Merlin got into a small amount of dry food before we got up. It’s shoot time and I dont know how long ago he ate it. He hasn’t been low PS for a really long time, though, so should we shoot anyway? And should we feed???

Ok thanks! He still ate a full breakfast of 4! We delayed by 15 minutes, though. I dont suppose there will be much steering needed for a while. Thanksgiving day for Merlin.

Only advice I can give is to get rid of all dry food out of the house because they will track it down!
I am in the process of weaning my last cat off the stuff (I have two more than Merlin). She would rather starve to death than eat the meat out of a bowl of wet food. She is an expert at extracting all of the moisture out of the chunks. She also hates pate or anything like real food. She’s a stubborn little pill. I went cold turkey with her in the beginning of Merlin’s diagnosis, but she refused to eat anything else. I have read the info about getting them off the stuff and Ive yet to find anything that works. Im slowly decreasing the amount of dry I give her, but she still refuses anything but wet food “gravy.” At least its lc…

Ouch, you little sneak Merlin.:(
It just goes to show how a small amount of dry food can have a major affect their BG.

Oh that cat! It is amazing how a small amount of kibble can send them soaring. You did the right thing to shoot this morning because he hasn’t been in really low numbers on this dose so it was perfectly safe.

Thanks, Suzanne. Isn’t it funny how he ended up getting down to the same numbers (even a little lower than) he has been at for a few days at this time?

Good to hear that Merlin's seeming normal after his donut buffet! I haven't found Dr. Elsey's in an actual store yet so have been ordering it via Amazon. Not sure if they would have it in your area. My non-sugar cat has transitioned fully to it and seems to dig it.

I have only ever been able to order DrE’s online ( im in california)

Have you checked out the UK Cat Food List. Although not recommended for Merlin, towards the bottom of the list are a couple dry food options that are lower carb you could feed your other kitty, and it wouldn't be quite so bad if Merlin stole some.

At this point in your journey, you only need to worry about him snacking in the couple hours before shot time if he's in lower numbers. You don't want to shoot a food influenced number if he might be too low to shoot without that food influence. In higher numbers, just shoot!

I spent a while this morning searching for lower carb dry food. Trouble is, many foods arent available in Ireland, and I have had appalling luck with the postal service here. I did order some from zooplus to try. Oona is so stubborn she is even picky about dry food, so we will see. I ordered Fortiflora to sprinkle on wet food, but she is also pretty smart, so I dont think it will fool her into eating it. I so want to get her off that crappy high carb stuff.
