Hi everyone

Great news!!
Tansi's bloodwork was completely normal, and there is no longer any abdominal effusion. We are beyond thankful.
Here is a wierd thing though
He has tapeworms!
I am entirely surprised becausevhe never goes outside and fleas (tapeworms appear when kitty injests a flea egg) are practically unheard of in Alberta. I haven't seen one here ever and that's 28 years.
I'm a little skeptical yet there it was, she showed me the white thing near his bumhole.
It's an easy fix I know, but I think I will get a second opinion before filling him up with flea treatment and dewormer. And the other two cats as well.
Wouldn't it be funny if it was just a grain of rice!

In Calgary we are being pounded with snow and with windchill it is minus 32.
 
Dewormer would be necessary if he has tapeworms but not flea medication. A few months after I rescued Tiffany I actually saw a worm. There were no sign of fleas. So she did need two dewormer pills but no flea medication. Max was not given any dewormer . She must have had fleas before I got her. I can’t imagine where Tansi could have gotten fleas except at the vet.:rolleyes:

Did the white thing actually move? I’m skeptical as well.

There are multiple species of tapeworms. The one most commonly found in cats—and the one we most often think of when we see a tapeworm segment on the bum—has a flea as the intermediate host (so the cat gets the tapeworm by ingesting a flea). However, other species of tapeworm have different intermediate hosts, including rodents, rabbits, even sheep, so it’s maybe possible that the tapeworm it one of those other species and that it came from something other than a flea. I was just talking to my vet about this recently. You might want to make sure whatever dewormer your use works for multiple species of tapeworm (and yes you’ll want to use a dewormer)…
 
Ugh, on the tapeworms. You will want to deworm on all the animals. Not so fond memories of working at the shelter and giving a bum bath to a cat and finding little wriggly white things. :arghh: All the cats at the shelter had to be dewormed. All took the meds in a pill pocket, except one I eventually adopted.

I truly can't figure it out. The only thing I can picture happening is that he picked it up 4 weeks ago from the hospital. Maybe there was an outdoor animal in his kennel with fleas and one or two escaped the disinfecting agent?
I have to do more research before I load up all three of my cats with dewormer and flea killer.
I have the lighted magnifying glass for microdosing and I am using it for intense investigations !!!
 
So happy about the blood work and no more effusion! We had fleas here in my house :arghh::mad::arghh::mad: for weeks and I never figured out how they got in our house since our cats only go out for vet visits. We did have an occasional visit from a dog but supposedly he didn't have fleas. The treatment for it was easy (Advantage II) and it worked well on the cats but it took a lot longer to get the fleas out of our stuff (we eventually moved out of that house, so problem solved there). I still have the scars from the bites. They probably bothered me more than they bothered the cats!
 
My cats have always been indoors. They get flea spot treatment year round. There are different kinds of fleas. You can bring them into the house in your clothes, shoes from walking through the grass. So many years ago, I bought them home to my apartment from my mother's garage where cut grass got carried in on shoes, there are sand fleas. Also had a cat who got worms from where I don't know. She just got out of litter box and they were wiggling in her deposit. Treated all 4 cats at same time. I don't know about anyone else but you can't keep all bugs from getting in your house. Every October we have asian beetle invasion. They swarm the house and some do get in. Spiders, flies, ants get in. We have deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, foxes, barn cats all go through our yard. So my guys are protected year round now.

It's so gross to think about! I might be in denial ?

Yikes. I guess it's easier than I thought to bring them in. I am gonna have dreams about creepy crawlies for months now, haha

It is. Once when visiting mother in law, fleas were all over the place, some were on grand kids face. I told husband we are going home. Made him strip in the garage, was he pissed. Threw our clothes in plastic bag and put in outside trash. They still got in our house. I fogged the house, again hubby was pissed. Any time he went to his mothers, I left clothes for him outside the door to change before coming in the house. I fogged every 6 months. In our current house, I now fog once a year. October or November when our Asian beetle invasion is over and weather is decent to sit with cats on our deck for a couple of hours.
