Hi All

Just wanted to check in with you all regarding Kaz.

To start he is ok it’s me that’s been a bit unwell and yes I am beginning to feel better and hope that as the days roll on I will be back to myself.

Kaz’s numbers are still higher than they should but this is due partly to me as I have been feeding him a combination of 0% carb food and slightly higher than I would carbs as I have simply not been well enough to check his blood.

I have also picked up on the fact that for his evening meals he’s not necessarily eating them when the timer clicks up. On one occasion he ate at least one of the meals very close to breakfast and then night before last I noticed at 2.30am that one of the earlier meals was still there and one meal had yet to open but when I get up a few hours later both meals were gone. Think this is what’s causing the higher morning BG readings. I may go back to only 2 meals over night as I don’t think he needs the third meal and it may stop him from wanting to eat at breakfast time. He’s getting a bit fat.

I am hoping that I can slowly start to add an additional BG tests in. Also noticed that getting the blood has been slightly harder. I have been able to get small amount but its not enough for the Ketone tests which I will check as soon as enough blood can be gathered. Have the device ready to go next to the usual monitor.

I am hoping over the next 7-10 days to start bringing the numbers down again so that Kaz can get another reduction.

Again thank you for helping Yutong while I was gone. I think it was too much for her as I don’t think she will be doing Xmas but I was going to check back with her in a month or so to see.

Claire

Good to hear you are on the mend. Covid is no fun.
It does look like Kaz needs more insulin but if you can get some more tests in during the cycles that would be good. It is possible he could be dropping lower and we are not seeing it. That AMPS 156 on 7/9 does suggest he dropped lower overnight.
Would like to see a ketone test when you are successful..

Oh, that’s a shame about it being too much for her. I hope she will change her mind- but hopefully Laurie will be able to come. She sounds great I guess a few weeks of no ear pricks makes a difference in being able to get blood. Have the kitties been sleeping with you?

Yes and no. I was trying to keep them away from me last week as I was really sick and I was petrified one of them might pick it up. So they would wait till I fell asleep and then sneak to the end of the bed. Now as its been more than 5 days I have let them back in as usual.

Not sure about the increase/decrease as I think this is due to what hes's been eating and when he's been eating it. I think that during the night he's in with me with a noise machine and not hearing the food click up so is eating closer to breakfast which is giving an inflated BG reading in the morning.
Afternoon numbers are down but again I have been giving him 10% carb as I don't think I could have physically looked after him last week if something went wrong. This nis the first time in my entire life I wished I did not have animals as I could hardly get out of bed let alone look after myself. My family wanted me to go to the hospital but I refused mainly because of Kaz and his injections. Luckily I am now improving although I still do not feel well I'm just able to function a bit more.

Lets give Kaz at least a few days so I can get a more accurate reading on where he truly stands.

Hi Bron

I was really hoping that Kaz's numbers would continue on the downward slope as they were doing prior to my trip. It's a bit upsetting seeing his numbers go back into the pinks even though he's on 0% carb food.
I know this is a strike for Kaz and puts remission at a much lower probability now which is sad for both of us.

I think Kaz needs to go back up to 2 units but I wanted to confirm this with you before adjusting as I assume this is really my only option.
I obviously gave him the 1.75 units this evening but can start back up at 2 units tomorrow morning.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks Claire

Hi Claire! His spreadsheet really looks like he needs that increase. I would increase if Kaz were my cat. I know that Bron will come along in a bit and that will make you feel better.

He was on vacation food while I was away but his dose actually reduced while I was away so I was hoping when he went back to the 0-5% carb food it would even out and actually reduce again.
However I also know that extreme heat can cause diabetic people to become more dehydrated and cause an elevation in the BG levels. I would assume that this is the same for cats.
The temp over here right now is 90+ every day.
I have an A/C in the bedroom which runs 24 hours for Kaz. However he does not always stay in the bedroom and I find him sprawled out on the Livingroom rug fast asleep in hot areas quite a bit. My brand new AC in the living room had a fault which I got refunded for but now I have been having issues getting a replacement.

I think if I can get the temp down this may also help or get him to sleep in the cool room.

