12/29 Molly AMPS 193

Hi Adrienne. The Cerenia is for vomiting and to some extent can help with nausea and is also anti-inflammatory in the GI tract. If she really does not eat then you need Zofran for nausea if she’s showing the signs of nausea. But you had said before that she was still eating and drinking well. Is she still?

Yes, still eating and drinking. DH thinks I should put her back on the Cerenia, but I don't see the point? still diarrhea and some days she poops good.

Well maybe you should save the Cerenia for later when she may really need it. Did the vet say why it was prescribed or “just in case you need it?” You could ask the vet if it’s okay to stop it since you saw no change in her while she was taking it - don’t have to tell them you already did. How much were you giving her. The dose is typically one mg per pound of body weight. Oh but you are in Canada so in kg. How much does she weigh?

I was talking to the vet 2 weeks ago, she said I could stop giving the Cerenia to her. If I think she needed it that I could give her the Cerenia. I was giving her half a tablet? every 24 hours, she weighed 10lbs a month ago, she could've lost more weight.

Okay good. Half of a 16 mg tablet would be correct. But if you didn’t see any improvement, I would save it in case she needs it in the future. No point in giving her stuff she doesn’t seem to need right now.

Yesterday
Molly was mad at me last night, she hates the predisolone.
I was wondering what the cerenia is good for?
Back to work today, long enough to get caught up on work.
Have you tried putting the pred in a capsule? Or is it liquid? The liquid tastes very bitter, so if it’s liquid you could ask for tablets and put them in a clear capsule that you pill and then she won’t have to taste the bitter pill. I do that for all my pilling. Bonus is if you have more than one medication you can usually fit them all into one capsule. Bigger bonus if she will eat it in a pill pocket if not worried about the carbs in those. I get the number 4 and 3 capsules from capsuline website. 4 is the smallest and a 5mg tablet of pred would fit in it for us. Instead of a pill pocket I dip the tip of the piller in fortiflora and Biggie usually doesn’t spit it out then. He will 9/10 times swallow it like it was a treat.

Cerenia stops vomiting. It is bitter so I give something to eat before and after. BCP pharmacy in Texas makes flavored chew treats which have been great.

It’s liquid form, I just squirt it in her mouth quick. I asked them if they could put in a pill form, unfortunately no they can’t. I was lucky to get the pred at all.

What’s the dose/concentration of prednisolone. When you get a chance look at the bottle. I was pretty sure you said it was going to be liquid. It must be a dose thing - the reason why they can’t do pills. I use tablets and my boy just gobbles it up in a pill pocket. I put most of my cats’ pills in gelatin capsules. I don’t need to with the pred, but always put Cerenia in a number 4 size gelatin capsule as it’s very bitter and a lot of cats will foam at the mouth if they get a taste. I know you have stopped the Cerenia at this point, which seems like a good idea (per our earlier discussion) but I am only mentioning this for the future.

I am the queen of gelcaps. On my kitchen table are little jelly jars with numbers written on them with a sharpie. I have gelatin capsules from size 5 (the smallest) to size 2 (the largest) in there. I need different sizes for my cat Ginger’s various heart meds. Luckily she’s very easy to pill and I can use the larger size to stuff more pills in one capsule.

I hope you will get home early and find Molly doing well. It must have been hard to go back and leave Molly.

It’s not as hard to get in the US so I wonder if your vet could order from an online pharmacy for you. It looks like Wedgewood compounds it into tablets and ships to Canada. Might be worth asking. One of my cats hated the liquid too. https://www.wedgewoodpharmacy.com/medications/prednisolone/
He would just have to call in the scrip and they could then bill you and mail to you.

It’s liquid 1ml every 12 hours. They make it at a wellness centre here. I asked if I could have in pill form and they said no.
I worked half day today. It was hard leaving Molly this morning. But I don’t go back to work til Tuesday. She wanted more attention from me today, which was good.

The vet gave me a prescription, and Wendy did a google search. Found that it was available here in town. I have half a bottle left.

I was wondering if it said how many milligrams per mL (mg/mL). Did they give you a hard time about giving her the prednisolone? I’m happy you are off for a bit more now.

I wish I could send you some tablets. I have a very large stock of prednisolone tablets (5 mg) but it would be totally illegal for me to send them to Canada! Also, with regard to getting stuff from Wedgewood, I have a friend in Calgary who had ordered some Cabergoline from Wedgewood Pharmacy in New Jersey and was able to have them mail it to her. Then some new Canadian regulations were enacted and she ordered a refill of the Cabergoline and they mailed it. But the authorities commandeered the package and there was a huge problem with customs and …. To make a long story shorter…. She never did get her Cabergoline. So I would make sure before ordering anything that it can clear customs. But I think you will be okay with the liquid, maybe if you just go really fast and give her treats afterwards it will be okay!

Oh my gosh! How terrible!! So frustrating given how important those meds are. Good to know the regs beforehand for sure. Maybe there is some step they need to do now and it will be ok. But definitely good advice to check.

It says 20mg /ML give once daily for 60 days. But I should call the vet and ask for a refill?
So she is getting 20 mg. Per day since every milliliter contains 20 mg. It sounds like you still have half a bottle left so just plan to get a refill in time for her not to skip a dose. It sounds like you are managing things.

I have an aunt that lives in New York. My mom thought that my aunt could it the pred, ship it to me. I told mom I couldn’t do that, it’s against the law. She didn’t understand that. I’m just happy that Wendy found the pred here for me.

How long does it take for the Cerenia to work? I have Molly one last night. Just wondering if that’s why she’s a bit better?
