. Biopsy came up negative for cancer but his vet still said it was cancer, didn’t check blood work, didn’t discover the diabetes until I came back insisting on bloodwork. (He had just had bloodwork done in June and all was normal). It is a recurrent ear infection so the vet is working closely with us on managing that as well.
Henry also stopped grooming around the same time, and became severely matted all over, and we had to have his luxurious locks shaved off.
The above vet started him on vetsulin 2 units, in the 2 weeks he started on vetsulin I found this forum and changed his vet, who did more for Henry than his vet of 15 years ever did. And after an additional 2 weeks on a lowered dose of vetsulin the new vet started Henry on Lantus the other day. While we are waiting to pass the initial week or so, he already is not having the dips into the 40s.
Now seeing him walk on his toes again is just a lot, in a happy way, and wanted to share our experience, though we are still working to get his sugar and dose regulated. Just hoping for the best and that he can live out his years without suffering.
Forgot to mention: Also because of the information on this forum, I started him on Zobaline about a month ago.
