Need Help with Lantus Dosage Reset

@Suzanne & Darcy - he's been eating lately but has also been very weird about it. He'll get up and walk away but if i bring him back, he'll begin eating again. And yes, we gave two snacks today. I think he'll eat but he's been a little unpredictable lately - both snacks where eaten without hesitation though.

the current reset was due to the advice of a moderator FD FB group.
Unfortunately, not all FD FB groups have people giving good suggestions. Don't beat yourself up on this, you are not alone. :bighug:
s his shot tonight dependent on the amount of food he eats for dinner or his PMPS?
Nope, Lantus typically doesn't onset for 2-3 hours after the shot, so he doesn't need to eat all of his food right away. We also have many members with kitties who are grazers.

I just want to confirm this; did this behavior just start over the last few days? Did it start about the same time the slugishness and general appearance of being "out of it" started? Also; were you able to get another ketone test? Slightly concerned about DKA given all of this. Do you think he's lost any weight/fat?

Buddy's not drank nearly as much today as usual. I've not been able to check for ketones because of this.

Is there anything we can give him to encourage him to drink? Is chicken broth okay? Or should we put water in a syringe and feed it to him?

We plan to test in about 1/2 hour and then give him a small snack before bed but we are not sure what to do about the water intake.

(I should also mention that he had cystitis about a month or so ago and it went away.)

Usually it is recommended to give some watered down tuna water, or some watered down chicken broth, or to get a water fountain (don’t know if you have one.) You can syringe a little water slowly into the side of his mouth if you think it’s necessary. Have you done this before with him or another cat? Just be careful to do it in the side of his mouth and slowly so that there is no risk that he will aspirate any water. Since he is on wet food, he may be getting enough water from his food. Do you add water to his food? It’s always a good way to keep them hydrated.

You can water down anything— baby food — churu stick type things, wet food, etc.

Can they have Churu sticks? I have Nala brand stick but have never given them to him.

He just had a nighttime snack - started by using the gravy from the Stella and Chewy Purrfect Pate and watered that down. He drank most of it and then had his tsp of the Weruva WX - he ate all of that too. i'll be watching him most of the night, not sure i'll be able to relax and sleep well. :/

Thank you for your responses.

Negative ketones! Hooray. I always used the Tiki Stix. I would check the ingredients on the stick treats that you have to make sure they are meat and broth/water with no added starch.

I don’t see it in your signature but I assume since you are feeding the Weruva WX that you are limiting his phosphorous- so you would have to check the treats for phosphorus content as well. I am glad that you are restricting phosphorus since I see in his labs of last October that it was 6.6 which is higher than optimal. Somewhere around 4 or 4.5 would be good. I feed all of my adult cats some of the lower phosphorus Weruva BFF PLAY foods to reduce the stress on their kidneys. I have not had to go to the WX yet.

They are called Love Nala - I won a bunch in a contest on Instagram (along with other great cat stuff including a box of Yeowwww cat nip toys). I haven't given him any of the treats but I did just look them up and they have starch. I'll donate them all to a local rescue. Our other cat can't have them either - he's allergic to poultry and I stay away from giving them fish.

Yes! Buddy is eating Weruva WX (ever since his blood work in Oct). He gets a little bit of Stella and Chewy's Purrfect Pate chicken when he's being very finicky but the Weruva has become is favorite...thankfully! He's very particular about his foods texture vs flavor. He will only eat pate.

We were so happy to see the negative ketones. We will continue to monitor them.

Pretty uneventful day. He got some really good napping in - he's been restless the past couple of days, so it was nice to see him sleep so soundly.

It's feeding time again now and we will test again before bed.

Thanks to everyone on this thread, appreciate all the comments and help we've gotten so far.

I'll keep you posted and post questions when we have them.

So glad to see negative ketones earlier today, keep a close eye since they can creep up with cats who are prone, and perhaps a favour to ask, can you start a new post to continue tomorrow? You can link this one in the new one, and this one is getting a wee bit long ;)
