3/7 TAZ Morning Reading-271, +3-HI, +5-468

Taz had a day of blues yesterday, then had to stop eating before midnight last night for his dental today. He was stressing out this morning because he wanted to eat, and I had to take a +11 instead of a AMPS at his normal time this morning. I expected his glucose to be higher because he was begging to eat for a couple of hours before I tested him.

I skipped his morning insulin because he was due for it after we dropped him off at the vet. Not to mention, I was worried about him having it with no food in his system. They took his glucose twice, his +3 was HI (over 500 on their machine) and his +5 was 468. We'll be leaving to go pick him up in about 30 minutes. I'm so excited to get him back home!

He had quite a bit of tarter and gingivitis, two teeth removed (they were breaking), and a mole on in his lip was removed to biopsy. They said that he had 5 missing teeth (1 was removed years ago) and 2 teeth that were at the gum line but missing the crown of the teeth. Poor guy. :(

Aww poor Taz! Give him a couple days and he will be doing tons better. My civvie had surgery last fall and it took her about a day and half and she was back to her normal self.

They gave us liquid amoxicillin, but it's the pink (bubblegum?) kind. They didn't have pills. In your experience, is there a lot of sugar in this? He has to be on it for 7 days.

I've never had that for the cats...we had liquid once but it was white... that I cannot answer

Does it actually smell and taste like the pink stuff we used to get as kids?

See above. It contains sucrose (sugar). I’ve had a few friends with diabetic cats who were given this for their cats and it really spiked their BG (to be expected).

Thank you everyone. I assumed it had sugar and I even asked the tech because I was worried about sugar. She said they didn't have pills. So what do I do now? I have fishmox pills that we usually give our cats and dogs, but i don't know if that would be ok in this case. :(

He should be on Clindamycin anyway. That is the drug of choice for any mouth/oral bacteria. I was very surprised when you said they gave you amoxicillin. Fish mox is just amoxicillin, so if you know the correct dose for Taz, which it sounds like you do, you could give it.

I don't know why he chose amoxicillin, but I'm giving fishmox because I don't feel comfortable giving sugar to Taz. I got a copy of his bloodwork yesterday and his test for pancreatitis was really high. So I'm not going to add more sugar to the mix and make the pancreas try to work harder. I am so stressed and I'm not sleeping well. He's hurting really bad today, which makes me feel horrible. Not to mention, his mouth must be killing him and we're having to mess with it to give him meds. :(

He will be ok sweetie give him the pain meds and call vet about the clindamycin that's what they gave my civvie works great! Add a little extra water to his food too to make it easy to lap up so he will eat for you :bighug::bighug:

When you get a chance start a new thread for today and also put his bloodwork numbers into the labs tab of your ss so other members can take a look and chime in if they see something:)

And you can’t get the Bupe in him? You might want to ask the vet to give him a shot of Simbadol which is a 24 hour Buprenorphine injection - if you can’t get near his mouth. There’s also a newly approved three day Bupe shot, but he may just need one day to get over the hump. I feel so sorry for him.
If he really has pancreatitis that can be painful too.

Unfortunately I did have to go to work today, but I think it was a good thing because I wasn't hovering over Taz all day. He's in a whole lot of pain. We're giving him bupe for his mouth pain, but he's showing signs of another pancreas flare up (I don't know that it ever went away). He's eating so far but you can tell he's miserable and every time I go near him, he walks away. He doesn't want us near him at all. :(

I updated his bloodwork on his SS, as well as possible. I was confused about some of it and didn't know how to push other things further down the list without erasing them. I'll start a new thread later when I get a chance.

And for the pancreatitis: fluids, pain meds that you are already doing, Cerenia (have any?) or Ondansetron ? What else did you do last time?

That's what we've done the last two timed that he's acted off. We've given pain meds, cerenia, and syringe fed when needed. :(
Do you know how to do sub-q fluids? It would be beneficial. But you'd need to get your vet to show you how and get some supplies. Did you post his bloodwork. I was trying to take a look at it.

Hang in there! You are a great cat mama!

I updated his bloodwork in the labs area. I hope I did it correctly. My vet won't give sub fluids because he doesn't think they're needed. I have experience giving then because we had two KD kitties in the past.

Too bad you still don't have supplies. I keep needles and lactated ringers solution around the house all the time. That way if I need them I have them and don't have to go begging to the vet for them (or pay their higher prices!) Of course, I always do need to make sure - if fluids are going to be given on a more regular basis - that the cat is cleared for that (heart.)

Funny you mention that, I do still have some fluids but they expired in 2018 I believe. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away, even though I don't know if they're still ok to use or not. I have the tubing and needles though.

It’s a bad pancreatitis flare. Max was 50+ sometimes as well. While the number doesn’t always mean it’s a bad flare, when that high they generally feel crappy. Poor Taz. I hope he feels better soon.

Unfortunately, where I live at least, lactated ringers solution is obtainable only via prescription!
