Crunching Sound When Eating

We are wondering if anyone has every encountered this?

The noise/crunching started a few weeks ago, after his diagnosis. Vet has checked his mouth a couple of times and said that outside of some tartar build up, she doesn't see anything abnormal.

He only eats wet food and only does it when he eats. It seems to start at the midpoint of his meal and continues until he doesn't want to eat anymore. It does not happen outside of eating, he doesn't try to mess with his mouth/jaw at all - either while eating or other times during the day.

Thanks - Stacey

wow that is really odd. It sounds for all the world like he is crunching up dry food kibble, even sort of turning his head sideways like they do. But I think Bron might be on to something, teeth on teeth is about the only explanation

That is one of the classic signs of nausea. My cats with IBD/SCL did this. Do you know why your kitty would be nauseated? Pancreatitis? (I saw this in your signature.) How is his appetite. It seems like he's munching away. When my Maverick did this he still ate... but he did make what I called that tooth grinding sound. My Beauty did it as well.

How is his appetite? Does he ever go up to food and sniff it and walk away? Do you have to coax him to eat? Poor baby. If he is nauseated, you should ask the vet to prescribe you Ondansetron tablets (mini melts - orally dissolving tablets - very small but just pill as normal and don't try to dissolve in kitty's mouth). It is the most effective anti-nausea medication. See if you can find the cause of the nausea. I assume you had labs done in January at diagnosis? Have you attached them to you spreadsheet? (I will look). IF he has pancreatitis you will need most likely to give fluids, pain medication and cerenia and ondansetron.

BTW, the turning of the head to the side while making that noise is EXACTLY what my Maverick and Beauty did when nauseated. And that grinding. I was looking on this forum to check up on another kitty, but when I saw your thread title, I immediately clicked on it to watch the video. I hope your kitty will feel better soon.

Have you been testing him for ketones? I'm concerned. I hope your vet on Thursday (new vet?) will listen. Vetsulin is not a good insulin for cats. I used it. Please test for ketones. Don't let him go into ketoacidosis. Has he been vomiting? Has he been checked for an infection? I'm sorry to ask so many questions. I am just very concerned for your baby. He goes to the vet tomorrow so I will keep you in my thoughts for that vet visit! HUGS!!!

Hey - sorry, i did not get any alerts about replies to this thread.

First off, thank you so much for your response! And thank you for the explanation. We tried looking it up online and found that they grind their teeth when they are in pain but there was not a lot of information about it. Our vet had no idea what is was and why he was doing it. We will show the video to the new vet tomorrow. He's not doing it as bad now, this was at its worst.

I will answer as many of your questions as i can:

Do you know why your kitty would be nauseated? Not sure but it could be pancreatitis

Pancreatitis? (I saw this in your signature.) Yes. He was diagnosed with pancreatitis but only with the blood test. The vet said it's very hard to diagnose and we've spoken to another vet who said she goes off of symptoms a lot of times vs the blood test. He was on zeniquin (antibiotic), cerenia, mirazapine and fluid. at this point, he is only on fluids and we give him cerenia, as needed. he took a couple of doses of mirazapine and regained his appetite very quickly, so we stopped.

How is his appetite? it's good. he's eating the meals we give him, minus maybe a teaspoon each meal. tonite, we introduced a tablespoon of a new food and he went nuts for it.

Does he ever go up to food and sniff it and walk away? He did before he was diagnosed but has been eating ever since.

Do you have to coax him to eat? no, not really. he more plays games with me, so to speak. he eats and then walks away and i fix the food in his bowl and bring him back and he eats again. this goes on a few time but he really eats most of his plate at each meal.

I assume you had labs done in January at diagnosis? Have you attached them to you spreadsheet? (I will look). we did full labs but i have to add them to my sheet - as i am sure you understand, life has been a bit crazy since his diagnosis and we are mainly reading, researching and for a while running back and forth to the vet...and work full time.

If he has pancreatitis you will need most likely to give fluids, pain medication and cerenia and ondansetron. - We don't have a pain med for him. Thankfully, he has never thrown up nor had diarrhea. He has gotten constipated, so we've been giving him miralax in his food.

Have you been testing him for ketones? Yes, daily! He had ketones when first diagnosed and they went away. We've mainly gotten negative results with occasionally trace results.

We have a vet appt with a new vet tomorrow. We are nervous. We've had bad experiences with vets and have used our currently one for a while but neither of our cats had an issue like this. she has not been helpful during any of this. Getting information and a plan from her has been impossible and she won't talk about food, since we refuse to feed Buddy prescription food.

Thank you again for all your kind words and questions. Appreciate it, the thoughts and hugs sooooo much!! - stace

I would also ask about swapping to a better insulin for cats such as Lantus or Prozinc. Vetsulin is not a good cat insulin at all.
Let us know how you get on please
I definitely agree about switching insulin (as I said yesterday.). It is not a good insulin for cats. I think my vet started us on it because it was the cheapest that she knew of and that she had dogs using it.

Hey @Suzanne & Darcy - Did the crunching sound eventually stop for your cat? He seems to overall be doing better but still crunching when he eats. The new vet checked it out as well and saw no issues. He only does it when he eats, never rubs his mouth with his paw and it doesn't happen the entire time he eats. Just so confused over it - could it be weight loss/muscle weakness maybe?

Well yes. The crunching sounds did stop when my cat was put on Prednisolone. His intestines were hurting him (IBD) and so the pred made him feel so much better. Pain, nausea and tooth problems (which your vet has apparently ruled out) can cause it.

Darn, that message was sent before I was finished.
I am still wondering if you had blood work done? I don’t see any on your labs tab on the spreadsheet. High phosphorus can cause tooth grinding as well. Other causes can be excess stomach acid and dehydration.
What did the new vet say?

i added blood work to his chart.

his phosphorus is not high. the second vet didn't see anything wrong with his teeth either.....we are wondering if it is maybe due to muscle loss, maybe.

His pancreatitis seems to have settled down, as he is not showing symptoms anymore. also, his BG was the lowest we've gotten so far today. The new vet gave us a script for Lantus but we torn as to whether we should switch right now. He felt the doses of Vetsulin have been really low and we were not instructed to really increase. He left it up to us but recommended since we already started vetsulin to increase the doses before we decide what to do. We upped it to 2.5 Thursday pm and today we got the lowest reading yet and he seems to be doing better over all. more energy, more social, and just as sweet as he always is. ❤️

We had a video chat with a Chewy.com vet recently and we are going to send her the video as well. She was really amazing and may have some insight.

The labs you shared look very good. I'm just trying to think of any possible reason why he would be doing it! Those are all of the conventional reasons. I hope it will go away.

I'm very glad to hear that Buddy seems to be feeling better. That's really important and I know it makes you happy :-) You may get some better nadirs on Vetsulin, but I would be surprised if you got much longevity out of it. I hope he won't have wild BG swings. Good job starting testing! It would be great if you could get the PMPS tests in there too so you can see not only where he begins in a cycle but where he ends up after 12 hours. It's important before giving any insulin to find out if it is even safe to shoot. Maybe his tooth grinding will stop too, if he gets to feeling better. Good to know about the Chewy vets. I haven't used their service yet. Thanks!
