Our tomcat is 14 years old.
In 2016 he suddenly became diabetic. After almost 6 months of insulin, special vet food... he miraculously got better after only a few days on raw farm chicken.
For over 5 years his glucose levels were fine, whether he ate raw or cooked (her prefers the latter). We noticed that when he eats raw chicken he gets a bit itchy.
I noticed a few weeks ago that he was more agitated when the breakfast/dinner time comes. He would sometimes "complain" after eating or eat smaller portions, make a pause, then come back to finish his meal. He would sometimes meow in the middle of the night. I checked his glucose levels and everything was fine. Until a week ago.
His glucose levels were between 291-341 for a few days. At the vet's last week, they did the blood fructosamine test and it was fine. Their test also showed glucose levels above 300 but all the other parameters were fine (kidneys, liver...). I'm seeing them again in 5 days, when they will redo the test and I'll ask them to check our cat's thyroid. He's otherwise in great health, the vet said.
Needles to say I have no idea where this came from!
He's been acting as usual. Even the above mentioned occasional "complaining" has lessened. There was no specific stress that he went through. He had no injuries, he eats and goes to the toilet normally. We go to the countryside twice a month, and he loves it there. He's active.
I would be very grateful if you could tell me what other tests we should do or if there's anything we should be looking for.
I have a feeling that maybe we still have a chance to turn this thing around.
Thank you!!!!
p.s. I don't know if cats can absorb the negative energy if humans around them are stressed... We had a rough couple of weeks. A dear friend of ours passed away after a few weeks in hospice. We spent a lot of time with him and needles to say are devastated.
