10/24 LANDO - well he stopped eating again

Lando demando

Very Active Member
AMPS 117 and PMPS 119
Im pretty sure his numbers are low since he has had very little food today. Tonights shot i did a drop.
I have to say im frustrated worried and upset

the odd thing is that he ate half of a sheba pate portion, so im going with that as a temporary solution. He has kidney disease so since that is high in phos i cant feed him that for long

Would love to hear any thoughts

I’m so sorry he’s refusing to eat the food that would be good both for CKD and diabetes, it’s so disheartening. I feel your pain, my civvie with chronic pancreatitis often goes off previous favorites and starts losing weight and I worry myself sick while doing a song and dance with new foods until I can find one he will eat for a bit. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking and exhausting at once. Sending hugs your way and Lando’s :bighug:

I think at this point, if he needs a couple of days of eating Sheba or whatever other LC isn’t great for his CKD, if it were me I’d probably go with it, to solve the more pressing problem of him needing to eat.

Do you have any idea what causes his anorexia? Pain or nausea due to pancreatic issues? Boredom with same food? Feeling crummy from other triggers or the CKD? I like to take a Sherlock approach with my cats but I feel like you’re already doing that.

Thanks for the encouragement and ear Virginie, i really needed that. Yes Lando has pancreatitis also ( the holy trinity of bummer ailments) i can just never tell when he is having a flare, there are no big tell tale signs. I guess not eating must be the biggie since chewie does the same thing.

yes, my best guess would be pancreatitis or boredom with food. He is still on cerenia and i am going to call my vet tomorrow to see if ondesteron may be a yes THIS time.

thanks again. I REALLY appreciate it

oh and PS agreed with the sheba its at least not HORRIBLE phos just in the low 200s rather than under 200

It’s my old man Wicket who has pancreatitis. For us cerenia wasn’t working, bupe just knocked him out and he would eat even less, so he ended up taking a low dose of prednisolone daily (2.5mg, I know it’s sadly not a great option for sugar cats) and a low dose of gabapentin twice a day for any pain he might be having. He did great on that for over a year, but sometimes out of nowhere something rocks the boat and he stops eating his usual food. Then I will start giving ondansetron.

I hope Lando can try ondansetron and it works for him!
Have you ever tried feeding him rehydrated freeze dried raw, or frozen raw? Not sure about the phosphorus but those are usually good LC options and the novelty might entice him?

Hang in there! You two are in my thoughts.

Oh a different kitty poor ol guy!
Yes im hoping to try ondesteron for him, its been the one tug of war im having with my vet. Btw if Lando is in pain, then wow he hides it very well with purring. ( shrug)

yes i had successfully gotten Lando to eat the freeze dried raw stellas and chewys but he was then diagnosed ckd and S&C is high in phos
Tiffmaxee mentioned small batch lamb patties that are frozen raw and im trying my best to get him to eat that ( no luck yet)

Poor Lando. Have you tried phosphate binders? Or do you think he would notice in his food and not eat it.
Thanks Christine! Well that is certainly on the table. I purchased some a while back, but the community at tanyas ckd told me that his levels werent high enough to introduce the binder. Definitely something i hope to chat with the vet about.
And yes… i feel like whatever he eats on his own is better than syringe feeding for a day or so at least