Me too I just forked out on a new portable AC for the living room so hoping that will also help.
Tell me about this portable AC unit. Do they work well? We have central air conditioning (I am surprised you don’t have it - even in Massachusetts because it does get hot) but I have been thinking about getting a portable unit for our garage where my husband and son like to work/tinker around, etc. I am wondering how they work. What happens to the moisture that will be drawn out pf the warm/hot air? Where does it drain/go?

I've used one of those portable units and it required a nearby window for a the hot air and moisture to be sent outside via a big accordion-like tube

So I have a Honeywell portable AC in my bedroom and its the best thing I ever bought as it does not need to be drained. Had it two years now and its been running non stop since I left for my UK trip. As this unit was so fantastic I bought a second one however the unit I bought was now discontinued and a new model took its place. This unit looked identical to the old unit with one difference it needed to be drained every half hour even on the AC setting. They claim the item malfunctioned but I did some research on line and this seems like a constant issue with the newer model.
So I have just bought another one from Delongi as this model seemed to have fantastic reviews and states it never needs draining on the AC mode.
The models I buy do 700sf footage but as I said the first one is fantastic.

I currently live in a condo and there is no central air. Half the people I know have central air rest don't. I think most new houses are built with it and if people can afford it when they buy a house they put it in. Where I am looking to buy in MA most houses do not have central air but this along with a heated driveway are my first two adds.

Hey Hendrick I keep meaning to send you an email. I have your spreadsheet saved on my computer and I was following your progress daily. I was so happy to see that your kitty is OTJ. This must be great news for both of you.

thanks Claire!! It is amazing, I won't pretend it isn't. So many months of hard work and hand-wringing paid off in the end, all thanks to people like Suzanne and Bron and many more.

Hi Bron
Kaz had a green today but I think this was a combination of the terrible heat we have been having and not wanting to eat his food due to the heat.
Last couple days he has not been eating well but this is not unusual behavior he's always like this when he gets hot. When I'm home I can monitor him and I make sure he stays in the cool areas but when I am not home im not sure he's doing this.
I can drop his insulin by .25 as he went into green but not sure it's really called for due to the reason why.
I was actually going to email to see if I should be increasing it again?

Hi Bron

I don't think your up yet but having a slight issue with Kaz. I ended up getting home really late this evening. When I got home I discovered that Kaz must have had a fur ball as his second meal opened and so threw up. It would appear that he did not eat any of the second meal maybe some of the first meal that had not totally been digested due to the fur ball also came up.
By time I got home it was far too late to give him another meal and he seemed fine and energetic so I waited 35 mins till it was time for his BG test for the evening dose.
Now his number was 107 I waited 10 minutes and tested again but the number only came up by two points to 109.
I am now at the point where I have to feed him if I'm going to give insulin.
I have drawn up 1 unit versus 2 which I think maybe too much based on the 109 number???? I'm contemplating 1.25 or 1.5 as I am home and can monitor the rest of his meals and test till around 11pm. I know he's going to eat but I am uncertain as to whether the dose I am considering is dangerous.
I only have about 10 minutes till my window starts to shut.
If I don't hear I'll give the 1 unit but maybe you could make a suggestion here if this happens again.
He's not sick, he is eating and the low number is due to the fur ball and throwing up. He never has two fur balls in the same day and it would probably be another week if it does happen again but its usually longer as he's brushed regularly.

Hi Claire. I do not think it is dangerous to shoot the full dose if you can monitor for the next five hours (until 11). You think the low preshot is because of the vomiting and lack of food this afternoon?

In any event, I would not reduce the dose so low - to only one unit.

Sorry I didn't see the response and I was worried to over shoot so I did only give him 1 unit.
Going to retest in about half hour at least next time I will know. The number was so close to the green that it worried me and I knew he hadn't really eaten and did not want a false reading from the food and then have him drop really low.

It’s all okay. Tomorrow is another day. And I hope he ate well tonight.

Yes. The two unit depot will dominate the first half of his cycle tonight - keeping his numbers lower. I’m happy you are with him taking such good care of him.
