? Carb ?

Now that I'm off the raw diet, I'm trying to figure out the carb thing on canned food. Dr Peterson has a handy list with carbs listed, but it's a bit outdated and some varieties are not listed. Reading through posts it looks like when using the online calculators, I should be looking at dry matter. That said, when I compare a product numbers from the Pierson list and the calculators or product info, the dry matter number comes nowhere near the Pierson number. What should I be looking at?

Ziwi Rabbit & Lamb
Pierson list: 3%
Ziwi website & scheyderweb calculator: 3.5% (as received/wet matter) 15% (dry matter)

I just bought & have been feeding today some Ziwi Mackeral and Lamb the the numbers are thus
Pierson: not listed
Ziwi website 4% (as received) 16% (dry matter)
scheyderweb calculator: 1.5% (wet matter) 6% (dry matter)

Maus's numbers are climbing and I'm really confused about what I'm feeding and if the new food is the cause of her increasing bg.

If you click on Jax’s ss you will find the tab for the carb calculator.
Yes, I saw it, but can't do a copy/paste from her sheet. I also saw the calculator info & my husband is helping me with it now. Funny, I can tell you how many porta-potties, beer & parking needed for 200 sailors, but my eyes glazed at the page of math :nailbiting:

Update, I just discovered a huge difference in the numbers listed on the Pierson table vs the Ziwi website for the Rabbit & Lamb:

ZIWIPEAK Rabbit & Lamb:
Pierson table:
Protein 35%
Fat 62%
Carbs 3%

Ziwi website
protein: 13% wet / 54 dry
Fat: 5% wet / 21% dry
Carbs 3.5% wet / 15% dry

Pierson’s list is old. The manufacturers change their ingredients often and don’t tell us. I think with Covid and the supply chain mess lots of substitutions are made.

Here's an old thread with @JaxBenji 's explanation on calculating carbs in cat food.

Does Ziwi's website list the carb % as 15% on a dry matter basis vs 3% on Dr. Pierson's website????

ETA: Looks like it is 15% so borderline MC-HC!

So it looks like I need another low carb, no chicken food asap
I picked up a can of RAWZ Rabbit pate to see if she liked plain rabbit but have no confidence in my ability to do the carb math

Ziwi website 4% (as received) 16% (dry matter)

Not sure how Ziwi gets 16% carbs for this. For the Rabbit and Lamb, the Ziwi and Sheyderweb calculator numbers match. I wonder if there is a typo on the Ziwi website. 16% instead of 6%

Noticed the can and short list on the website are labeled Guaranteed Analysis & numbers are different than the long lists which are labeled Typical Analysis. Using the GA numbers plugged into the Scheyer calculator dry carbs & DH cross checked with his calculations (married to Mr Math is handy):
Ziwi Rabbit & Lamb: 7%
Ziwi Mackerel & Lamb: 11%
Rawz Rabbit pate: 1-2% guessing ash from adding other ingredients like taurine & magnesium

Pierson is still way off

Looks like Rawz is the lc winner for now & have some not inexpensive higher carb, no chicken options on hand. Heading back to town tomorrow to check other options. The store carries lots of higher end pet foods including several varieties of frozen raw & she'll order anything her distributors carry. Nice to support a local small business. I just haven't had time to do more homework thinking I had a good short-term solution with the Ziwi

Will be looking for low carb, no chicken options

FWIW I drove myself crazy too with Ziwipeak and calculating the %. I ultimately decided that calculating the %of carbs DMB vs ME was futile . I decided instead to look at the ingredients. The source of carbs in it's food is from chick peas which have a low glycemic index.
Also, it took her about a month on Ziwi, while on Prozinc, to see our first green. In the meantime she was less hungry and more social.
For Cleo, she was more herself by removing wheat and soy and peas from her food. I also discovered she does better with carrots, potatoes and chick peas as the carb source.
Have you read this thread https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/carb-sensitivity-thoughts.177243/ ?

I am in no way advocating that you keep Maus on Ziwi, I just wanted to convey what I have learned... that food is more than what's on the label :bighug:
