Good thought on the antibiotics and his appetite. It can kill the good tummy flora. Maybe some probiotics would help, given two hours apart from the AB.

At 10 pounds, you could easily give Mac a 1/4 of that 8 mg ondansetron, if needed.

Mac is bouncing from that green last night, you can lay off the tests until PMPS now.

He is 10lbs now. Yes, he will eat and drink but only smaller amounts like maybe a sixth of a 3oz can at a time. I guess at the vet they were only feeding a can and dry twice a day (that's what they recommended to me) and he was ravenous with his eating. Here he eats more frequently but smaller amounts. I am wondering if the antibiotics could be contributing to his smaller appetite as I know they make me feel nauseous sometimes, or if it's just that I'm feeding more frequently so he eats less. The vet also said he was pretty active there, but given his reaction to being caged I'm wondering if it was just stress and now that he's home he needs his sleep to recover. Of course I worry about the DKA happening again so I'm checking him all the time to make sure he's OK. But I also worry that I'm worrying for nothing too. :/

He did just have a good pee (out of the litter box but not unusual for him) and ate a little and drank a bit.

Didn’t you say his white count was elevated when they did bloodwork? Or am I confusing him with someone else? If so, sorry. What antibiotic is he getting? Some are more known to cause inappetance than others.

Ondansetron Dosage Amount

A commonly used dose on Tanya's Support Group is 1 mg each time it is given, so one pill contains four doses. This ties in with Pet Place, which mentions that the usual dose for cats is 0.11mg per pound bodyweight, i.e. 1.1mg for a 10 lb (4.5kg) cat, given 2-3 times a day.



Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook mentions an empiric dose of 0.5mg per kg bodyweight twice daily, so a 10 lb (4.5kg) cat would be given 2.25mg, so a higher dose.



Oral, subcutaneous and intravenous pharmacokinetics of ondansetron in healthy cats (2014) Quimby JM, Lake RC, Hansen RJ, Lunghofer PJ & Gustafson DL Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics 37(4) pp348–353 states that "twice daily administration at 0.5 mg/kg is likely inadequate to maintain serum concentrations within the therapeutic range; higher or more frequent doses may be needed." It further states that "the postulated therapeutic range - extrapolated from a previously published pharmacodynamic study - may not be accurate particularly if applied to repeated administration for chronic disease states."

Mac was diagnosedwith DKA, pancreatitis and diabetes all at once, it all came on so suddenly and he was at death's door with high kidney, WBC and liver levels. Those all came down by discharge.

Yes. To answer my own question. I see from your post excerpted above that his white count was high. Hence the antibiotics were prescribed. This happened with my cat when he went DKA. Very high WBC and high fever. He had many antibiotics via IV as well as other meds for a week to deal with the DKA. He was holding his own before the infection. It’s what put him over the edge into DKA.

Yep, that's correct. They sent us home with amoxicillin. I can't remember exactly what his WBC was but according to my regular vet it was sky high.

Thanks for the info on the anti nausea/appetite stuff. Luckily, he is eating more tonight than earlier today and drinking as well. It seems like he may be more of a late afternoon/evening eater. I'm still going to hang on to the Zofran I have in case he needs a small dose of it.

Mac's preshot number tonight was 442. Gave 2.5 units and let him decide how much food he wants, he ate a good bit. Butters was at 303 so I gave him his usual 2.25 and a meal. Butters was at 0.2 ketones as well so all good there.
