3-year FD Anniversary Post

Good morning everyone!
It has been absolute ages since I've posted, so I imagine most of you will not know me, but I had to post for my buddy Lou's 5-year FD anniversary! Lou almost couldn't be doing better. He has actually made it down to 0.75u currently and is still beautifully regulated on Levemir. Since he kept bouncing and rejecting reductions, we played around with fat doses within the last year, and it seems to have helped him ease into some of these lower doses. I certainly hope he can keep it up, although I have no idea what I'd do if he goes much lower. Learn to deal with it and throw a party I reckon, haha! :joyful: After all of the ups and downs, I am so pleased with how well he is doing. He has a checkup next week, but I'm guessing the vet will be happy as well. You can always tell when he is healthy because his coat gets so soft and smooth and just luxurious. Gosh I love that rascal!

Our civvie Bella is still small, but still kicking. She was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) a couple of years ago, but while she's light, she is holding steady on her enzymes and B12 injections. Unfortunately, either due to her EPI or her age (or both), her anxiety has spiraled out of control. She has gone manic at times, pulling out tufts of her hair, and crying like she's dying before every meal. The vet was worried about giving her anti-anxiety medication with the EPI, although only because it wasn't directly mentioned? She gave her this supplement that can calm, and it worked for perhaps a week before Bella went back to tugging out her hair. The vet hadn't wanted to switch her because technically the meds were working. Anywhoo, I am bringing them both in for their annual physical next week, so I'll be demanding proper anti-anxiety meds. She needs to be able to calm down, as she has enough other stuff going on without needing to worry about food and the attention Lou gets (BG testing, etc.).

As for me, it has been a crazy last few years. I am a medical laboratory technician and I work in a lab. As you can imagine, the last couple of years have been a roller coaster. I have been trying to hang on, but it has been exhausting. Now that the worst is over and I have gotten some help in the lab, I have decided to go back to school to get my 4-year degree in the same field. This will open up some departments and management options to me, so I feel like it's worth the hassle.

I hope you all are doing well and that your kitties are swimming beautifully while staying away from sharks! Here's hoping Lou can continue working that insulin like a pro, and I hope to see you back here in another 5 years! :cat: Many hugs to you all my FD friends! Keep dancing! :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

No! How awesome and exciting! I'm going to go read all about him! :bighug:

Congrats on Lou's good health! 5 years!! You are a good mama to him and to Bella as well. I was glad I caught your condo. I am not on very often so it's always great to see members from years ago! :bighug::) Good luck with school! I could never do more schooling. I had enough. :joyful:

What a wonderful update! Happy anniversary! Your excellent care has kept Lou nice and healthy.

It's great to see an update. I'm glad you posted. It's great when we can see how well they are doing with years of FD. I hope you can get the help you need for Bella. Sending prayers.

Happy Annifursary Loudogg!

His SS looks pretty. :D I ended up doing smaller reductions too, seemed to hold better. What are you using for reduction criteria. There is the one week in mostly green option.

For newbies, Lou is a bit more complicated with a secondary condition, insulin auto antibodies. It means Amanda has had to experiment to find what works for dosing for her guy. But look at how well he’s doing. Cats can do well, even if diabetic for longer.

Best of luck in your schooling Amanda. Those of you who are medical workers have been heroes these last couple years. :bighug:

Hiya Wendy! It's so good to see you, and thank you! In general, we follow the reduce after one time under 40 rule. When I started experimenting with fat doses, I would reduce the fat part if he was in the 40s once, but then he started not accepting those as well, so we yo-yo'd a bit. So only last month I tried reducing him by only the fat part of the dose instead of the full 0.25u, and that seemed to hold better. Then we went back to the standard once under 40 reduction rule.

We have kind of gotten to the point in this dance where I can tell if Lou is feeling the insulin or not, and he's on a good stretch at the moment. I completely forgot about the reduce after one week in greens. Looking back, I could have reduced him a bit earlier, but I've gotten so used to making him earn his reductions to stop him from needing to go right back up in dose. I'll try to keep it in mind while he's doing well here. You never know, he could pull a China! ;)

Hi there, I'm a n00b so not familiar with Lou's story but thank you for posting, it is good to see a cat can have a great quality of life with FD, for years and years.

Lou is exceedingly cute I love the picture in your profile!
