I took Taz's reading at +5.5 and it was 104. I syringe fed him about 30ccs because he didn't eat much for dinner and didn't eat anything after we went to bed. You can tell he's feeling uncomfortable because he's being careful with how he lays down (pancreatitis) and isn't purring much. At +7 it's 72. Do you think it will continue to drop or should we start seeing a rise?

Ok thank you. I've gotten 1 hour of sleep tonight (it's 3am). I'm exhausted. I had expected his number to rise a bit after feeding him, but not to drop even more 90 minutes later. Should we test hourly until we see it start to rise? And with lantus, could it begin to rise and then fall again?

It's too early to predict Taz's numbers. You don't have enough data. With time you should have a better understanding of how his numbers might likely be. Though they still throw the occasional curve ball. In some cycles - especially where they clear a bounce - the numbers can keep heading down till the end of the cycle.

I can understand how exhausted you are. You can always feed a little higher carb and abort the cycle. That is, cause his numbers to go up. Carbs can apply the brakes on insulin action.

Is Taz taking any pain medication for his pancreatitis?

Is Taz taking any pain medication for his pancreatitis?

He is currently on Bupe but getting ready to switch to another one.

He's becoming very standoffish. He isn't liking the ear pricking, pill-ing, and force feeding. I'm scared that all of the extra "attention" is stressing him out and going to make the pancreatitis worse.

When my cat, Phoenix, had pancreatititis, they switched him to tramadol. Taz will stay stressed out from the feeding, pricking and pilling until he starts to feel better. It is necessary to do this, though. He will get through this. My cat only had the one attack. Cerenia and a small dose of prednisone can help a lot with inflammation and get Taz eating again. I would definitely ask your vet about this.

He's going back to the vet today, so I'll discuss medications with him. Trying to remember everything when you're exhausted, is tough.

Please try and remember the Cerenia and the prednisone. A lot of vets will tell you that the prednisone will make his blood glucose go up. It will, but the prednisone will make Taz feel better and make him eat. It makes you very hungry. He would only need to stay on the prednisone for a week or two. The benefits of the prednisone outweigh the negative. I know Taz will start to feel better soon so hang in there.

Today Taz went back to the vet for his 1 week check up. The vet said there were some high numbers he wasn't happy with, and some low numbers he wasn't happy with, but overall he was pleased with Taz's numbers. He said that Taz seems to be doing really well his first week for a cat that is dealing with pancreatitis, along with new insulin. He said that he wants to drop the dosage to 1 unit, twice a day, and see how Taz does with it now that hopefully the pancreatitis is healing and his pain is being managed. He could tell that Taz was scared, and Taz's BG was 282 this time. Last time he was so high that the meter couldn't read the number. Taz weighed 17.3 pounds last Friday, and today he was 17.2.

He appreciated me having a chart of Taz's readings and said we didn't need the fructosamine test because he could see exactly where he was. He also said that if we have to cut down on testing through out the day, that we could alternate days.... before insulin today, between the middle of the cycle tomorrow. We'll definately continue with at least before insulin and at +6, and fit in others when needed. Overall, he said we were doing a good job and he wants to see him back in 7-14 days to see how the new amount is working. He tries to start insulin at the lowest dose and adjust from there. He didn't like jumping right to 2 units, but he didn't want to change what the ER vet said either, until he could get a better picture.
