Hello wonderful cat-care-givers!

I have a general question about preventing heart disease, diabetes, and CKD.

I've had two cats (Cotten & Q-Tip) prior to the three (Two-Two my sugarcat, and Rocky & Niko 10 mo. kittens) that I have now. While Cotten & Q lived until 16-19 y/o they both had either heart disease or CKD and now Two has FD.

Do you all think the best prevention is brushing teeth & yearly deep clean at the Vet, feeding low carb (?), and getting exercise? I assume because we are mammals we all need these things to be healthy!

Does anyone have any resources about prevention and what foods to feed? I only buy "grain free" but now that I have a sugarcat I realize that all grain free DOES NOT mean low carb! I only do Wet with one serving of a small amt. of grain free dry b/c I understand it is good for their teeth.

Is taking them to the vet to get their teeth cleaned and under general bad to do every year? Is the stress from this worse then plaque build up? I plan on training my kittens to let me brush their teeth so wish me luck.

Anyway, thanks in advance!!

If you can get your kittens used to brushing their teeth that's great
Tyler never let me do that
My vet said I can just get a gauze pad and use that , that he let's me do.
But I do take him every 6 months to get his teeth checked.
Feeding dry food is a myth about keeping their teeth clean, I learned that a long time ago. That's all Tyler ate before he was diagnosed with diabetes

I gave you a list of low carb/ low phosphorus foods on your introduction the Weruva foods for Two-Two since he has CKD

I am not sure if you can feed it to your 10 month old kittens
I'll tag a few members about this

This is the toothbrush I ordered and it comes with a sample tooth paste, I see some members here use this toothpaste on their diabetic cats

What is C.E.T. Cat Toothbrush?
C.E.T. Cat Toothbrush is specially designed for the feline mouth. The brush is soft, gentle, and easy to use. Long, soft bristles with a pointed tuft make it possible to brush a cat's hard-to-reach back teeth. Also contains a trial packet ofC.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste

Actually, you can do just as good if you just use plain old water with cotton gauze. It's not necessary to use toothpaste at all.

I just did a search on our site and found this posted by a member
Here is what she said
skip the toothpaste. i use a dab of semi solid cold pressed coconut oil with a baby soft washcloth on the cats that will not beat me up 2-3 times a week and have never had a cat need dental cleanings/etc.. there is no carbs-glycerin/etc like pet toothpastes have, just one ingredient that works better than toothpastes IMO. the oil helps cloth glide along their gums better, no nasty flavor and from personal experience (i make my own toothpaste with coconut oil), it dislodges food between teeth ten folds better than toothpastes (i rarely have to floss). it also helps food not stick to teeth as easily too, plus it has antibacterial benefits.

WOW, thanks so much! I will look into all of this :) You are the best!
You're welcome, I'm not sure about the weruva food for kittens, They say kittens need more calories, I think the weruva food I listed are too low in calories for kittens

Maybe the members I tagged will have another suggestion for kittens since you want to one that's low carb and low phosphorus

I found this that a member posted about it
I watched this video. Basically I gradually increased the intensity of my attention to his mouth. I started sticking my finger in his mouth while I was petting him, then letting him sniff the toothpaste, rubbing toothpaste on his gums, using gauze to rub toothpaste, using a toothbrush when he’d let me,
