? 18 hour glucose curve

Hello! I had read somewhere (I think a comment in the FB group?) that instead of the every 2 hours for 12 hours you can do every 3 hours for 18 hours. Is that still true? I am supposed to be doing a glucose curve on Leo and realized I had already been doing every 3 hours today and I can keep that going if it will count as a glucose curve.

Yes you can do it every 3 hours for 18 hours :cat:

Yvonne I see you are feeding dry , have you read the 2 dosing methods for Lantus
They will tell you when an increase or decrease is needed
Since you are feeding dry you will need to follow the SLGS method
Here is a little bit about it but I will also give you the link to read about it

Also after you are done with the curve I would post and ask someone to take a look at your spreadsheet and see if an increase is needed. Leo's been on that dose for quite awhile now
SLGS Dosing Method

Hold the dose for at least a week:
  • Unless your cat won’t eat or you suspect hypoglycemia
  • Unless your kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L). If kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L) decrease the dose by 0.25 unit immediately.
After 1 week at a given dose perform a 12 hour curve, testing every 2 hours OR perform an 18 hour curve, testing every 3 hours. Note: Random spot checks are often helpful to "fill in the blanks" on kitty's spreadsheet. The goal is to learn how low the current dose is dropping kitty prior to making dose adjustments.
  • If nadirs are more than 150 mg/dl (8.3 mmol/L), increase the dose by 0.25 unit
  • If nadirs are between 90 (5 mmol/L) and 149 mg/dl (8.2 mmol/L), maintain the same dose
  • If nadirs are below 90 mg/dl (5mmol/L), decrease the dose by 0.25 unit

Here is how you would do it
So if you start tomorrow morning or when ever you put the
Date, Leo ,AMPS # and any other tests you do after that like the BG number @+2 ,etc
To go back and add those tests to your title look to the right and you will see the word Thread Tools tap on that then tap on Edit Title , add those tests and tap save
You can continue with his PMPS numbers on the same title :cat:
We also link your previous days post to the new one

By the way are you using the newU-100 syringes with the Half Unit Markings since we adjust the dose by 0.25 units at a time , these have 0.5 increments but it's easier to use these when you half to adjust doses by 0.25 units

Okay! I never know which board to post to because I guess it wasn't technically a lantus question so I posted it here.

Yes! I saw it :) I am supposed to be doing a curve for his vet so we can see if his dose needs increased but I will definitely come back here for more information before I increase since I didn't realize it was supposed to be done in smaller increments. Is my vet going to be upset if they want to go up to say 3 from 2 and I don't go up that high?

Let me tell you something if I would have listened to my vet who told me about dosing that came from one of the other vets in the practice about dosing I never would have gotten Tyler into remission without the help of the experienced members here.
Most vets don't know that much about diabetes.
We don't base the dose on the Pre Shots we base them on how low the BG number is .
By increasing by whole or even half units you can miss what a good dose for Leo would be.
I would just say to your vet you are not comfortable increasing by whole units or just yes him to death lol
To tell you the truth I never once asked my vet about dosing, I just used her if Tyler ever got sick.
I told her all about this Group and explained everything to her and she was so impressed that she let me do what I wanted to do and was on board with me

You don’t want to miss a good dose by moving too fast.

Hi Ladies can you explain why it's not good to increase by full units better than I did above
Yvonne is doing an 18 hour curve now and her vet wants to see it
Plus I told her I think she has been holding the dose too long
I told her to post and ask for someone to look at the curve to see if she should increase
