Is Merlin changing his pattern now? Is this because of the new higher carb meal and +1 snack? Is this going to last, or is it just a whim? Will this guy ever be pinned down into a manageable schedule that doesn’t leave me frazzled? How will this all turn out and HOW LONG will it be? Will I have to keep cancelling my morning doctor’s appointments eternally?Nobody knows. How could we?

Jill, Merlin has been on insulin for less than 3 weeks. Most cats take a lot longer to start coming down into green or even blue numbers.
Yes he has been a bit of a diver….but some cats are…my Sheba was.
We don’t have a crystal ball….I wish I did….I would make millions;).
I can’t tell you what Merlin is going to do but I can tell you that insulin is not a medication like an antibiotic and you give it and it cures everything. Insulin is a hormone and it takes time for a cat to get used to it. Some cats do it more quickly than others.
I think I can say with some certainty that the biggest thing every caregivers learns here is patience.
Merlin is starting to give you some lower preshots. you should grab them and shot them as that will get him into lower numbers and more regulated. Have a look at a few SS. Here is Hendricks. He is just about to do an off the juice trial

95@+2.5. Thats 36 in half an hour. I think maybe not feed. Dont want to cause a bounce, but want the green. Once in green, we can feed him a little lc, 1.9.

The +1 was a food bump which most cats or a lot of cats have and it is because food has been fed and the BG raises because of that. That is why we say don’t feed for the 2 hours preshot……especially when you are new, as you don’t know how much the food will influence the BG, and you want to make sure the pre shot is not food influenced and it is safe to shoot.

Is 8 g (a large spoon) the amount of food I should be feeding him for snacks? He would love to have a little more lc than he is getting in a helping when he is in green sometimes, maybe 10 g?

We will test at +4 and then go hourly. He is going up from the 63 now, but we need to feed him to keep him in the green. Feed at the scheduled +4 very lc, 1.9.
You don’t have to feed him to keep him in the green. You have just fed him. That should last a while. We feed to stop them dropping too low and to be able to surf in the green. If we overfeed, we will send them back into the blue. The longer he can stay in the green the better it is for his pancreas and is getting him used to the normal numbers again and hopefully reduce the bouncing……

Actually, we are coming up on +4, and he just ate. Maybe wait til +5 to feed the scheduled snack.
Yes I think that’s a good idea.

Did you divide the main meal and the snacks up as part of the allocated food?
What type of spoon?

I have a hard time telling what a bounce looks like. To me, last night looked like a longer yellow dropping into blue, like it should. Like its all happening as it should, but on a higher BG level than is ideal. I thought bouncing just kind of looked random and there would be no response to insulin.

Yes. We weigh the food. It’s always 8 g, these days. A rounded teaspoon. But we could feed more, if the food he has had in that cycle doesn’t total the allocated amount? Sometimes we skip the second helping snack.

I think for snacks you could give a bit more. It is given routinely and is part of every cycle.
But for when you are giving some food to raise the BG we usually say a teaspoon.
The first scheduled +1 is kind of both, I think. I guess stick to 8 g for that. The +4 is more flexible then.

Going to bed and setting a timer for two hours. I’m confused about what is too low to shoot in the morning… I thought it was 200? Ok.. Might be asking questions early in the morning. Hope not. Goodnight!
