05/27 Merlin PMPS 24.4(439), 21.7(391)@+1,17.0(306)@+2,17.9(322)@+3

It will be challenging feeding him lower carb so often. I cant find an lc pate in the grocery stores. All the lc foods we have are chunky and he just likes to lick the jelly off. I tried to change them into pates in the food processor, but he and the other two cats practically ran away from that. I need to shop in more pet stores.
Jill, it's a bit late today now but i have found this at a local pet shop near you in Cork. Merlin seems to like Canagan food.
https://www.petstop.ie/collections/cat-cat-food-wet-cat-food/products/canagan-cat-pouch-multi-pack
free run chicken (3.1% carbs)
chicken and turkey (3.9% carbs)
Chicken and Duck (9.2% carbs)
Chicken & Salmon (7.5% carbs)
A mixture of low carb and higher end low carb foods in the box.

Thanks, Tee! I think that’s where we got the recent single cans! It’s over near the new vets, so we will be over at some point. Though the vet hasn’t contacted me since I told her to cancel the order for a vial…
I just put my present collection of food in carb order instead of taking a nap. We’re supposed to use lower carb food tonight, but I forgot to ask the number of carbs to aim for. I seem to be missing the 3-5 range, so I hope that’s not needed.

Tesco sell Sheba Tray Classics in Terrine, Chicken that's 3.2% carbs.
Also Petstop sell Carnilove 100 gram tins that are low in carbs ranging from 1.9% to 4.4% carbs.

Yes. We were going to try to do a little lower carb food tonight, but if you can't get it then we will just work around it. I've been thinking about what we may want to do tonight for feeding.

I am thinking that maybe we can try a little less food and maybe waiting a little longer to start the feeding. What time (+ hour) did you first give the extra spoon (after breakfast). Did you start it at +1? or +1.5? Depending on the numbers, we can try less food (although if the spoons were already really small that might be pointless). Maybe we should just wait and extra half hour to start the supplemental feeding? It's kind of a guessing game. If you do have lower carb food on hand, we'll try that. If not, we will try it on a different day.

The first spoonful was at 11, which was just a short while after breakfast. John is looking for some LC food at the store. Shall we do the shoot at 10 tonight? Half an hour early? No pub. Too tired. Trying to sleep, but I’m kind of wired.

Okay, so that was about a half an hour after he ate and you shot. So we can delay it a bit tonight. Maybe he will find some lower carb stuff. Try to relax.

Hi guys! Which food should be his starter, and how much? 1.9, 2.9, or 5.7? The 5.7 is the pate, so he may be more likely to eat it in spoonfuls than the other two, which are chunks. But it is higher. I’m a little conflicted about this decision… I don’t want to choose a food later that he doesn’t truly eat. He was doing well with the pate spoonfuls today, but it was 8.5.

Well then…. I don’t know.

I wonder too. I’d like to say a bounce but he didn’t go that low today. A delayed bounce from yesterday? Sometimes they do take a while.

So is this how it works, Suzanne? Were figuring out the amount of food he needs and how regularly to get him low and steady and then let him sit in that dosage until his body gets used to it and sort of overrides it. At that point, we raise the dose and do it all over again?

Sort of. We are right now just trying to get him into better numbers on .25 units while still keeping him safe. What we hope will happen is that he spends most of his time in the good numbers so that his pancreas can heal. Cats insulin needs to change over time and sometimes they go up and sometimes they go down. It's the sugar dance. So we adjust upward only if we see that a particular dose isn't keeping him in good, yet safe numbers. That's why doses are based upon nadir numbers and not pre-shot numbers (it keeps them safe.) We obviously adjust downward if the dose is taking them too low. So the protocols for dosing have these safety measures built into them.

And yes, right now we want to see how to feed him to keep him from dropping too hard and fast -- and how not to shorten the duration of the insulin with too much food. If we can do this, then we hope he can get along pretty well on this .25 dose. He's definitely new to this and I think his body will adjust to it.

I guess that drop will start happening at 2 or 2.5…

Ivy is worried about two things: she might not have gotten enough into the syringe tonight and she may have gotten too little in this morning. It’s such a hard thing to measure it. We all checked, but what do we know? I found a picture that we are all looking at now and wondering. But this makes it scary for next time if we give slightly more…

I do understand this. But at least at this dose, we can keep him safe.

You may want to buy some digital calipers to measure the tiny doses.
